The Lab supports emerging filmmakers in India, as part of the Institute’s sustained commitment to international artists, which in the last 25 years has included programs in Brazil, Mexico, Jordan, Turkey, Japan, Cuba, Israel and Central Europe. Now in its second year, the fourday Lab is a creative and strategic partnership between Drishyam Films and Sundance Institute, and gives independent screenwriters the opportunity to work intensively on their feature film scripts in an environment that encourages innovation and creative risktaking. The Lab is centered around oneonone story sessions with creative advisors. Screenwriting fellows engage in an artistically rigorous process that offers lessons in craft, a fresh perspective on their work and a platform to fully realize their material. Leading the Lab in India is Drishyam founder, Manish Mundra. He said, “A beautiful heritage city in my hometown of Rajasthan, Udaipur forms an ideal writers retreat, and is the perfect environment for a diverse group of emerging writers and renowned mentors to have a refreshing and productive exchange. Our goal is that the six selected Indian projects, after undergoing a comprehensive mentoring process, will quickly move from script to screen and make their mark globally. -

the science inside SKIN AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE Dear Reader: Science data and statistics are always changing, and it is important to be informed of current research. To help keep you up-to-date with the latest information on skin health, the American Association for the Advancement of Science would like to share the following updates regarding skin health: N Major medical groups, including the CDC, recommend using sun- screen with an SPF of 15 or higher. However, a growing number of health care providers, including the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, suggest products of SPF 30 or higher, particularly for those whose skin burns easily. (See references on pages 17, 32, and 45.) N The number of doctor visits Americans make each year to get skin rashes checked out has dropped from 11.8 million to 10 million, according to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey: 2006 Summary, National Health Statistics Report No. 3. (See reference on page 23.) http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr003.pdf is the most recent data. Check the site for regular updates to the statistics. N According to the CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries, 53,792 new cases of melanoma were reported in 2005, the most recent year for which statistics were available in Summer 2009. The National Cancer Institute estimates that 68,720 new cases will be diagnosed in 2009. (See reference on page 36.) N Estimates vary as to the likelihood of developing melanoma during the average American’s lifetime. MedlinePlus, developed by the National Institutes of Health, estimates that 1 in 65 people will be diagnosed with melanoma at some point in their life. -

24 The Garmentof Adam in Jewish, Muslim, and ChristianTradition Stephen D. Ricks Although rarely occurring in any detail, the motif of Adam's garment appears with surprising frequency in ancient Jewish and Christian literature. (I am using the term "Adam's garment" as a cover term to include any garment bestowed by a divine being to one of the patri archs that is preserved and passed on, in many instances, from one generation to another. I will thus also consider garments divinely granted to other patriarchal figures, including Noah, Abraham, and Joseph.) Although attested less often than in the Jewish and Christian sources, the motif also occurs in the literature of early Islam, espe cially in the Isra'iliyyiit literature in the Muslim authors al ThaclabI and al-Kisa'I as well as in the Rasii'il Ikhwiin al ~afa (Epistles of the Brethren of Purity). Particularly when discussing the garment of Adam in the Jewish tradition, I will shatter chronological boundaries, ranging from the biblical, pseudepigraphic, and midrashic references to the garment of Adam to its medieval attestations. 1 In what fol lows, I wish to consider (1) the garment of Adam as a pri mordial creation; (2) the garment as a locus of power, a symbol of authority, and a high priestly garb; and (3) the garment of Adam and heavenly robes. 2 705 706 STEPHEN D. The Garment of Adam as a Primordial Creation The traditions of Adam's garment in the Hebrew Bible begin quite sparely, with a single verse in Genesis 3:21, where we are informed that "God made garments of skins for Adam and for his wife and clothed them." Probably the oldest rabbinic traditions include the view that God gave garments to Adam and Eve before the Fall but that these were not garments of skin (Hebrew 'or) but instead gar ments of light (Hebrew 'or). -

The national ideologies of pluralism, democracy, and secularism for India and of Islam for Pakistan grew out of the pre-independence struggle between the Congress and the All-India Muslim League, and in the early 1990s the line between domestic and foreign politics in India’s relations with Pakistan remained blurred. Because great-power competition—between the United States and the Soviet Union and between the Soviet Union and China—became intertwined with the conflicts between India and Pakistan, India was unable to attain its goal of insulating South Asia from global rivalries. This superpower involvement enabled Pakistan to use external force in the face of India’s superior endowments of population and resources. The most difficult problem in relations between India and Pakistan since partition in August 1947 has been their dispute over Kashmir. -

Berlin ne of the key milestones in world history has been the rise to prominence Oof new and influential states in world affairs. The recent trajectories of China and India suggest strongly that these states will play a more powerful role in the world in the coming decades.1 One recent analysis, for example, judges that “the likely emergence of China and India ...asnewglobal players—similar to the advent of a united Germany in the 19th century and a powerful United States in the early 20th century—will transform the geopolitical landscape, with impacts potentially as dramatic as those in the two previous centuries.”2 India’s rise, of course, has been heralded before—perhaps prematurely. History and Heritage serves as a country's identity and are inextricable from each other. Simply speaking, while 'history' concerns itself with the study of past events of humans; 'heritage' refers to the traditions and buildings inherited by us from the remote past. However, they are not as simple as it seems to be. The question on historical consciousness and subsequently the preservation of heritage, intangible or living, remains a critical issue. There has always remained a major gap between the historians or professional academics on one hand, and the general public on the other hand regarding the understanding of history and importance of heritage structures. This paper tends to examine the nature of laws passed in Indian history right from the Treasure Trove Act of 1878 till AMASR Amendment Bill of 2017 and its effects with respect to heritage management. It also analyses the sites of Sanchi, Bodh Gaya, and Bharhut Stupa in this context. Moreover, the need and role of the museums has to be considered. The truth lies in the fact that artefacts and traditions both display 'connected histories'; and that the workings of archaeology, history, and heritage studies together is responsible for the continuing dialogue between past, present, and future. -
