JANUARY, 1972 *EM$YLVANIA the^ Keystone State's Official 2^ nglerFfSHiNG BOATiNC Single Copy Ice Fisi pne's flere Again page 6 VIEWPOINT 7* by ROBERT J. BIELO Executive Director FAREWELL In past years 1 have used the January "Viewpoint" to present a few New Year's Resolutions. This year when the January ANGLER goes to press 1 will no longer be the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Fish Com mission, thus this will be my last "Viewpoint" column. Looking back briefly I recall that my early days at the Linesville Hatchery convinced me that the work of the Fish Culturist is a combination of hard physical labor, the endurance of extremes of heat and cold and a "Mother's" constant concern over the complex needs of the delicate stock being nurtured. Service as a Waterways Patrolman opened my eyes to pollution and the terrible toll untreated wastes of all kinds were taking of our price less water resources. During this period 1 also had a chance to discover that while a few folks deliberately violated the laws established to protect our fisheries resources, most people willingly observed the laws and were genuinely interested in our fish and wildlife. Later as a Fishery Biologist this interest of growing numbers of Pennsylvanians in the sound management of our natural resources became much more evident, although just ten years ago public concern of outdoors affairs was but a fraction of what it is today. Items of prime concern then involved the many actions of man leading to siltation of our streams and to the seemingly endless schemes to channel all waterways, obliterating most na tural habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms.

By Brad Beebe Y-2692 Looking back on the 2011 Beers, three things come to mind. Wind, wind, and wind. Winds stayed in the 12 MPH range with typical Atlanta Yacht Club gusts for pretty much all of Saturday and Sunday, creating some great conditions for the Juniors, Gold and Blue fleets. The lake was, shall we say, depth challenged as it can be this time of year. But that was a minor nuisance because about the only gasoline burning boats on the lake were the committee, rescue, mark, and spectator boats. Friday started off with Karl Andersen’s annual golf tournament. Ten players competed for the coveted green PFD. Pem Williams, Christa Ross and Steve Ross edged out the other teams to take top honors. 2021 MELGES MC ZENDA UNIVERSITY Lake Eustis Sailing Club · Eustis, Florida March 9-10, 2021 Step into the Zenda University (ZU) course, get tuned up and start your 2021 MC Scow campaign off right! The Melges instructors have been developing new ways to teach you how to go fast. PURPOSE / MISSION To further progress and promote MC Scow racing for those who are eager to learn and take in professional knowledge within a casual, fun atmosphere, ultimately making individuals better sailors by encouraging the enjoyment of the sport of sailing to the fullest. “Zenda University (ZU) was a great experience for a new skipper like me. I had crewed for other boats in a prior life but had not skippered many races until last year. ZU was what I needed to get more competitive and comfortable on the racecourse. Having Andy and Jim instruct during actual races was invaluable. They helped me get my rigging tuned and helped me with sail trim so my boat speed was competitive. We practiced a lot of crowded starts and mark roundings so the chaos was like a regatta. I went home with a list of things to practice and how to practice them. That two days has given me more confidence in my decision-making abilities on the racecourse. There were many times during the races that I was contemplating a tactical decision but wasn't sure if I was right or not. Having Andy tell me to do something that I was already thinking was a huge boost to my confidence. After ZU, I am now racing with my home fleet instead of chasing them from a leg behind.

  • Cadet Dinghy
Cadet Dinghy “Viking” Appendix 2 THE CADET SQUADRON In the early 1930's, Cadet Members of the R.G.Y.C. competed in a conglomeration of small craft. Ern Armstrong recalls that when he joined the club in 1933, the cadet section was comprised of the 12 foot cadets, "Firey Cross", owned and sailed by John Boocock, on which Ern sailed for the last three races of the season and "Viking", owned by Tal and Jim Searle, "Tasma", a flat-bottomed ,low wooded hull approximately 14feet long, owned by the Club, "Teddy bear", a half-decked rather heavy boat owned by Geoff Wood, and "Westra", a semi-decked 12 foot cadet, owned by the McAllisters. At that time the boat storage shed was approximately 40 feet by 30 feet fronting the roadway outside the club opposite Transvaal Square, about in line with the eastern end of the present Junior Squadron clubhouse. In about 1935, two 14 foot boats were added to the fleet. These were "Mulluka", owned by Chick Fleet Snr., and sailed by Jim Ritchie and "NV", a 14footer with narrow beam and a high aspect mainsail built and skippered by Norm Wray. And two more 12 foot cadet dinghies were also added to the fleet, "Caress", built and skippered by Bob Curnow and "Dolphin ", owned and skippered by Wally Wiggs. About this time the Cadet section acquired half of the Sea Scout's shed owned by Mr. Ev Hurst, now the tender dinghy storage shed. This move avoided the long lift from the original shed on the roadway.
