In this new book he takes this one step further. Pointing at the Moon is a collection of fascinating, sometimes moving stories—some autobiographical—that demonstrate how a regular person can kindle and develop spirituality in him- or herself. Geurtz shows that through love and suffering we can more consciously work towards the ultimate grasp of reality. More than 100,000 copies of Addicted to Love sold. ‘An authentic narrative of spiritual growth through suffering.’ – Trouw MIRANDE PHERNAMBUCQ MIRANDE JAN GEURTZ studied orthopedagogy, didactics and philosophy of science. The Netherlands was awaiting Liberation at the beginning of September 1944: the Allied forces had reached the border and the German army appeared to have collapsed. By now, more than 100,000 Jewish compatriots have been deported, hundreds of civilians killed by ‘friendly fire’ during Allied bombings, and thousands of resistance fighters arrested, many of them executed. Is the terror finally coming to an end? No. The Netherlands must endure another eight long, fearful months of hunger, struggle and hardship. A secret agent imprisoned in Camp Vught is sent off to a German concentration camp; a teenager witnesses the bloody Battle of Arnhem; a boy escapes three bombardments by the skin of his teeth during the Battle of the Schelde; and a girl from Texel sees her island transformed into a battlefield—with the end of the war in sight. This is good news. But there’s a downside. With such an uncertain future, how do you pick up where you left off? What about your mental state? Has your self-image changed? Have you changed? Does your employer still appreciate you? How do you explain the situation to your children? Does your partner still understand you? And what about your friends? In Living in Limbo, a wide range of people – young and old, male and female, with and without children – share their experience in dealing with their “new” life. ‘Breakthroughs in the field of cancer treatment mean that more and more people live longer with cancer. This raises psychological issues and demands a great deal of resilience within this group, who live in a constant state of uncertainty. We recognize an urgent need to share these experiences. This book can help lots of people, including professionals.’ – Marije van der Lee, Head of Scientific Research at the MIRANDE PHERNAMBUCQ MIRANDE Helen Dowling Institure and health care psychologist In addition to thrillers and a novel, DANIËLLE HERMANS has written two non-fiction books. In 2014 she was diagnosed with cancer, which returned twice following opera- tions and chemotherapy, but is now in remission. Neither she nor her oncologist has any idea if it will stay that way. We’ve never exercised as much as we do today and we watch what we eat closely. And yet at the same time, our bodies are less and less useful: robotization and artificial intelligence are making us redundant in the workplace. In We Are Our Bodies philosopher Aldo Houterman places the significance of our body in the current age. He counters the thesis of neurobiologist Dick Swaab (author of We Are Our Brains) that human beings are no more than their brain. Houterman demonstrates that the relationship between us humans and the world around us does not consist of our thoughts, but of our movements and corporality. It is the body that forms the basis of intelligent human behaviour. Using well-known examples from sports, as well as psychology, philosophy, literature and art, Houterman shows that the body is capable of reacting to a situation without the involvement of conscious thought. We Are Our Bodies helps us to become aware of the capabili- ties of our bodies, and to understand and use them better. From We Are Our Bodies: ‘Running, cycling, rowing and playing football confronts people with their body, their desires and their ambitions. Sport gives one a special kind of self-awareness. Where those thoughts come from, you don’t know, but they’re relentless. Rest assured, you’re not alone: we have been worrying our way through life since the origin of our species. In The Happy Worrier, as entertaining as it is intelligent, researcher and psychologist Bart Verkuil explains worry’s origins, its evolutionary benefits and how we twentieth-century beings can use it to our advantage. Because no matter what a trial a sleepless night can be, the occasional bout of worry appears to be rather useful for a person. Worry shows where your priorities lie and what aspects of life you value the most. The Happy Worrier is both a fascinating biography of the worrier and a practical guidebook all in one. After reading this book, your next sleepless night will be a lot less worrisome. Worrying isn’t a problem, it’s a strength! From The Happy Worrier: ‘The brain can be regarded as a prediction machine, constantly estimating the risks of our complex everyday life.

CONTINENTAL THOUGHT & THEORY: A JOURNAL OF INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM (What does it mean to) Think the Novel? Volume 2 | Issue 3: The Novel 70-90 | ISSN: 2463-333X A World without the Novel Roland Végső The primary objective of the essay is to draw the consequences of a truly consistent deployment of the utopian desire that animates Georg Lukács’s The Theory of the Novel. On the one hand, it is quite evident that for Lukács the theory of the novel is a utopian means of the destruction of the novel form itself. On the other hand, however, I argue that Lukács also shows that this utopian desire for the destruction of the novel form is in reality an essential component of the novel form itself. As a result, the novel form is by definition an attempt to imagine what from the perspective of this form remains unimaginable: a world without the novel. The contemporary relevance of this argument, however, remains obscured until we free it from one of Lukács’s basic metaphysical limitations: we must question the central status of the category of the “world” for the theory of the novel. The idea of the “novel” and the idea of the “world” seem to attract each other with an unusually strong force.1 Regardless of whether we conceive of this relation as a natural consequence of our metaphysical realities or a never quite accomplished historical destiny, the two concepts seem to mirror each other in infinitely complex ways. In fact, 70 CONTINENTAL THOUGHT & THEORY: A JOURNAL OF INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM (What does it mean to) Think the Novel? the two categories have been orbiting each other for so long now that today we find it hard to fully tell them apart.

