Each of these books has contributed around 250 lines of text, sufficient to provide comprehensive coverage of the storyline and principal characters. Virgil’s great work has inevitably been dipped into many times over the years. The intention behind this set of selections is to provide the kind of layout and help appropriate to the needs of students with only a few years of study behind them. The book is suitable as a reader for its own sake or to act as a prescribed text for examination. The characters and storyline are summarised in the Introduction; students reading a single book should read this summary first. Significant gaps between Latin passages are summarised in Italics. The principle behind the glossing of words is that all except for the commonest words are glossed, with meanings appropriate to the context. Students wanting a reminder of the word’s meaning can consult the complete alphabetical word list, which is printed at the end of the book. When a word is repeated in the same book, it is not glossed again, unless the meaning has changed. Verbs are given two principal parts if they are used with the present stem, otherwise three or four parts; following the principle used in a number of current text books, the perfect participle passive replaces the supine as the fourth principal part. Since students are likely to focus on one book, full glossing recommences at the start of each book. The Introduction aims to set the story of the Aeneid into its mythological, literary and historical context. Students preparing for GCSE or similar examinations will need little of the information provided there, but those progressing beyond the boundaries of a single book may find at least some of the detail helpful. Those who wish to explore further will find the long- established editions of Williams or Page helpful. The notes aim to help students to understand references to characters, places and events, though only at a basic level. Teachers may wish to expand these references in class. The notes also help students to cope with more challenging linguistic items, and point out some stylistic features. The questions test students’ comprehension of the characters and storyline, and give them practice in handling literary terms. The Introduction contains a list of the commonest literary devices, which are generally considered appropriate for students at this level of study. The text is that of Williams (1972 and 1996), with the following exceptions: all accusative plural endings in -is have been changed to -es, and the lower case is used for initial letters of paragraphs. Line numbers alongside the text are the standard line numbers from the complete books, following Williams where the manuscripts are unclear. Virgil and the Aeneid Virgil began composing the Aeneid in about 30 bc, continuing to work on it until his death at the age of 50 in 19 BC. He was commissioned to write the work by Octavian, who in 31 BC had defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium, thereby gaining supreme power in Rome. Octavian devoted the next four years to making his power secure, with the result that, in 27 BC, he became the first emperor, with the title Augustus. Although he was popular with many sections of Roman society from the moment of his triumph over Antony, he was anxious to avoid the same fate as his adoptive father, Julius Caesar, who, in similar circumstances, had been assassinated in 44 BC by a group of senators. One means available to Octavian of securing his position was self- publicity. Among the various methods regularly used by statesmen of the time was glorification through poetry; in fact it was entirely fashionable for successful and wealthy statesmen to pay poets within their patronage to write poems of various lengths extolling the virtues and achievements of their patron. The poets Horace, Propertius and Virgil were in turn invited to produce an epic poem with Octavian, later Augustus, as its hero. All at first refused, deterred no doubt by the conflicting demands of historical distortion and artistry. Then Virgil changed his mind, having devised a way of combining the positive presentation of Octavian and his victory with the need of all true poets for creative self- expression. And so the Aeneid was born. By the time of Virgil, the tradition of epic poetry was at least 700 years old. Many poets of the classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods produced a wide range of epic poems of very varying quality. None came close to achieving the status accorded by general consent to Homer, the first of the surviving epic poets, who composed the Iliad and Odyssey probably during the late eighth century BC. Homer’s works were widely known and read in Virgil’s Rome, much as Shakespeare is in today’s society. Virgil took upon himself the delicate task of composing an epic similar enough to the Iliad and Odyssey for the two poets to be directly compared, but different enough for Virgil to avoid charges of plagiarism. The Aeneid would combine a conventional epic tale of heroic endeavour (the story of Aeneas), the ancestry of Rome and its leaders, glorification of Rome and the Augustan regime, and an example of the social and moral responsibilities that a pius or dutiful leader ought to be prepared to shoulder. Doubtless Virgil’s contemporaries would have been surprised by a first reading of this literary cocktail: Augustus and his victory at Actium are barely mentioned; and yet from a closer scrutiny, Augustus and his achievements shine forth with more persuasive clarity than any more overt form of flattery could have achieved.

