In this project, I analyze and contextualize representations of birthing, birthing assistants, and the medicalization of the female body in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Helene Böhlau’s Halbtier! (1899), Ilse Frapan’s Arbeit (1903), and Gabriele Reuter’s Das Tränenhaus (1908). Böhlau, Frapan, and Reuter wrote their novels at the cusp of a new approach to birthing, and their protagonists grapple with the transition from giving birth at home with minimal medical intervention to viewing birth as a pathological condition that requires support from medical personnel. By bringing together theoretical discourses on the body and on medicalization, I examine what effect the restructuring of birthing assistance, and later the development of the medical specialty of obstetrics, had on women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and how women perceived these changed birthing conditions. I argue that each of these literary works challenges the medical history narratives that have portrayed medical advances in obstetrics as a positive change for women across the world. Rather, these works take up questions of female agency and the human cost resulting from medical advancements. I identify the three authors’ preoccupation with unwed mothers’ birthing experiences and the socio-economic and ii moral factors that influence their patient care and access to health care as a crucial commonality between the works examined. The project begins with a historical overview of the medicalization of birthing in German-speaking countries and of the changing discourses about the female procreative body from the 1750s onwards. The subsequent three literature chapters focus on the portrayal of women’s perceptions of the birthing experience, the locales in which women give birth (i.e. birthing clinic, rural birthing house, or at home), and birthing assistants and their interactions with each other and with their female patients. This approach enables me to compare how perceptions of these themes were mediated and represented in literary texts by multiple women writers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.     Chapter 14 Modernities, Sciences, and Democracy Sandra Harding The “modern” in “modern science” is a relatively uninterrogated and untheorized concept within the sciences and in the philosophy, sociology, and history of science. This is so today at a time when other aspects of Western sciences have been fruit- fully explored in critical and illuminating ways (see Christensen and Hansen, Chap. 13; and Skovsmose, Chap. 15). In particular, the exceptionalism and triumphalism characteristic of Western attitudes toward our sciences have been explicitly criti- cized and purportedly abandoned by many of the scholars working in science studies fields. By exceptionalism is meant the belief that Western sciences alone among all human knowledge systems are capable of grasping reality in its own terms – that these alone have the resources to escape the human tendency to project onto nature cultural assumptions, fears, and desires. By triumphalism is meant the assumption that the history of science consists of a history of achievements – that this history has no significant downsides. According to this view, Hiroshima, environmental destruction, the alienation of labour, escalating global militarism, the increasing gap between the “haves” and the “have nots,” gender, race, and class inequalities – these and other undesirable social situations are all entirely consequences of social and political projects, to which the history of Western sciences makes no contribution. Such conventional Euro centric assumptions can no longer gather the support either in the West or elsewhere that they could once claim. In recent decades a huge amount of literature on modernity has emerged from the social sciences and humanities. Stimulated by the massive shifts in local and global social formations during the last half of the Twentieth Century, and by the post-modern response to such changes, social theorists, literary and other cultural critics, and, especially, historians have debated the uneven and complex origins, nature, and desirable futures of modernity, modernization, and modernism.

  • The Parish Rosseel Collection
    THE PARISH-ROSSEEL COLLECTION Mss. Coll. No. 5 38 linear ft. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE David Parish (1778-1826) arrived in America in late 1805. The owner of a successful banking and commission house in Antwerp, he came to this country as the American based partner in a profitable enterprise of shipping bullion from Spanish America to Europe. He directed this business from Philadelphia where he made a fortune estimated at one million dollars. Upon his arrival in America, David Parish visited Gouverneur Morris who had been a friend of David's father when Morris was United States Minister to France. In the spring of 1807, Morris visited Parish and told him of vast lands in northern New York and suggested that they would be a good investment. In the spring of 1808, with Joseph Rosseel as his land agent, David Parish began purchasing land in the North Country. One of his first purchases was 72,000 acres at one dollar and fifty cents per acre. He later added to this by purchasing large tracts of Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties. In 1804 there were only four families living in Ogdensburg. In 1809 David Parish bought the unsold portion (only thirty eight lots had been sold) of the village from Samuel Ogden for eight thousand dollars. Parish saw the possibility of turning Ogdensburg into a main forwarding station on the St. Lawrence River and he made efforts to create a large commercial center there. As a result of hard work on the part of Parish and Rosseel, the town grew considerably in the years before the War of 1812.
