  • Retain the Women's Keelboat in 2016 Olympics in November 2008
Retain the Women’s Keelboat in 2016 Olympics In November 2008 when ISAF Executive Council selected the Elliott 6m as the supplied keelboat for the Women’s keelboat match racing event at the 2012 Olympic Games they catapulted women’s sailing into the 21st century. The Elliott 6m is modern, faster than any previous women’s Olympic keel yacht and exciting to sail with at the 204 kg crew weight. The new boat has been welcomed by women sailors throughout the world. Coming from a variety of different sailing disciplines the athletes learned quickly that they needed to embrace the Olympic philosophy of human performance to sail Faster, Higher and Stronger in the event. And they have. The Elliott 6m has been used as supplied equipment for the ISAF Sailing World Cup since 2009. Competition quickly became intense as teams developed their skill and athleticism. Every leg of the Sailing World Cup events was won by a different team with Lucy MacGregor (GBR) eventually being crowned the winner. The event has flourished inside the Olympic programme and provides an effective platform for elite sailors and promotion of the sport between Olympics. It has provided a further pathway to retain champions and previous medal winners in an Olympic sailing event keeping these inspirational athletes in the sport. Sailors fight hard to win a place in the Gold Fleet at every SWC event. Teams from emerging sailing nations, such as China & Slovenia have entered the SWC rankings near the bottom and in 2011 are making it into the Silver fleet at these events.

  • 2020 Fall Dinghy Series Notice of Race
“2020 Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club Fall Dinghy Series” Sept 7 thru Nov 1, 2020 NOTICE OF RACE 1 RULES 1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. 2 SAFETY 2.1 Life jacket and shoes are required for each sailor. Juniors are required to wear life jackets while sailing. 2.2 It is anticipated that Covid 19 safety precautions will still be in place and you are expected to follow the Beaufort County Face Mask Ordinance as well as CDC recommendations. An informal social time with refreshments may be organized for after the races and/or at awards, but everyone is responsible for their own safety, including self distancing. Masks are optional while racing, but are required to be worn on shore in those situations which inherently put people within 6 feet of fellow attendees. If you are not comfortable with the social arrangements it is your responsibility to avoid the social gatherings. 2.3 US Sailing, South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association and BYSC recommend singlehanded sailing or family sailing during the Covid 19 Pandemic. The safety and health of each member (or participant, or sailor) is the responsibility of the individual member (or participant, or sailor). 2.4 The signal boat will be minimally staffed due to social distancing guidelines. Competitors are requested to take this into consideration during the course of events. 3 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY 3.1 The regatta is open to one-design dinghy classes. The Regatta is only open to BYSC members and students of BCSB.

This past winter and spring have brought record rainfall and the highest Lake Erie levels since the 1920s. As a result, even getting on the water has been an effort. JANUARY, 1972 *EM$YLVANIA the^ Keystone State's Official 2^ nglerFfSHiNG BOATiNC Single Copy Ice Fisi pne's flere Again page 6 VIEWPOINT 7* by ROBERT J. BIELO Executive Director FAREWELL In past years 1 have used the January "Viewpoint" to present a few New Year's Resolutions. This year when the January ANGLER goes to press 1 will no longer be the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Fish Com mission, thus this will be my last "Viewpoint" column. Looking back briefly I recall that my early days at the Linesville Hatchery convinced me that the work of the Fish Culturist is a combination of hard physical labor, the endurance of extremes of heat and cold and a "Mother's" constant concern over the complex needs of the delicate stock being nurtured. Service as a Waterways Patrolman opened my eyes to pollution and the terrible toll untreated wastes of all kinds were taking of our price less water resources. During this period 1 also had a chance to discover that while a few folks deliberately violated the laws established to protect our fisheries resources, most people willingly observed the laws and were genuinely interested in our fish and wildlife. Later as a Fishery Biologist this interest of growing numbers of Pennsylvanians in the sound management of our natural resources became much more evident, although just ten years ago public concern of outdoors affairs was but a fraction of what it is today. Items of prime concern then involved the many actions of man leading to siltation of our streams and to the seemingly endless schemes to channel all waterways, obliterating most na tural habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms.