Some of these fragments contain details about the Theban wars (the war of the SEVEN and that of the EPIGONI), others about the prowesses of Heracles 1 and Theseus, others about the origin of the gods, and still others about events related to the Trojan War. The latter, called Trojan Cycle, narrate events that occurred before the war (Cypria), during the war (Aethiopis, Little Iliad, and Sack of Ilium ), and after the war (Returns, and Telegony). The term epic (derived from Greek épos = word, song) is generally applied to narrative poems which describe the deeds of heroes in war, an astounding process of mutual destruction that periodically and frequently affects mankind. This kind of poetry was composed in early times, being chanted by minstrels during the 'Dark Ages'—before 800 BC—and later written down during the Archaic period— from c. 700 BC). Greek Epic is the earliest surviving form of Greek (and therefore "Western") literature, and precedes lyric poetry, elegy, drama, history, philosophy, mythography, etc.

    Vergil’s Nisus and the Language of Self-Sacrifice in Paradise Lost LEAH WHITTINGTON Princeton University When the Son of God offers to die for mankind in book 3 of Paradise Lost (1667), readers who have been tempted to join the devil’s party for the first two books of the poem confront an unsettling dramatic scene: the assembly in heaven is staged as a mirror image of the demonic council at Pandemonium. The listening host suddenly grows quiet, and a solitary hero figure emerges out of the silence to take on the burden of raising the collective fortune. Placed beside the Son’s promise to atone for man’s sin with his death, Satan’s exploratory mission to earth comes into focus as a fallen reflection of self-sacrifice, a self-aggrandiz- ing perversion of the poem’s heroic ideal now articulated in the Son. This moment of internal self-reference has often been identified as part of Milton’s didactic strategy to confront the reader with proof of his own fallenness,1 but it is less often recognized that the Son’s speech to the angelic host makes use of an allusion that gives it a central place in the story of Milton’s engagement with classical epic.2 When the Son 1.     Let’s Think About This Reasonably: The Conflict of Passion and Reason in Virgil’s The Aeneid Scott Kleinpeter Course: English 121 Honors Instructor: Joan Faust Essay Type: Poetry Analysis It has long been a philosophical debate as to which is more important in human nature: the ability to feel or the ability to reason. Both functions are integral in our composition as balanced beings, but throughout history, some cultures have invested more importance in one than the other. Ancient Rome, being heavily influenced by stoicism, is probably the earliest example of a society based fundamentally on reason. Its most esteemed leaders and statesmen such as Cicero and Marcus Aurelius are widely praised today for their acumen in affairs of state and personal ethics which has survived as part of the classical canon. But when mentioning the classical canon, and the argument that reason is essential to civilization, a reader need not look further than Virgil’s The Aeneid for a more relevant text. The Aeneid’s protagonist, Aeneas, is a pious man who relies on reason instead of passion to see him through adversities and whose actions are foiled by a cast of overly passionate characters. Personages such as Dido and Juno are both portrayed as emotionally-laden characters whose will is undermined by their more rational counterparts. Also, reason’s importance is expressed in a different way in Book VI when Aeneas’s father explains the role reason will play in the future Roman Empire. Because The Aeneid’s antagonists are capricious individuals who either die or never find contentment, the text very clearly shows the necessity of reason as a human trait for survival and as a means to discover lasting happiness.

