This view is amplified in a series of empirical studies based on stories told by children between the ages of two and five, and on written and oral responses to repertory grids and open-ended questionnaires by six, nine, thirteen, and seventeen year olds and from five schools. s. Separate samples of eleven, thirteen, and sixteen year olds were drawn for a supplementary study of various spectator-role genres and media. Developmental changes center in:(1) the relationOtip between spectator-role experience and the life of the individual; (2)_ knowledge of the conventions of spectator7role discourse; and (3) the complexity of the experience (both personal and literary) over which a person has mastery. Spectator-rolediscourse emerges as a separate mode of language use at a very early age, but there is only a gradual separation of spectator-role experience from other life experiences. Not until adolescence is such discourse clearly a way to present possibilities rather than to describe reality. So auch in der vorliegenden Ausgabe: Wollte man ein Thema finden, könnte es in etwa so lauten: Wie sind wir geworden, wie wir heute sind? Gesellschaftlich? Künstlerisch? Konsumentisch? Janina Leferink geht dieser Frage für das durch die Werbung transpor- tierte weibliche Schönheitsideal in der Weimarer Republik nach, Sophie Neu untersucht die Entwicklung der Wiedergabe komplexer Bewegungs- abläufe in Comics, und Jonas Geweke analysiert die Entstehung der US- amerikanischen Konsumkultur aus den Idealen des american dream. Natürlich ist aber auch diese anwesenheitsnotiz genau wie ihre Bei- träge nicht auf DAS eine Thema zu reduzieren. Da ist immer noch die Artivism-Arbeit (Lukas Valtin), die die politische Aussagekraft von Kunstwerken infrage stellt. Und gleich noch einmal die Weimarer Repu- blik: Moritz Müller-Schwefes Beitrag untersucht das Flanieren in öffent- lichen Verkehrsmitteln in den Feuilletons Gabriele Tergits und Annett Gröschners. In der Redaktion hat sich auch wieder einiges getan: Wir begrüßen die neuen Redaktionsmitglieder Lukas Nils Regeler – der unsere letzte Aus- gabe schon als Beitragender bereichert hat und nun auf der »anderen« Seite des Schreibtisches tatkräftige Unterstützung leistet – und Larissa Hesse, die ebenfalls seit dieser Ausgabe mit Rat und Tat zur Seite steht.

The ABE-initiated coordination of services has, since September 1972, demonstrated the possibilities of service to rural disadvantaged under educated adults. The objectives designed to demonstrate such services led to: provision of bookmobile services to ABE centers, materials to ABE classes, community referral services through both agencies, student orientation to library use, mail delivery of requested materials, use of readers' profiles to determine student needs, home visits to prospective clients, and case studies of the effects of the project on the target group.

    Berlin in English-language Fiction, 1989-2009: Spatial Representation and the Dynamics of Memory Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Paul O’Hanrahan May 2014 Berlin in English-language Fiction, 1989-2009: Spatial Representation and the Dynamics of Memory Paul O’Hanrahan, University of Liverpool Abstract This thesis sets out to define the field of Berlin English-language fiction since 1989 by identifying its distinctive forms of representation of space and memory. The post-Wall Berlin thriller can be characterised as a literary category based on genre combinations and a turn to the past. Distinct spatial iconographies emerge in thrillers representing Nazi Berlin, post-war „rubble Berlin‟ and the divided Cold War period; even the twenty-first-century city is related to 1920s cabarets. Applying Huyssen‟s observations on Berlin as a palimpsest of dynamic relations between past and present, I show that the Berlin thriller‟s concern with memory is responsive to contemporary uncertainties in the decades following the fall of the Wall. I proceed to compare British perspectives on divided Berlin in novels with thriller associations by Ian McEwan, John le Carré and James Lasdun. I posit that British involvement in the shared governance of divided Berlin during the Cold War era has fostered a special nostalgia for the city which has influenced the intimacy with which these authors represent the city. Through analysis of spatial relations with both parts of the divided city, I reveal unexpected British affinities with East Berlin, ambivalent memories of the Wall and regret at its fall.

That GI wasn't even born when we first sat here waiting for the dogs to bark.' The dogs sensed any unusual happenings long before the handlers came to get them. That's why we kept the windows open; that's why we were frozen nearly to death. Success there led to work in the much more prestigious German theatrical community in Munich and Berlin. His first films were Die Abenteuer eines Zehnmarkscheins (The Adventures of a Ten Mark Note, 1926), Hokuspokus (Hocuspocus, 1930), and Dreyfus (The Dreyfus Case, 1930).
