DIRECTOR OF CENSUS OPERATIONS ANDHRA PRADESH- PUII.ISIiIIO IT TMI ~VERNMENT Of ANOHRA PRADI!SH 1973 INTENSIVE AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME IN WEST GODAVARI DISTRICT West Godavari District irrigated by the waters of river Godavari is one of the [ most progressive districts for agriculture and other agro~based industries and trade. More than three fourths of the total cropped area is under assured irrigation. The cultivators in this district are by and large fertiliser minded and educated for preventing pests and disease attacks of crops both by cultural and chemical methods. The farmers in this district have long experience in improved methods of cultivation and produce sizeable marketable surplus every year. It is, for these reasons that the Intensive Agricultural Divtrict programme known as the Package Programme was started first in West Godavari District in 1960 aiming at further increasing the production offood and important commercial crops. West Godavari District ranks first among the rice growing districts in the State, both in regard to area under crop and in respect of production. The area under rice in 1970-71 in this district is 384,367 hectares constituting 70.5% of the total cropped area in the district and 10.9% of the total area under the crop in Andhra Pradesh State. The annual outturn of rice in this district is 659,078 tonnes which forms 13.8% of the total outturn in the State. -

Jan-April, 1987 83 a PILOT STUDY to DETERMINE THE
Prize winning paper A PILOT STUDY TO DETERMINE THE PREVALENCE OF DIABETES MELLITUS IN THE RURAL POPULATION OF SOUTH INDIA P. Vishnupriya Rao1, K. Ushabala2, N. Srinivasa Rao3, V. Seshiah4 and M.M.S. Ahuja5 Following the reports on the prevalence of known diabetes mellitus cases among the Indian populations living in Southall1, London and New Delhi2 there has been an increased awareness that Indians might rank high in the ethnic susceptibility for diabetes. Our knowledge concerning the true prevalence of diabetes in India is limited and unfortunately the prevalence of this disease in rural population is not well known inspite of the fact that more than 70% of the Indian population lives in villages. A summary of Indian literature on prevalence of diabetes in rural populations is given in table l. Methods A house to house survey was made at all households in two villages - Perugugudem and Chodimella, and within a defined area of a rural town - Eluru of West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh State. Age and sex data was recorded for all the residents and they were asked whether anyone in the family is known to be diabetic. This survey was done in the first week of December 1986. Results Information was obtained on 1,948 residents, 605 residents and 1,026 residents (total 3,579) from Eluru town, Perugugudem and Chodimella respectively. Table 2 shows the detailed features of these areas surveyed for this study. A total of 84 persons were reported diabetic, indicating crude prevalences of 2.1, 4.1 and 1.8 from Eluru, Perugugudem and Chodimella respectively. -
Existance of Soil Flora in the Soils of Oil Palm Growing Areas of Andhra Pradesh
RESEARCH PAPER Biochemistry Volume : 3 | Issue : 8 | Aug 2013 | ISSN - 2249-555X Existance of Soil Flora in the Soils of Oil Palm Growing Areas of Andhra Pradesh KEYWORDS Oil Palm, soil microbes, soil mineral nutrition, Nitrification G. Swarna latha Dr. Amara Srinivasulu G. Suneetha Department of Biochemistry, Department of Biochemistry, V.S. Department of Biochemistry, GITAM Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, Lakshmi College, Kakinada, India. University, Visakhapatnam, India India. ABSTRACT A study was undertaken to assess the status of soil microbes in oil palm plantation and its contribution to organic matter and mineral nutrients. The soil microbes are present far and wide. Plants are unable to take nutrition without microbes in the soil. Microbes are alive, and must have nutrition to survive, which comes from organic matter. Microbes consume nutrients, microbes undergo metabolism of nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and trace minerals for plants. The microbes convert nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and minerals in the soil to produce food and flowers into a form by which the plants can use. The results revealed that soils are acidic to slightly alkaline and reveals the existence of microorganisms within 15 mandals of Andhra Pradesh, India. The most widely distrib- uted microorganisms are observed in mandals of Bhimadolu, Chepurigudem, Jangareddygudem and Chepurigudem that are added to the yield of the micro-organisms. The widely distributed micro-organisms are Lactobacillus acidophilus, Sal- monella typhimurium, Enterococcus faecalis, Serratia marcescens, Alcaligenes faecalis, Micrococcus ureae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis, Alcaligenes denitrificans, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, Neis- seria gonorrhoeae, and Acinetobacter calcoaecticus. Introduction: The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a Soil organisms break the organic matter, and excess nutri- major plantation crop used in commercial production of ents (N, P and S) are released into the soil. -