Through analysis of material culture, historiography, and poetry that originated during the principate of Augustus, it becomes clear that each of these sources of evidence contributes to the public image projected by the leader whom Ronald Syme considered to be the first Roman emperor. The Ara Pacis Augustae and the Res Gestae Divi Augustae embody the legacy the Emperor wished to establish, and each of these cultural works contain significant references to the Vestal Virgins. The study of history Livy undertook also emphasized the pathetic plight of Rhea Silvia as she was compelled to become a Vestal. Livy and his contemporary Dionysius of Halicarnassus explored the foundation of the Vestal Order and each writer had his own explanation about how Numa founded it. The Roman poets Virgil, Horace, Ovid, and Tibullus incorporated Vesta and the Vestals into their work in a way that offers further proof of the way Augustus insinuated himself into the fabric of Roman cultural identity by associating his public image with these honored priestesses.

    Birth of War – Aeneid 7 page 1 THE BIRTH OF WAR -- A Reading of Aeneid 7 Sara Mack In this essay I will touch on aspects of Book 7 that readers are likely either to have trouble with (the Muse Erato, for one) or not to notice at all (the founding of Ardea is a prime example), rather than on major elements of plot. I will also look at some of the intertexts suggested by Virgil's allusions to other poets and to his own poetry. We know that Virgil wrote with immense care, finishing fewer than three verses a day over a ten-year period, and we know that he is one of the most allusive (and elusive) of Roman poets, all of whom wrote with an eye and an ear on their Greek and Roman predecessors. We twentieth-century readers do not have in our heads what Virgil seems to have expected his Augustan readers to have in theirs (Homer, Aeschylus, Euripides, Apollonius, Lucretius, and Catullus, to name just a few); reading the Aeneid with an eye to what Virgil has "stolen" from others can enhance our enjoyment of the poem. Book 7 is a new beginning. So the Erato invocation, parallel to the invocation of the Muse in Book 1, seems to indicate. I shall begin my discussion of the book with an extended look at some of the implications of the Erato passage. These difficult lines make a good introduction to the themes of the book as a whole (to the themes of the whole second half of the poem, in fact).

    On Translating Homer’s Iliad Caroline Alexander Abstract: This reflective essay explores the considerations facing a translator of Homer’s work; in par- ticular, the considerations famously detailed by the Victorian poet and critic Matthew Arnold, which re- main the gold standard by which any Homeric translation is measured today. That is a task for which I have neither the time nor the courage.”1 So begins Matthew Arnold’s classic essay “On Translating Ho- mer,” the North Star by which all subsequent trans- lators of Homer have steered, and the gold stan- dard by which all translations of Homer are judged. A reader will find Arnold’s principles referenced, directly or indirectly, in the introduction to most modern translations–Richmond Lattimore’s, Rob- ert Fagles’s, Robert Fitzgerald’s, and more recently Peter Green’s. Additionally, Arnold’s discussion of these principles serves as a primer of sorts for poets and writers of any stripe, not only those audacious enough to translate Homer. Greek people inhabited not only the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula (Hellas), but also part of the coast of Asia Minor, part of Italy, and many islands in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas, including Crete and Sicily. On the Balkan mainland, mountains and the surrounding sea led to divisions into many petty local states, which carried on continual warfare with each other. The primitive inhabitants were a mixture of three strains: (1) Pelasgians or Helladics. The earliest known inhabitants of the Greek mainland, they were perhaps related to the inhabitants of Asia Minor, and they probably were not Indo-Europeans. Little is known of them except what can be learned from legends and from the archeological discoveries of Schliemann and Evans. (2) Aegeo-Cretans. They were probably of Mediterranean origin and probably blended with the Pelasgians c. 1800-1400 B.C. (3) Northern Indo- Europeans. Variously called Achaeans, Danaans, and Hellenes, these people probably migrated from the north of Greece c. 2000- 1000 B.C. After 1150 B.C. there were three rather distinct racial groups: (1) Dorians. Their main settlements were the Peloponnesus, the Corinthian Isthmus, the southwest portion of Asia Minor, Crete, Sicily, and parts of Italy; their principal cities were Sparta, Corinth, and Syracuse. The Dorians were warlike, reserved, and devout. Their dialect was terse and rugged. They perfected the. “stately choral ode.” (2) Aeolians. The principal Aeolian settlements were Boeotia, Lesbos, and northwestern Asia Minor.
