    The Cultures of the Suburbs International Research network 2014 Conference: Imagining the Suburbs 19th-21 June 2014 University of Exeter Spies in the Suburbs Bringing the Cold War to the suburbs: Re-locating the post-war conflict in Le Carre and Deighton Janice Morphet Visiting Professor, Bartlett School of Planning, University College London [email protected] The development and recognition of the Cold War as a major shift in world conflict from ‘over there’ where battle was conducted in uniforms by the armed services to one that was to be fought on the new home front through spies was a significant plot component in the first novels of both John Le Carre, ‘Call for the Dead’ (1961) (later filmed as The Deadly Affair) and Len Deighton’s ‘The Ipcress File’ (1962). In both novels, the sleepy suburban milieu becomes the centre of Cold War espionage discovered and resolved by two iconic outsider characters, George Smiley and Harry Palmer, introduced in these works. Smiley and Palmer were seemingly dissimilar in almost every way including their age, class and war records. However these characters were united in their metropolitan provenance and experience and there has been little consideration of them in relation to each other and in their role together in re-situating the potential threats of the post-war period into a UK domestic setting from mainland Europe. An examination of the fiction of Deighton and Le Carre suggests a different world where the locus of external danger was in the suburban midst of Surrey or Wood Green. This paper will argue that these novels formed an essential role in reawakening the Home Front and alerting people to the removal of the safety and security once promised by the suburbs.

She has been quite busy, allowing a KGB asset, Major Erich Stinnes, to "defect," actually tossing a spanner into the works of London Central by casting doubt on one of the MI6 department heads. A leaod from Stinnes leads to the arrest of a West German civil servant and his handler. It is certainly not in the same class as Le Carre. London match , G. I was downright worried.

    Sunday 29 August 2010 TRIBUTE Ray Hawkey, graphic designer, 1930-2010 Len Deighton recalls a friend and colleague who led a modern revolution in publishing graphic design Ray Hawkey was a quiet, impeccable dressed, soft-spoken genius. He changed very little from the time I met him in the 1950s until he died last week. He had a loving wife and long-lasting stable marriage and had lived in the same carefully chosen Notting Hill apartment for many decades. Ray grew up in Cornwall, near the sea, and despite the respect and admiration he earned in London’s luxurious world of press and advertising, he thought of himself as a country boy. “You are big-city material,” Ray would tell me when our opinions differed, as they often did. His apartment depicted this other life. Beautifully framed photographs, paintings and embroidery portrayed the tall ships of times long ago. A polished brass ship’s compass, a lovely figurehead and a ship bent into a green glass bottle provided a background to superb items of furniture. It was a great privilege to be Ray’s friend. His support when I struggled to earn a living as an illustrator was unfaltering. When he spotted the stained and scribbled recipes I used in my kitchen, he tided them up, advised me about the graphics and took them to the Observer – they became “cookstrips”: a recipe a week for many years. When, with apologies and hesitation, I showed him my first attempt to write a novel [The Ipcress File], he grabbed it and took it to the Daily Express.

María Magdalena García Lorenzo Facultad de Filología UNED Convocatoria Febrero, Curso 2020 - 2021 Abstract In spite of being a literary genre that has its basis on questioning the consequences of modifying the outcome of a given historical event — an activity that has traditionally been performed since antiquity —, alternate history was not properly defined as such until the mid-1990s, having finally achieved a mainstream status as of the second decade of the 21st century thanks to the popularization of various television adaptations that have alternate history narratives as their source. These novels and their adaptations make display of an ability to portray the way in which the historical events they alter are shaped within the human mind as well as how they are perceived in collective memory. Consequently, the purpose behind this master’s dissertation is to analyse the aforementioned ability in two alternate history novels that have received their own television adaptation in recent years, namely Philip K.     Berlin in English-language Fiction, 1989-2009: Spatial Representation and the Dynamics of Memory Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Paul O’Hanrahan May 2014 Berlin in English-language Fiction, 1989-2009: Spatial Representation and the Dynamics of Memory Paul O’Hanrahan, University of Liverpool Abstract This thesis sets out to define the field of Berlin English-language fiction since 1989 by identifying its distinctive forms of representation of space and memory. The post-Wall Berlin thriller can be characterised as a literary category based on genre combinations and a turn to the past. Distinct spatial iconographies emerge in thrillers representing Nazi Berlin, post-war „rubble Berlin‟ and the divided Cold War period; even the twenty-first-century city is related to 1920s cabarets. Applying Huyssen‟s observations on Berlin as a palimpsest of dynamic relations between past and present, I show that the Berlin thriller‟s concern with memory is responsive to contemporary uncertainties in the decades following the fall of the Wall. I proceed to compare British perspectives on divided Berlin in novels with thriller associations by Ian McEwan, John le Carré and James Lasdun. I posit that British involvement in the shared governance of divided Berlin during the Cold War era has fostered a special nostalgia for the city which has influenced the intimacy with which these authors represent the city. Through analysis of spatial relations with both parts of the divided city, I reveal unexpected British affinities with East Berlin, ambivalent memories of the Wall and regret at its fall.

This book is a good place to start learning. This is a book about tanks. It is a text that, from several view-points, examines the rise of the tank in modern warfare whilst also profiling Heinz Guderian, the pioneer of the armoured division and for my money the greatest commander of World War II. In addition, it also sees author Len Deighton chart the rise of the politician that gave Guderian the means to transform his vision into a reality: the infamous Adolf Hitler. So, to the nuts and bolts no pun intended (well, ok, it was really). Made up 6 main sections, spread over roughly 300 pages, and supported by 20 maps and many other illustrations, Blitzkrieg offers a selection of first-hand accounts describing the pivotal moments in the rise of the Third Reich and of its armed forces. It is an old text (originally coming to print in 1979), but this is not bad thing because it means that many of the leading characters of the Nazi establishment were still alive and in a position to offer comment. Not least among these is General W. K. Nehring, a man who served with many of the generals of the war (being Guderian’s Chief of Staff), and who wrote the foreword to this volume.
