PHOTO BY SHARON GREEN WWW.QUANTUMSAILS.COM THE YRA WELCOMES YOU TO THE 2014 RACING SEASON

Welcome to the YRA’s 2014 Racing Season! As always, we’ve got racing opportunities for everyone, whether you sail a , classic woody or one design boat, sail on the ocean or under PHRF in the Bay. For 2014, the YRA Racing Season offers four different racing options: • Party Circuit: includes our three marquee weekend regattas as well as the Westpoint Regatta. • YRA Series: a four-day series with one race day each month starting in May and running through September. • OYRA: nine fully crewed ocean races this year, and a division for shorthanded crews. • Wooden Boat Series: a full schedule of in-the-Bay racing for Bears, Birds, IODs, Folk- boats and Knarrs. You can find information on the different racing series in this publication and on the YRA website at www.yra.org. The Racer Socials that we started in 2013 will continue. We’re planning on at least three this year with potential topics ranging from a USCG view of the Bay (and racers) to Bay Currents to Rigging. If you have a topic you think we should cover, please let us know. We encourage everyone to get a YRA membership and sign up to race. Your membership support and participation in the YRA goes to help us do everything we do. And we do a lot: • Administer the local PHRF database; more m o than 700 certificates were issued in 2013. • Coordinate with the U.S. Coast Guard to pro- cess event permits – more than 900 permits in

ts.smugmug.c 2013. o sh • Maintain racing buoys in the Bay. rox • Host the US Sailing Area G Appeals Committee. • Advocate for sailing and racing in the Bay Area. • Offer great racing. As always, we want to thank the YRA Mem- ber Yacht Clubs and their Race Committees ROXANNE FAIRBAIRN / WWW. ROXANNE FAIRBAIRN that are sponsoring this year’s YRA Races. We couldn’t do it without you and your support. We know each YRA skipper and crew thanks you as well. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook to keep up with all the latest YRA news. You can find us on Twitter at YRAofSFBay and on Facebook at the YRA of SF Bay page. Get those entries in, get your boats and crews prepped, and get out to the start line for every race you’re scheduled to sail. And they said we couldn’t improve it. The OS2 has become a classic due to its incredible versatility and value. It wasn’t easy finding ways to improve it, but increased collar height with full face protection, new hand warmer chest pockets and a state of the art retractable cuff system have taken it to the next level.

Page 52 • Latitude 38 • 2014 YRA Calendar RULES Latitude 38’s Basic Racing Guidelines BAMA Bay Area Multihull Association Since sailboat racing is a recreational sport, 35th Annual we think the number one rule should be to have fun. Beyond that, some basic guidelines help Double Handed Farallones Race prevent collisions and ensure that racing is both fun and fair. Below is an outline of the ten basic rules which cover most racing situations. For completeness and total accuracy, refer to Rac- ing Rules of Sailing 2013-2016, published by US Sailing. See www.ussailing.org/rules for details. 1. Port tack keep clear of starboard tack.

March 22 JAN ROLETTO Bay Area Multihull Association • Competitive Racing • Monthly Cruise-outs • BAMA Cup Series • Multihull Seminars • Web Based Crew List • Social Activities [email protected] [email protected] www.sfbama.org 2. If boats are on the same tack, and overlapped, 650-394-6343 the windward boat must keep clear of the boat to leeward. 3. If boats are on the same tack, a boat clear astern must keep clear of a boat clear ahead. 4. When tacking or jibing, keep clear of boats on a tack. 5. Avoid collisions. If you have the right of way and hit the other boat, causing damage or injury, you both will be penalized. 6. Don’t obstruct. Don’t make it hard for the ‘keep clear’ boat to do so. (No hunting allowed.) 7. Sail the course prescribed. You have to round the marks in the directions specified in the Sailing Instruc- tions and can’t touch a mark. 8. Proper Course (same tack, within two lengths). If the leeward boat came from astern, leeward boat shall not sail above its own proper course during the overlap. (Remember that the windward boat still has to keep clear, even if windward is forced above what it believes is windward’s proper course. Leeward still has right of way.) 9. Give room at marks and obstructions to yachts overlapped on the inside, except: a. When the overlap did not exist before the lead boat reaches the three-boatlength zone. b. When approaching a windward mark on opposite tack. c. At a starting mark surrounded by navigable water. That is, you don’t have to let a barger in at the start except to avoid collision (then protest). 10. Acknowledge your fouls and protest those who don’t. A free rule book comes with US Sailing membership. See www.ussailing.org.

Three great regattas plus a bonus race!

Welcome to the eighth year of the YRA PC Series! This great series gives you three weekend regattas plus an additional race day in July. The PC Series consists of the three marquee YRA events – the Great Vallejo Race, sponsored by Vallejo Yacht Club; the 2nd Half Opener, spon- sored by Encinal Yacht Club; and the Season Closer, sponsored by Corinthian Yacht Club. Each weekend regatta fea- tures a long distance race on Saturday, a party at the host- ing club Saturday night and a shorter race on Sunday. The new Westpoint Regatta, hosted by Sequoia Yacht Club, is a one-race day. There will be six main divi- sions for each regatta: PHRF, Sportboat, One Design, Mul- tihull, Shorthanded and Non- Spinnaker. We’ll then divide up each division into as many fleets as needed to create good racing. The three weekend regattas plus the new Westpoint Regatta only cost $180 when you sign up for the entire series. We think the PC Series is the best racing WWW.NORCALSAILING.COM value on the Bay! If you were to sign up for each race individually, it would cost you almost $300.

The dates for the 2014 YRA Party Circuit are: • May 3 – The Great Vallejo Race 1, party Saturday night at Vallejo Yacht Club • May 4 – The Great Vallejo Race 2 • July 5 – The Westpoint Regatta • August 2 – The YRA 2nd Half Opener, party Saturday night at Encinal Yacht Club • August 3 – The YRA 2nd Half Opener • September 27 – The YRA Season Closer, party Saturday night at Corinthian Yacht Club • September 28 – The YRA Season Closer Sign up online at www.yra.org or call the YRA office for more information at (415) 771-9500.

SAILS – in just your size and in the fastest of shapes!

2014 YRA Calendar • Latitude 38 • Page 69 YOUTH SAILING

Looking for a new way to entertain your kids this year? Look no further than the Bay Area’s dozens of junior sailing programs. Many of- fer scholarships, and, with rare exception, you don’t need to have your own boat. Unless noted below, club membership is not necessary. High School sailing for students in grades 9-12 takes place around Northern California in the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association. If your high school doesn’t have a team – or enough students to field a team – don’t fret. Most pro- grams allow students from several schools to form a single team.
