“Learn to sail” training on Okauchee is entering its 50th year! During that time, hundreds of students have learned to sail – and race. All classes are taught by experienced sailors. Instructors are US Sailing certified. Classes are held at the Okauchee Lake Sailing School facility on Breezy Point Road. The OLSS owns 11 for students & two power boats for on water coaching.

Apprentice Camp for 7 – 12 year olds $300

Session 1 M-Th 11:00 – 3:00 June 20 - 23 Session 2 M-Th 11:00 – 3:00 July 11 - 14 Lessons taught by two adult middle-school teachers. Optimist sailboats are supplied. Students need to know how to swim but need have little or no sailing experience. Class limited to 8 students .

Sailing/Racing Optimist lessons for 7 – 12 year olds $250

Lessons run from early June to late August. See schedule on OLSS website. Lessons taught by experienced college age sailors. Students need to have sailing experience, but not necessarily racing experience. Students will sail in conditions. Coaches will teach fundamentals as well as racing strategies. Coaches will attend regattas with sailors if more than a few attend. Students may use their own Optimists, or rent an OLSS boat for $100.

Intro to High School 420 Team Sailing 11-17 year olds $250

Saturdays 1:00 – 4:00 April 30, May 7,14, and 21 Lessons taught by experienced college age sailors. 420’s are supplied. Students need to know how to swim, but need have no sailing experience. Students will skipper and crew on the 420’s. Class limited to 8 students.

High School 420 Racing Camp for 11-17 year olds $250

Fridays 1:00 – 4:00 June 3, 10, 17, 24 Lessons taught by experienced college age sailors. 420’s are supplied. Students need to know how to swim. Experience level ranges from beginners to highly experienced, Less experienced sailors who will crew initially. Class limited to 8 students.

Class X Racing Lessons: Skippers 11 – 16 year olds $350 Crew 8 - 15 year olds $200

Lessons begin early June. Lessons taught by three experienced college age sailors. Students need to have sailing, but not necessarily racing experience. This class will combine all levels of sailing skill, however, after a few lessons, students will be expected to sail in windy conditions. Coaches will teach fundamentals and racing strategies. Coaches will attend regattas with sailors if more than a few attend. Students may use their own X boats, or skippers may rent an OLSS boat for $100 for use in class. Tee shirt included.

Adult lessons in 420’s Ages above 18 $250

5 lessons Mondays 6:00 – 8:00 Starting June 6th. Lessons taught by an experienced adult sailor. Class designed for beginners. Each participant will get two on water sessions in OLSS supplied 420’s at convenient times .

420 Optimist Dinghy Class

420. 14’ double handed, single with and . Preferred boat for high school and collegiate racing. Check out the class website at www.usi420.org.. At the OLSS, we sail the “collegiate” version (without spinnaker), the version used in high school and college. The OLSS currently owns a few 420’s. Suitable for sailors aged 11 – adult.

Optimist Dinghy. Sometimes referred to as the International Optimist Dinghy, or IOD. Its 8’6” long and sailed single handed. It’s the worlds most popular boat. Great for learning, and also raced on Okauchee, as well as local (Waukesha), National and International competitions (regattas). Check out the website at www.usoda.org the OLSS owns 7 IOD’s. Typically families race IOD’s use their own boat. Used boats are plentiful, cheap and (if cared for properly) easy to sell. Suitable for sailors aged 7 – 12 who weigh less than about 100 lbs.

Class X boat. 16’ double handed, single hull sailboat with jib and mainsail. Great for learning, and also raced on Okauchee, as well as local and regional events (regattas). Check out the manufacturers website at www.melges.com The OLSS owns two X boats which can be chartered. Typically families that race these boats own their own. Used boats are plentiful, cheap and (if cared for properly) easy to sell. Suitable for sailors aged 10-16 of any size.
