La prima sezione, curata da Francesco Gaetano Moiraghi, si concentra sull’analisi di Cosa nostra. La seconda sezione, che sposta il focus sulla ‘ndrangheta, è curata da Andrea Zolea. Come si potrà notare, le due sezioni non sono state realizzate secondo uno stesso modello, ma analizzano le due organizzazioni con un approccio differente. White, The Making of the President, 19681 Richard Nixon, like millions of other Americans, enjoyed Florida and the nearby islands of Cuba and the Bahamas as refuges where he could leave behind his many cares and inhibitions. But he also returned again and again to the region as an important ongoing source of political and financial support. In the process, the lax ethics of its shadier operators left its mark on his career. This Sunbelt frontier had long attracted more than its share of sleazy businessmen, promoters, and politicians who shared a get-rich-quick spirit. In Florida, hustlers made quick fortunes selling worthless land to gullible northerners and fleecing vacationers at illegal but wide-open gambling joints. Sheriffs and governors protected bookmakers and casino operators in return for campaign contributions and bribes. In nearby island nations, as described in chapter 4, dictators forged alliances with US mobsters to create havens for offshore gambling and to wield political influence in Washington. Nixon’s Caribbean milieu had roots in the mobster-infested Florida of the 1940s. He was introduced to that circle through banker and real estate investor Bebe Rebozo, lawyer Richard Danner, and Rep. George Smathers. Later this chapter will explore some of the diverse connections of this group by following the activities of Danner during the 1968 presidential campaign, as they touched on Nixon’s financial and political ties to Howard Hughes, the South Florida crime organization of Santo Trafficante, and mobbed-up hotels and casinos in Las Vegas and Miami.

La drammatica vicenda dei Fasci dei Lavoratori in Sicilia rappresenta la fase conclusiva di un lungo processo di crisi che si manifestò nel distorto svi- luppo dell’economia siciliana dell’Ottocento e nelle forme che assunse la politica a livello delle amministrazioni locali ma anche a livello nazionale. Se si guarda bene alle cause di questa crisi, molte di esse vanno individua- te nel mancato “governo” dei processi che determinarono una aberrante ridi- stribuzione della grande proprietà fondiaria. L’idea che fu alla base dell’ever- sione delle terre feudali (1812) e delle ricorrenti confische delle terre eccle- siastiche, cioè che si potesse creare una piccola proprietà contadina attraver- so la quotizzazione delle proprietà divenute demaniali, fallì miseramente a causa dell’ingordigia dei proprietari terrieri che aggirarono in tanti modi la legge, grazie anche alla connivenza del potere politico. Most physical evidence of the site was blasted away in the early 19th century to make way for Castle Street, but St Paul's Episcopal Church, High Street, still clings to a small portion of this dolerite exposure. Its existence is implied in the early 13th century by the name Castle Wynd but the first documentary evidence of the castle is in 1290 when Brian FitzAlan was made custodian of the castles of Forfar and Dundee.1 Lamb argues that the fortification was extensive, and maintained at least 130 knights and horseman within its walls. This may be supported by the details of provisioning of the castle in various records, but in particular from the English Exchequer Rolls of the reign of Edwards I and II, although all provisions would not necessarily be destined solely for the occupants of the castle, but possibly also for retainers nearby.2 Taken by the English at the beginning of the Wars of Independence, the castle was then successfully seized by Sir Alexander Scrymgeour who was, in reward, made hereditary constable of the castle of Dundee in 1298 by William Wallace.3 It has been claimed that the castle was destroyed on the instruction of Wallace.

MAKIDON Director of Publications Grace Evangelical Society Irving, Texas Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. — Jude 3 I. INTRODUCTION For most, the Lordship controversy began in the late 1970’s to early 1980’s. However, in an article entitled “History Repeats Itself,” J. I. Packer correctly noted, “The view that saving faith is no more than ‘belief of the truth about Christ’s atoning death’ is not new. It was put forward in the mid-eighteenth century by the Scot Robert Sandeman.”1 If the average Free Grace proponent was told that their view of saving faith was nothing more than a revival of Robert Sandeman’s theology, they would most likely ask, “Who’s Robert Sandeman?” After discussing the ministry of Sandeman and the ill effects of his view of faith, Packer concludes by stating, “The narrow intellectualism of Sandeman’s view of faith dampened life-changing evangelism. This was one reason why the Glasite-Sandemanian denomination did not survive.”2 Nevertheless, Sandeman’s motto “contending earnestly for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints”3 clearly demonstrates that he was not vying for denominational superiority.
