Marcin* F OR some time now the phenomenon known as psychological typing has been finding its way into the study and even the practice of law. The phenomenon has its origin in the notion that people are different in ways that are meamngfully categonzable and classifiable, i.e., that there are genuine, empirically verifiable psychological "types" among people, with the members of each type possessing similar psychological characteristics to some significant extent. The phenomenon is based in Jungian psychology, but its influence has extended well beyond that discipline and into others, including the law and lawyering. More than two decades ago, in an article published in the Journal of Legal Education, a program director for the Educational Testing Service suggested that a positive correlation existed between personality type and law school survival and attrition.' The article is still influential today 2 College pre-law advisors have taken to using psychological typing indicators as aids in career counseling. In other contexts, family law practitioners, following the lead of many marriage counselors, now use psychological typing indicators as conciliation tools, and law firms, following the lead of corporate management in general, are beginning to use them in personnel development programs. What is psychological typing? What are psychological typing indicators?Is the theory behind them sound? Are they useful, or dangerous, or perhaps both? These are the questions that will be addressed in this article. Psychological typing is based on a theory developed by analytical psychologist Carl Jung. 3 Based on the psychological "attitudes" and "functions" that he observed not only in his patients and in himself but also in his prolific studies of history, biography, philosophy and the humanities in general, Jung concluded that human beings can be grouped * Professor of Law, The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law. '4 Jung's account of psychological attitudes has already found its way into our everyday speech. We often speak of people as being extraverts or introverts (and it was Jung who coined the terms). With respect to the psychological functions,5 Jung identified four-thinking, feeling (or valuing), sensing and intuiting-and he posited that each human being, while possessing all four, has a marked preference for one or another in much the same way as a person has a marked preference for the use of one hand or the other. Psychological typing indicatorsare devices, usually appearing in question- and-answer format, designed to help people identify and learn about their particular personality typology Psychological typing indicators both predate and postdate the work of Jung, and Jung himself was not deeply involved in the efforts to develop workable type indicators. They are, however, widely used today, both on an individual counseling and on a general research basis. To say that psychological typing has been finding its way into legal education and into the practice of law is not to say that it has received a cordial welcome in either arena. It has met with some resistance and has struggled with what is commonly referred to as "bad press." The very term "psychological typing" suggests "stereotyping," and stereotyping is something that we have come to recognize as a fault or a flaw in social thinking. Even its advocates would likely concede that psychological typing, superficially understood and ineptly applied, is a form of stereotyping-one that can cause and exacerbate social and individual wounds. 6 However, its proponents claim that, correctly understood and responsibly applied, psychological typing has great potential for healing and for bringing people together and has a positive role to play in creating a world in which human differences constructively complement one another.7 The curious thing about psychological type theory is that it is viewed as either heresy or salvation. Fall 19921 PSYCHOLOGICAL TYPE THEORY THE ANcIENT HISTORY OF TYPE THEORY Personality typology has a long and somewhat checkered history Perhaps the oldest attempts at typology are those that developed within one of humankind's oldest and most controversial speculative pursuits-astrology In oriental astrology, the twelve signs of the zodiac were divided into four groupings: earth signs, air signs, fire signs and water signs. Anyone born under one or another of the groupings was believed to have personality characteristics peculiar to that grouping.8 During the 5th century, B.C., Hippocrates introduced a personality typology keyed to one's supposed physiological condition. The typology was also endorsed by Claudius Galen in the 2nd century, A.D. According to Hippocrates and Galen, differences in personality among human beings were deemed to be caused by bodily "humors," imbalances in the major bodily fluids. For example, liver bile was associated with the "choleric" personality, blood with the "sanguine" personality, kidney bile with the "melancholic" personality and phlegm with the "phlegmatic" personality 9 Both systems, i.e., the astrological groupings and the four temperaments system of Hippocrates, proved unusually persistent over the centuries. Jung himself remarked, speaking first of the four temperaments system: "As is well known, this typology lasted at least seventeen hundred years. As for the astrological type theory, to the astonishment of the enlightened it still remains intact today, and is even enjoying a new vogue."' 0 This ancient history of type theory understandably seems to be something of an embarrassment to the contemporary type theorists. Isabel Briggs Myers ignores it in her major work." David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates mention the four temperaments theory briefly, but not the astrological groupings system. 2 In truth, to most contemporary minds, the etiologies in ancient type theory are an embarrassment, but as Jung correctly understood, their very endurance alone over the centuries says something. It tells us that there has long been a ready disposition to accept the proposition that psychological types do exist and seem to have existed for all of remembered time. Types may not be explainable in terms of birth dates or of phlegm, blood and bile, but if they exist as a psychological phenomenon, they 8. Applications include network protocols, business processes and operating system services. In this paper we define a multithreaded functional language with session types, which unifies, simplifies and extends previous work. There are four main contributions. First is an operational semantics with buffered channels, instead of the synchronous communication of previous work. Second, we prove that the session type of a channel gives an upper bound on the necessary size of the buffer. Third, session types are manipulated by means of the standard structures of a linear type theory, rather than by means of new forms of typing judgement. Fourth, a notion of subtyping, including the standard subtyping relation for session types (imported into the functional setting), and a novel form of subtyping between standard and linear function types, which allows the typechecker to handle linear types conveniently. Our new approach significantly simplifies session types in the functional setting, clarifies their essential features and provides a secure foundation for language developments such as polymorphism and object-orientation.

