Selected examples con- cerning species of micro-buthoid scorpions are given. The possible factors responsible for litter-size variation in these species are discussed. It is concluded that (i) reduction of litter size in these species is independent of ecological factors, (ii) litter size is directly proportional to the size of the female and inversely proportional to the size of the young, (iii) large body size of pro- juveniles at birth seems to be associated with a more ‘complete’ embryonic development, (iv) post-embryonic development is achieved with a smaller number of instars, (v) morphometric growth values are higher than those observed for other buthoids. El tamaño de la camada en los escorpiones microbutoides (Chelicerata, Scorpiones) Resumen: Se presenta, tabulada, toda la información disponible sobre el tamaño de la camada en los escorpiones butoides. Se incluyen ejemplos escogidos de especies de escorpiones microbutoides. Se discuten los posibles factores que determinan el tamaño de las camadas, y se concluye que (i) la reducción en el tamaño de la camada de estas especies es independiente de factores ecológicos, (ii) el tamaño de la camada es directamente proporcional al tamaño de la hembra e inversamente pro- porcional al tamaño de las crías, (iii) el nacimiento de pro-juveniles de gran tamaño parece ir asociado a un desarrollo embrio- nario más “completo”, (iv) el desarrollo postembrionario se lleva a cabo en un menor número de estadios, (v) los valores del crecimiento morfométrico son más altos que los que se observan en otros butoides. SHORT COMMUNICATION Rediscovery of the holotype of Leiurus berdmorei Blyth, 1853 (Sauria: Gekkonidae) Indraneil Das* and Basudeb Dattagupta** The gekkonid Leiurus berdmorei was described by Blyth (1853: 646) from "Mergui" (in Myanmar), and named for its collector, Captain Thomas Mathew Berdmore (1811-1859). By the time the taxon was synonymised by Boulenger (1885) under Hemidactylus bowringii (Gray, 1845), a decision followed by most recent reviewers, including Wermuth (1965) and Kluge (1993), it had already been referred to the genus Doryura by Theobald (1868: 29) and Hemidactylus (Doryura) by Stoliczka (1872: 100) (who redescribed and illustrated the taxon obviously with additional material), and by Blanford (1876: 637). Smith (1935: 99) reported that the holotype of Leiurus berdmorei was lost. The reptile collection of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI; see Roonwal, 1963; Sewell, 1932 for, historical sketches of the institution), which has most of the types described by Edward Blyth (1810-1873), a former curator of the zoo­ logical museum of the Asiatic Society of Bengal at Calcutta, is an important repository of Asian zoological types. The microscopic examination of liver tissue obtained from envenomed animals showed variable histopathological changes being severely increased with the time interval of envenoming. The most obvious changes in the liver were acute cellular swelling, hydropic degeneration, congestion of central veins and portal blood ves- sels. Besides, extramedullary hematopoiesis and invaginations in nuclei of hepatic cells, with formation of intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions were observed.

We also aim to shed light on the harmless species that, although not a threat to human health, should still be considered medically relevant for their potential in therapeutic devel- opment. Included in our review is discussion of the many contributing factors that may cause error in epide- miological estimations and in the determination of medically significant scorpion species, and we provide suggestions for future scorpion research that will aid in overcoming these errors. 1. Its fauna is Cairo 11341 rich with numerous vertebrate and invertebrate species. The arachnids of this Egypt area are here studied for the first time. Specimens of five arachnid orders e-mail: [email protected] were collected during nine trips to different places in the area (June 1994 - November 2000). The collection contains 28 species of 16 families of Order Araneae, 1 species of family Phalangiidae of Order Opiliones, 2 species of family Olpiidae of Order Pseudoscorpiones, 4 species of 3 families of Order Solifugae, and 7 species of family Buthidae of Order Scorpiones.
