This paper pulls from, and pushes upon my experiences, and attempts to roll-it-all-up into a practical guide-cone. Not only a theoretical series of “what ifs,” but also a helpful introduction to the book and to the flower, “seedsmanchap” (FW, 221.) with luck enhancing the experience of reading and the positive effects of cannabis. If you’re already bored, scroll to the bottom and follow some of the links. Finnegans Wake (FW) for me, serves up the perfect antidote for those who do not read much these days. FW is the book for you, today. Get stuck in, light up, lighten up, there’s no right or wrong way to speak it aloud just try and make it new, explore your accents, keep it fresh. Use it as a doorstop, just go get a copy and let it grow on you. In the post-truth era of corporate-state controlled news’ media outlets, we might all use a lil’ linguistic and semantical earthquake, to shake loose the lies and dislodge the tantalizing deceits, and to rattle the vacuous gossip columns to pieces. Finnegans Wake, mixed with cannabis is my best bet, my offering, for a universal toolkit to help break on through to the other side with enough laughs and some shrieks of joy to prevent you crying yourself to sleep in depression at the state of the planet. -

It will be argued that, aside from a philological interest, studying translators’ papers is crucial in reconstructing the prehistory and process of translations. It will also be argued that such a study is crucial in analysing and evaluating the factors that influence translations, including the roles of the people involved in the translation process. More specifically, applying to translators’ manuscripts the methods of enquiry developed by genetic criticism will be illustrated through a study of the available manuscripts pertaining to the Italian translation of Anthony Burgess’s libretto, Blooms of Dublin (1986). The aim of the study is to show the importance of developing a specific methodology for investigating the prehistory and process of translation. 1. Introduction 2 Jeremy Munday (2012, 2013) has recently called attention to the role that archival methodologies may play in widening the scope of descriptive translation studies. According to Munday (2013), this can be achieved by “combining analysis of the translated product with an investigation of the translation process” (p. 134). Translation-related draft manuscripts and papers appear to be particularly suited to the investigation of such a process because they are “interim products which offer crucial and more direct access to the creative process that is literary translation and provide written evidence of the translator’s decision-making” (Munday, 2013, p. -

ABSTRACT This thesis explores chapter II.ii of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake (1939)—commonly called “The Night Lessons”—and its peculiar use of the conventions of the textbook as a form. In the midst of the Wake’s abstraction, Joyce uses the textbook to undertake a rigorous exploration of epistemology and education. By looking at the specific expectations of and ambitions for textbooks in 19th century Irish national schools, this thesis aims to provide a more specific historical context for what textbooks might mean as they appear in Finnegans Wake. As instruments of cultural conditioning, Irish textbooks were fraught with tension arising from their investment in shaping religious and political identity. -

But, from several reports—via word-of-mouth and Lawrence’s continued live tweeting (#LuciaJoycePerspectives)— it seems to have been an excellent event, expertly organized by Genevieve Sartor. It was about time that Lucia had an occasion of her own, rather than being squeezed into events focusing on her father. “Finnegans Wake at 80” was, for me, a resounding success. Although I have not fully switched my allegiance from Team Ulysses to Team Wake, since the symposium, I have returned to Joyce’s 1939 master- piece with renewed vigor, inquisitiveness, and conviction. I consider the extent to which performances enact alternative readings of Finnegans Wake, challenging notions of competence and understanding; and by viewing performance as a form of writing I ask whether Joyce’s composition process can be remembered by its recomposition into new performances. These perspectives raise questions about authority and archivisation, and I argue that performances of Finnegans Wake challenge hierarchical and institutional forms of interpretation. By appropriating Joyce’s text through different methodologies of reading and writing I argue that these performances come into contact with a community of ghosts and traces which haunt its composition. In chapter one I argue that performance played an important role in the composition and early critical reception of Finnegans Wake and conduct an overview of various performances which challenge the notion of a ‘Joycean competence’ or encounter the text through radical recompositions of its material. -