Cultivating a Rich and ISSUE 56-08 Proud Legacy of Boating AUGUST 2015 for Pleasure and Sport Waterlines Editor Kim Marian Submissions due by the 4th Tuesday of the month prior to publication - 500 words or less please. [email protected] In This Issue From the Helm p1-2 Social Committee p2-3 From the Helm Race/Interlakes p4-5 Bonus From the Helm p6-7 Our Annual Regatta Race/Hound Dog p8-9 Race/Mac Wrap-up p10-11 As we rapidly approach the Hound Dog Regatta, I’d like to Misc. Ramblings p12 use my bully pulpit to again invite and implore all of our Nominations Time p13 membership to take part in the weekend’s activities. In my Coast Guard Day p13 mind, the idea of an “annual regatta” is not just the high Coming Events p14 point of any yacht club’s sailing season, but a time-tested Heard ‘Round the Club p14 responsibility in which our club serves to both draw us together as well as welcoming guests from across our region. On the bulkhead of my Tartan 27, Olin, hangs a framed postcard from a very different era that depicts an extremely familiar scene. Most likely produced in the late ‘40s or early ‘50s, it depicts the awards ceremony at the end of a regatta at the Put-In-Bay Yacht Club on Lake Erie. The scene is identical to that of similar occasions that most of us have attended. If you’ll indulge my practice of undergraduate-level art history interpretation, I’ll point out many of the constants that we see to this day.

By Brad Beebe Y-2692 Looking back on the 2011 Beers, three things come to mind. Wind, wind, and wind. Winds stayed in the 12 MPH range with typical Atlanta Yacht Club gusts for pretty much all of Saturday and Sunday, creating some great conditions for the Juniors, Gold and Blue fleets. The lake was, shall we say, depth challenged as it can be this time of year. But that was a minor nuisance because about the only gasoline burning boats on the lake were the committee, rescue, mark, and spectator boats. Friday started off with Karl Andersen’s annual golf tournament. Ten players competed for the coveted green PFD. Pem Williams, Christa Ross and Steve Ross edged out the other teams to take top honors. • Transits of the Northwest Passage to End of the 2020 Navigation Season Atlantic Ocean ↔ Arctic Ocean ↔ Pacific Ocean
TRANSITS OF THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE TO END OF THE 2020 NAVIGATION SEASON ATLANTIC OCEAN ↔ ARCTIC OCEAN ↔ PACIFIC OCEAN R. K. Headland and colleagues 7 April 2021 Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, United Kingdom, CB2 1ER. <[email protected]> The earliest traverse of the Northwest Passage was completed in 1853 starting in the Pacific Ocean to reach the Atlantic Oceam, but used sledges over the sea ice of the central part of Parry Channel. Subsequently the following 319 complete maritime transits of the Northwest Passage have been made to the end of the 2020 navigation season, before winter began and the passage froze. These transits proceed to or from the Atlantic Ocean (Labrador Sea) in or out of the eastern approaches to the Canadian Arctic archipelago (Lancaster Sound or Foxe Basin) then the western approaches (McClure Strait or Amundsen Gulf), across the Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean, through the Bering Strait, from or to the Bering Sea of the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Circle is crossed near the beginning and the end of all transits except those to or from the central or northern coast of west Greenland. The routes and directions are indicated. Details of submarine transits are not included because only two have been reported (1960 USS Sea Dragon, Capt. George Peabody Steele, westbound on route 1 and 1962 USS Skate, Capt. Joseph Lawrence Skoog, eastbound on route 1). Seven routes have been used for transits of the Northwest Passage with some minor variations (for example through Pond Inlet and Navy Board Inlet) and two composite courses in summers when ice was minimal (marked ‘cp’).
