Cambridgshire Memories of the Cold War Era
Cambridgshire Memories of the Cold War era Our mission: to research, record and archive the local history of the Cold War era working with Cambridgeshire residents to tell our stories and commemorate 30 years since the Fall of The Berlin Wall. SpyNet is a National Heritage Lottery Funded project, led by New International Theatre Company. Thanks to partners The Norris Museum, Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust, Ramsey Youth Club (Crunch) and The Library Presents. Introduction The following texts are transcriptions of interviews from people who give a variety of personal perspectives on the Cold War. These are mainly from those serving professionally with RAF, USAFE, Civil Defence or the Intelligence services; but also included are the insights of a teenager growing up on a base, an artist who lived on the Soviet side of the Iron Curtain and the memories of people who protested at Molesworth. The memories begin in the '60s and cover the height of the Cold War in the '80s. The contributors all have a connection to Cambridgeshire, highlighting the importance of this period of history for the region. Today the activities have changed, USAFE U2 spy planes no longer fly from Alconbury and the RAF Nimrods no longer fly from Wyton, however cyber-espionage continues apace at undisclosed locations. The physical landscape is changing too with RAF Molesworth, Alconbury and Upwood all facing closure and re-purposing to housing development, but the memories stay with those who lived through a unique historical era. 1 2 contents 1. Edition 2.0 “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” Air Commodore-in-Chief Royal Air Force Regiment Her Majesty The Queen unveiled this portrait of herself, which now dominates the entrance hall, in 1967. The portrait depicts the Queen as Sovereign of the Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s premier Order of Chivalry. The portrait was commissioned by the Officers of the RAF Regiment to commemorate the Regiment’s 25th Anniversary and was executed by Huseph Riddle. Both at the unveiling and subsequently at the Royal Review of the RAF Regiment to commemorate the 40th Anniversary in 1982, The Queen expressed her particular satisfaction with the portrait. Gunner 2007 Although the significance of a 65th anniversary in military terms is not great, it was recognized in 2006 that the Corps should recognize yet another milestone in its short history in some way and the idea of a new and significant piece of silverware was developed. -

As media has lost its reliability all over the world, the fans of theatre have preferred watching more political plays than TV bulletins today. As one of the leading voices of the political theatre of the world, David Hare knows what expectations the audience has and what responsibilities political drama has. He handles the results of a lot of national and international political decisions over societies and individuals in his plays. In Berlin/ Wall, which are two separate monologue readings, the British playwright portrays new life conditions of ordinary people of different communities via his own empirical observations and interviews after the two walls which were erected by world politics. This work primarily examines the sociological views and political narratives of David Hare about the present and future of Germany, Israel and Palestine among the traces of two walls. ABJECTION IN LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY BRITISH LITERATURE By Robin Imholte A Project Presented to The Faculty of Humboldt State University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in English: Literary and Cultural Studies Committee Membership Dr. Mary Ann Creadon, Committee Chair Dr. Michael Eldridge, Second Reader Dr. Janet Winston, Graduate Coordinator July 2017 ABSTRACT ABJECTION IN LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY BRITISH LITERATURE Robin Imholte In this project, I examine three major British works of literature produced in the last two decades of the nineteenth century: Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure. I show that these works reflect popular trends and fears that arose during this time, including notions of decadence and fears of degeneration. Using Julia Kristeva’s conception of abjection, as described in her work Powers of Horror, I argue that developments throughout the Victorian era: namely the advent of the theory of evolution, the rise and expansion of large-scale industrialization, and the moral and economic benefits and ramifications of global colonization, ultimately led to social and individual insecurities that reverberated throughout popular literature of the time. I conclude that these cultural attitudes and insecurities can be seen reflected in works of literature and in their depiction of characters and behaviors whose self-abjection are a reflection of a society with an unstable self-image. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS By its very nature, a journey through graduate school is not supposed to be easy. -

The Cultures of the Suburbs International Research network 2014 Conference: Imagining the Suburbs 19th-21 June 2014 University of Exeter Spies in the Suburbs Bringing the Cold War to the suburbs: Re-locating the post-war conflict in Le Carre and Deighton Janice Morphet Visiting Professor, Bartlett School of Planning, University College London [email protected] The development and recognition of the Cold War as a major shift in world conflict from ‘over there’ where battle was conducted in uniforms by the armed services to one that was to be fought on the new home front through spies was a significant plot component in the first novels of both John Le Carre, ‘Call for the Dead’ (1961) (later filmed as The Deadly Affair) and Len Deighton’s ‘The Ipcress File’ (1962). In both novels, the sleepy suburban milieu becomes the centre of Cold War espionage discovered and resolved by two iconic outsider characters, George Smiley and Harry Palmer, introduced in these works. Smiley and Palmer were seemingly dissimilar in almost every way including their age, class and war records. However these characters were united in their metropolitan provenance and experience and there has been little consideration of them in relation to each other and in their role together in re-situating the potential threats of the post-war period into a UK domestic setting from mainland Europe. An examination of the fiction of Deighton and Le Carre suggests a different world where the locus of external danger was in the suburban midst of Surrey or Wood Green. This paper will argue that these novels formed an essential role in reawakening the Home Front and alerting people to the removal of the safety and security once promised by the suburbs.
