2 Abstract
With the rise of Internet, the development of international business and the globalization, Chinese language and culture are being influenced by Western ones. Nowadays, people from all over the world use the Internet to communicate with each other, to read the news, to watch movies, etc., and Internet services are becoming really essential in everyday life. English is the main Internet language and, therefore, more and more English words are found in Chinese media. Experts say it’s a growing tendency. This thesis focuses on English loanwords in modern Chinese, in particular in Chinese Internet language, accompanied by an overview of this developing phenomenon, the translation of four related articles and a linguistic and translational commentary. The thesis is divided into three sections. The first section consists of an introduction that aims to provide an overall understanding of the different types of borrowings (direct borrowings, transliterations, calques, hybrid words), the English influence on Chinese language and the problems that this phenomenon causes, with related solutions. The second section is a translation from Chinese into Italian of four selected texts. The first one is about new English transliterations in The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (6th edition), the second one is about English loanwords used by a conspicuous number of newspaper in Guangzhou in 2005, while the third and the fourth ones give a lot of examples of English borrowings in Chinese Internet language. Every article was published in an academic newspaper. The third and final section, which is the most important one, consists of an analysis of the translated texts, an illustration of the main problems faced during the translation process and the solutions adopted to solve them and to produce a correct Italian text. A bibliography can be found at the end of this paper.