  • The Role of Adaptive Plasticity in a Major Evolutionary Transition
Functional Blackwell Publishing Ltd Ecology 2007 The role of adaptive plasticity in a major evolutionary 21, 1154–1161 transition: early aquatic experience affects locomotor performance of terrestrial snakes F. AUBRET,*† X. BONNET‡ and R. SHINE* *University of Sydney, Biological Sciences A08, 2006 New South Wales, Australia, ‡Centre d’Etudes Biologiques de Chizé, CNRS, 79360 Villiers en Bois, France Summary 1. Many phylogenetic lineages of animals have undergone major habitat transitions, stimulating dramatic phenotypic changes as adaptations to the novel environment. Although most such traits clearly reflect genetic modification, phenotypic plasticity may have been significant in the initial transition between habitat types. 2. Elapid snakes show multiple phylogenetic shifts from terrestrial to aquatic life. We raised young tigersnakes (a terrestrial taxon closely related to sea-snakes) in either a terrestrial or aquatic environment for a 5-month period. 3. The snakes raised in water were able to swim 26% faster, but crawled 36% more slowly, than did their terrestrially-raised siblings. A full stomach impaired locomotor performance, but snakes were less impaired when tested in the environment in which they had been raised. 4. Thus, adaptively plastic responses to local environments may have facilitated aquatic performance (and impaired terrestrial performance) in ancestral snakes as they shifted from terrestrial to aquatic existence. 5. Such plasticity may have influenced the rate or route of this evolutionary transition between habitats, and should be considered when comparing habitat-specific locomotor abilities of present-day aquatic and terrestrial species. key-words: development, elapid, locomotion, phenotype Functional Ecology (2007) 21, 1154–1161 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2435.2007.01310.x that vary over small spatial and temporal scales.

Communicating Europe Manual: The Netherlands Information and contacts on the Dutch debate on the EU and enlargement to the Western Balkans Supported by the Strategic Programme Fund of the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office 23 November 2009 www.esiweb.org 2 Communicating Europe: The Netherlands Manual ABOUT THIS MANUAL Who shapes the debate on the future of EU enlargement in The Netherlands today? This manual aims to provide an overview by introducing the key people and key institutions. It starts with a summary of core facts about the Netherlands. It also offers an overview of the policy debates in The Netherlands on the EU, on future enlargement and the Western Balkans. Space is also given to the media landscape; TV, radio and print media and the internet-based media. Any debate in a vibrant democracy is characterised by a range of views. Nonetheless, when it comes to Dutch views on EU enlargement, the people included in this manual are certainly among the most influential. This manual draws on detailed research carried out by ESI from 2005 to 2006 on enlargement fatigue in the Netherlands and on the Dutch debate on Turkey. Fresh research has also been carried out in 2009 especially for the Communicating Europe workshop co-sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the European Fund for the Balkans. • CHAPTER 1 Reinventing Discovery
August 18, 2011 Time: 06:24pm chapter01.tex Copyrighted Material CHAPTER 1 Reinventing Discovery Tim Gowers is not your typical blogger. A mathematician at Cam bridge University, Gowers is a recipient of the highest honor in mathematics, the Fields Medal, often called the Nobel Prize of mathematics. His blog radiates mathematical ideas and insight. In January 2009, Gowers decided to use his blog to run a very unusual social experiment. He picked out an important and difficult unsolved mathematical problem, a problem he said he’d “love to solve.” But instead of attacking the problem on his own, or with a few close colleagues, he decided to attack the problem completely in the open, using his blog to post ideas and partial progress. What’s more, he issued an open invitation asking other people to help out. Anyone could follow along and, if they had an idea, explain it in the comments section of the blog. Gowers hoped that many minds would be more powerful than one, that they would stimulate each other with different expertise and perspectives, and collectively make easy work of his hard mathematical problem. He dubbed the experiment the Polymath Project. The Polymath Project got off to a slow start. Seven hours after Gowers opened up his blog for mathematical discussion, not a single person had commented. Then a mathematician named Jozsef Solymosi from the University of British Columbia posted a comment suggesting a variation on Gowers’s problem, a variation which was easier, but which Solymosi thought might throw light on the original problem. Fifteen minutes later, an Arizona high-school teacher named Jason Dyer chimed in with a thought of his own.