There is a substantial body of scholarship comparing James Joyce's later work with branches of contemporary physics such as the relativity theories, quantum mechanics, and wave-particle duality. Most of these studies focus on Finnegans Wake1, since it contains numerous references to Albert Einstein and also embodies the space and time debate of the mid-1920s between Joyce, Wyndham Lewis and Ezra Pound. There is also a fair amount of scholarship on Ulysses and physics2, which tends to compare the novel's metaphysics with those of Einstein's theories or to address the scientific content of the “Ithaca” episode. -

A strange looking foreigner appears over the horizon. It is a Jute. He converses with a suspicious native Irelander: Mutt. Mutt’s exclamation ‘Meldundleize!’ is the first of many references to Isolde’s final aria, the Liebestod, from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, which begins: ‘Mild und leise...’ 4 ‘(Stoop) if you are abcedminded, to this claybook…’ 7:17 We are brought back abruptly to the present and to tales hinting at scandal. Gradually the wake scene re-emerges: ‘Anam muck an dhoul (soul to the devil)! Did ye drink me doornail!’ HCE (Mr Finnemore) is encouraged to lie easy. There’s nothing to be done about it – either the sin was committed or it wasn’t. Either way it was HCE who caused the hubbub in the first place. -

LANG N Earthly Powers, among the finishing touches Anthony Burgess puts I to his caricature of Joyce at middle age, we find a trace of an earlier portrait of the artist. Hearing thunder, Burgess's "Poor fearful Joyce" reverts to prayer: "0 blessed Sacred Heart of Jesus keep us from harm."1 In the "Circe" episode of Ulysses, Stephen Dedalus, "Choking withfright, remorse and horror," confronts his dead mother. 2 "0 Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on him!" moans the apparition: "Save him from hell, o divine Sacred Heart!" (U 582). The prayer recited by Burgess's Joyce in 1923 and that recited to Joyce's Stephen in 1904 both resemble the invocations in "The Litany of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,"3 which is contained in numerous prayerbooks and religious manuals, including Devotions to the Sacred Heart ofJesus, published in Dublin. 4 What makes this particular work significant is that, two pages before the Litany of the Sacred Heart, we discover the origin of the sentence which accounts for Stephen's famous assault upon the brothel chandelier, the sentence which leaves him "Translating his spiritual into physical rebellion."5 Preceding the Litany is "An Act of Reparation"- "For the innumerable Irreverences and grievous Offences, by which we and others have insulted the Heart ofJesus" (Dev 304-06). -
Shahrzad and the Persian Culture in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 3 No. 19; November 2013 Shahrzad and the Persian Culture in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake: A Chaotic “nightmaze” Dr. Leila Baradaran Jamili Department of English Literature Islamic Azad University Boroujerd Branch, Iran Abstract Novelists illustrate that linear assumptions persistently impinge upon their understandings of the cosmos. Whereas the nonlinear, disordered and dynamic system of chaos, or chaosmos and complexity theories can provide different perceptions, experiences, and interpretations that match the diversity of reading, as James Joyce believes, they cannot touch the Cartesian spring. Chaos, as a scientific, post-Einsteinian, theory unites science, literature, and culture by using modern and postmodern methods of interpretation. This paper discovers some proper links between cosmos and chaos in Joyce’s Finnegans Wake (1939), argues the existing systems of order versus disorder and the unpredictability of reality. Joyce visualizes a very chaotic system or “nightmaze” by constructing his major characters and mapping them in the world of literature through random acts of storytelling in various languages. He creates a world in which the invisible borders of reality and fantasy merge in an odd unpredictable relationship. In the chaosmos outlined by Joyce, he reveals that Shahrzad, the central character of The Thousand and One Nights, is trapped in an unsystematized chaotic “nightmaze” that instead paves the way to remap her identity and keep her alive not simply in the Persian literature but rather in the modern and postmodern world literature.