So he set about developing a fundamental and universal way to package the information into practical guidelines that could be understood and easily applied by both children and adults alike.

Celebrations, Inc. had failed to meet several of its financial targets. The CEO decided that the company needed a new management team and brought in the Management Succession team of the Human Resource Division (HR) to facilitate the selection. This team believed that senior management had chosen the current management team based solely on performance and likeability and that a preponderance of the same personality temperament had contributed to groupthink, one-dimensional decision-making, and an unbalanced organizational leadership culture. Research indicated that high performing organizations had cultures that included all four temperaments (Demarest, 1995) and as many different personality types as possible.

    A General Framework for the Semantics of Type Theory Taichi Uemura November 14, 2019 Abstract We propose an abstract notion of a type theory to unify the semantics of various type theories including Martin-L¨oftype theory, two-level type theory and cubical type theory. We establish basic results in the semantics of type theory: every type theory has a bi-initial model; every model of a type theory has its internal language; the category of theories over a type theory is bi-equivalent to a full sub-2-category of the 2-category of models of the type theory. 1 Introduction One of the key steps in the semantics of type theory and logic is to estab- lish a correspondence between theories and models. Every theory generates a model called its syntactic model, and every model has a theory called its internal language. Classical examples are: simply typed λ-calculi and cartesian closed categories (Lambek and Scott 1986); extensional Martin-L¨oftheories and locally cartesian closed categories (Seely 1984); first-order theories and hyperdoctrines (Seely 1983); higher-order theories and elementary toposes (Lambek and Scott 1986). Recently, homotopy type theory (The Univalent Foundations Program 2013) is expected to provide an internal language for what should be called \el- ementary (1; 1)-toposes". As a first step, Kapulkin and Szumio (2019) showed that there is an equivalence between dependent type theories with intensional identity types and finitely complete (1; 1)-categories. Shelton ABSTRACT Personality tests have long been utilized to assist in the assessment of individuals. This study analyzes David Keirsey’s temperament types and college students intending to major in accounting. The recruiting and retaining of students with qualities and characteristics desired by the accounting profession has historically presented a challenge for accounting departments in higher education (Corkren, Parks, & Morgan, 2013). Relationships were used to determine similarities between various traits of the respondents. Gender, having taken an accounting- related high school course, accounting-related work experience and level of college education were all compared with the expectations of Keirsey’s temperament types. Students attending a small liberal arts teaching university (Concord University in Athens, West Virginia) and students attending a large research institution (Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia) were used for the study. A quantitative research design was used to conduct this study. Descriptive statistics were utilized to determine frequencies, averages and variability. Chi-square (χ²) analyzed the number of responses in different temperament categories to determine if actual results were significantly different in determining accounting as a major field of study.

