We have arrived at Gaudete Sunday (Gaudete is the Latin word for “rejoice”), and the Scriptures take on a joyful tone as we continue our preparations for the feast of our Savior’s birth. Our Second Reading gives us cause for joy as St Paul reminds us, “The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all….” Then he gives us a prescription for maintaining this peace: “In everything, by prayer and petition, with thanks- giving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Paul’s COLLECTION FOR DEC. 9 instructions for obtaining peace come as an early REGULAR OFFERTORY Christmas gift. INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PATRICK? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the Catholic Church through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eu- charistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance enve- lopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their enve- lopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.

 RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure prepara- tion for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

 SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their

abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.

HOW TO REGISTER AT THE CATHEDRAL

To register as a parishioner of the Cathedral, please visit www.stpatricks.org/newcomers/register, or scan the QR code to the right, and complete the simple online form. Alternatively, paper regis- tration forms may be found at each of the entrances to the Cathedral.

WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS BANNS OF MARRIAGE

The following people recently joined our parish: Please keep the following couples in your prayers as they prepare for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony:

Spencer & Katherine Davis Hannah Hobson & Ryan Hennessy Wedding: January 19, 2019 Arthur & Ana Nelson Elizabeth Quinn Katherine Murphy & William Laurie Wedding: January 26, 2019 SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, December 16: St. Ado of Vienne—Bishop St. Ado was born into a noble family in Sens, France around the year 800. As a young child, he was sent to the Benedictine abbey of Ferrieres to receive his education. Despite numerous pressures to pursue a secular career, Ado renounced his inheritance and became a Benedictine monk at the monastery of Prum in Germany. As time passed, fellow monks became envious of his holiness, and they drove him out of the monastery. Ado spent the next two years in Rome before moving to Ravenna. While there, Ado penned a revised Roman Martyrology. Ado then traveled to Lyons where he served as a parish priest until being consecrated Archbishop of Vienne by Pope Nicholas I. During his time as archbishop, he worked tirelessly to reform the clergy of his diocese.

Monday, December 17: St. Jose Manyanet y Vives—Priest St. Jose Manyanet y Vives was born on January 7, 1833 in , . At five years of age, his mother dedicated Jose to the Virgin Mary. Jose entered the seminary at a young age, and was ordained a priest on April 9, 1859. Following ordination, he served as secretary to the Bishop of Urgell. Jose had a strong devotion to the , which inspired him to found the Congregation of the Sons of the Holy Family in 1864 and the Missionary Daughters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in 1874 to promote the Christian formation of families. He also wrote several works promoting devotion to the Holy Family. During his life, Jose founded numerous schools and religious centers. His most well-known effort is his support for the construction of the Basilica of La Sagrada Familia in , uniquely designed by the artist Antonio Gaudi, which is still being built to this day after numerous delays. Tuesday, December 18: St. Winebald—Abbot St. Winebald was born into a noble family in Wessex, England in 701. In the year 721, he traveled with his brother and father to Rome. While there, his father passed away. Winebald chose to live and study in that city, where he remained for several years. Winebald returned to England, but came back to Rome to pursue a monastic life. In 739, St. Boniface met Winebald and ordained him to the priesthood. He then sent Wine- bald to care for the missions in Germany and Bavaria. While in Germany, Winebald was joined by his brother, St. Willibald, in founding the monastery of Heidenheim under the rule of St. Benedict. He was also joined by his sister, St. Walburga, who was made abbess of a new convent in Heidenheim. Wednesday, December 19: Pope St. Anastasius I—Pope Pope St. Anastasius I was born in Rome sometime in the 300s, and was the son of Maximus. He was elected to the papacy on November 27, 399. During his brief reign, Anastasius spent significant time combating errors in the writings of Origen, at the encouragement of the Patriarch of Alexandria, The- ophilus. He called a council which agreed that the writings were indeed heterodox. Anastasius also worked to combat the Donatist heresy which was spreading in North Africa. He died on December 19, 401. St. Jerome described Anastasius as being “a man of great holiness who was rich in his poverty.”

Thursday, December 20: St. Dominic of Silos—Abbot St. Dominic was born in Cañas in Navarre, Spain around the year 1000. As a young boy, he tended the sheep. It was during this time that he felt called to the monastic life. Dominic joined the Monastery of San Millan de La Cogolla, and eventually was named abbot. King Garcia III of Navarre attempted to obtain the monastery’s land, to which Dominic refused. The king exiled Dominic from Navarre. Dominic soon found a new home at the Monastery of St. Sebastian in Silos, where he was welcomed by the king of Old Castile. He worked to reform this monastery, which had fallen into laxity. Following his death, the birth of St. Dominic of Guzman, founder of the Order of Preachers, was attributed to the intercession of St. Dominic of Silos. Friday, December 21: St. Peter Canisius—Confessor and Doctor Optional Memorial St. Peter Canisius was born in Holland on May 8, 1522. After obtaining his master’s degree from the University of Co- logne, he met St. Peter Faber and, at his encouragement, joined the Society of Jesus. As a young Jesuit, Peter wrote numer- ous works on theology and Church history. Following the Protestant Reformation, he was named as a delegate to the Council of Trent. Peter traveled to Germany where he helped lead the Counter-Reformation and implemented the decrees of the Council. At the request of King Ferdinand, Peter co-wrote a Catechism of Catholic doctrine that became so popular that it was translated into multiple languages. He worked to reform German universities and he regularly preached against the errors of Protestantism. Peter was later named a Doctor of the Church, and called “Second Apostle to Germany.”

Saturday, December 22: St. Chaeromon—Bishop and Martyr Very little is known about this early saint of the Catholic Church. He was born in Egypt and be- came a priest, and later was made Bishop of Nilopolis in Egypt. During the reign of the Emperor Trajanus Decius from 249-251, there were intense persecutions against Christians. Chaeromon, already advanced in age, was forced to flee into the Arabian Desert with various companions. These men were never seen or heard from again, and thus are regarded as martyrs by the Church.