Empathy is especially important to cultivate for counselors, as research indicates that empathy is an essential ingredient for developing successful counseling relationships, leading to positive change for clients. The purpose of the present study is to examine the relationship between personality and empathy in a sample of counseling students using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® as the personality measure and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index as the empathy measure. A series of MANOVAs were conducted with results reporting significant differences in empathy based on personality type. Specifically, the type preferences of Extraversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving had significantly higher empathy scores than their opposite preferences of Introversion, Sensing, Thinking and Judging, respectively. These findings provide a starting point for future investigations in the areas of personality and empathy in counselor education and supervision programs.

    43 CHAPTER 2 PERSONALITY PREFERENCES Emotional competence is the research domain on which this research is based. This chapter focuses on the discussion of personality preferences as a variable that influences the emotional competence of individuals. Personality preferences are discussed from the paradigmatic perspective of the Analytical Psychology of Carl Jung. By discussing the personality theory (more specifically, the Psychological Type theory) of Carl Jung (1921, 1959, 1971, 1990) and the MBTI Personality Type theory of Myers and Briggs (Myers, 1987), the researcher attempts to organise observations of people by providing some kind of underlying framework for classifying and describing individual behaviour. The aim is to determine what aspects of personality enable certain individuals to be more emotionally competent than others. This is in line with step 1 of phase one of the research method as described in chapter 1 (refer to point 1.8). This chapter also aims to address the first research question stated in chapter 1 which relates to the theoretical conceptualisation of the construct personality preferences. In this chapter then, the construct personality preferences will be explored by examining the basic literature and research on personality and personality preferences. An integrated model of personality preferences from the perspective of Analytical Psychology will be proposed to enable the researcher to explain the theoretical relationship between the variables personality preferences, self-esteem, and emotional competence. Finally, the theoretical research implications for leader development and the field of Industrial and Organisational Psychology will be discussed. 2.1 PARADIGMATIC AND CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS The discussion of the paradigmatic and conceptual foundations that follows, aims at a broader understanding of the constructs personality and personality preferences from the paradigmatic perspective of Analytical Psychology.

They have been applied to parametricity (which is about preservation of relations) [AGJ14], univalent type theory (which is about preservation of equiv- alences) [BCH14, Hub15], directed type theory (which is about preservation of morphisms) and even combinations thereof [RS17, CH19]. Of course, after going through the endeavour of con- structing a presheaf model of type theory, we want type-theoretic profit, i.e. we want internal operations that allow us to write cheap proofs of the `free' theorems [Wad89] that follow from the preservation property concerned. While the models for univalence, parametricity and directed type theory are all just cases of presheaf categories, approaches to internalize their results do not have an obvious common ances- tor (neither historically nor mathematically). Cohen et al. [CCHM16] have used the final type extension operator Glue to prove univalence. In previous work with Vezzosi [NVD17], we used Glue and its dual, the initial type extension operator Weld, to internalize parametricity to some extent. Before, Bernardy, Coquand and Moulin [BCM15, Mou16] have internalized parametricity using completely different `boundary filling’ operators Ψ (for extending types) and Φ (for extending func- tions). Unfortunately, Ψ and Φ have so far only been proven sound with respect to substructural (affine-like) variables of representable types (such as the relational or homotopy interval I). More 1 recently, Licata et al. [LOPS18] have exploited the fact that the homotopyp interval I is atomic | meaning that the exponential functor (I ! xy) has a right adjoint | in order to construct a universe of Kan-fibrant types from a vanilla Hofmann-Streicher universe [HS97] internally.

While website design effects on trust and e-commerce have been studied, these are usually coarse grained models. A more individualized approach to utilization of online credit card payment services is examined that utilizes personality as measured by the Myers-Briggs personality type assessment to determine variances in perception of online payment service features. The results indicate that certain overriding principles appear to be largely universal, namely security and efficiency (or timeliness) of the payment system. However there are differences in the perceived benefit of these features and other features between personality types, which may be capitalized upon by payment service providers to attract a broader base of consumers and maintain continuance of existing users.
