Mrs. Sue Aldrich Wagner Fred Clough President, Board of Directors from the director

Through the generosity of our Zoo friends and the dedicated work of our professional staff and volunteers, 2002 became a landmark year in the history of the Santa Barbara Zoo. Significant progress was made with both our facilities and our programs.

I appreciate the significant contributions of the Zoo’s volunteers and professional staff and the many friends who made our 2002 achievements possible. All of the Zoo’s progress and accomplishments are a direct reflection of the quality of the dedicated staff, the enthusiasm and commitment of the volunteers, and the generosity of friends and donors.

Richard Block CEO/Director california conservation condors & research In 1999, the Santa Barbara Zoo joined the efforts of the United States Fish & Wildlife The Santa Barbara Zoo’s conservation Service (USFWS) and the California Condor Recovery Team to save the California condor. Our efforts to assist with the protection and recovery of programs had great impact on guests, this local treasure have touched our volunteers and staff alike. staff, and volunteers in 2002. May Six Zoo Board members and staff joined in a condor release. Participants hiked into the Los Padres National Forest in Ventura to observe the release AC-9 (adult condor 9). The release was significant as AC-9 is the last condor that was captured from the wild to start the captive breeding program.

The Zoo hosted a meeting of the USWFS California Condor Recovery Team, a multi-agency cooperative program that includes the United States Forest Service, the , the , and the Peregrine Fund. The open sessions were held at the nearby Radisson Hotel, and the closed sessions were conducted in the Zoo’s Board Room.

June Two teams of Zoo employees traveled to Baja California to assist in the construction of holding pens at a new condor release site. The new release site will help restore condors to this part of their former native range from which they have been absent for more than 40 years. The Zoo also provided financial support and donated a water tank to this project.

August Zoo staff, architects, and Board members traveled to San Diego to meet with the Wild Animal Park’s exhibit design team. We learned about the essential elements of a condor habitat from the design team, including creating a very flexible exhibit that would meet the many conservation needs of the program. From this meeting, it was decided to include an “out-patient” facility on Santa Barbara Zoo grounds that could accommodate a sick or injured wild condor.

September The Zoo was formally invited to become a full participant in the California Condor Recovery Program. Commitment to the program includes the design and creation of only the second public exhibit of California condors in the world. The birds on exhibit will be part of the captive breeding program. channel island foxes

Husbandry The Zoo published the first animal husbandry manual for Channel Island foxes in 2002.The manual was based on the proceedings from the first Channel Island Fox Husbandry Workshop in 2001, which was sponsored and hosted by the Zoo. Copies were distributed to participants of the workshop, recovery program members, and other interested in exhibiting Channel Island foxes. Also, the Zoo formally took over responsibility for the Channel Island fox studbook and Population Management Plan with the approval of the AZA’s Small Canid Taxon Advisory Group.

Exhibit The Zoo submitted plans to the City of Santa Barbara for the renovation of the fox exhibit. Due to similar site requirements, the renovation of the exhibit will be carried out in conjunction with the construction of the California condor exhibit. animal inventory Breeding In April, two fox kits were born in the Zoo’s exhibit to a pair of wild- Males Females Unknowns Total caught animals from San Clemente Island. Many new animals were added to the Santa Barbara Zoo’s collection in 2002. In April, two male Channel Island fox kits were born to one of our breeding fox pairs. The white-handed gibbons welcomed the birth of a blond male named “Elliot” in October. Unlike many animal species in zoo conservation which color is an indication of gender, white-handed gibbons can be born either blond or dark regardless of their sex.

The Zoo continues to participate in American Zoo and Aquarium The Zoo also received many new animals from other institutions. A new Education Curator, Kirsten Friar, arrived in early January, infusing the department with creativity. Ms. Friar came to Santa Barbara from Zoo New England in Boston, MA. She has extensive experience in education programming, especially for early childhood, and in thematic interpretation.

In addition to this new arrival, the Education Department also welcomed a new Volunteer Coordinator, Dawn Marie Post. The formal program area was restructured to create a new Education Specialist instructor position. Creating a second instructor position allowed the department to reach more people by having one specialist focus on fee-based programs and one specialist focus on school programs. In 2002 our formal education programs served almost 750 students.

The Education Department’s traveling outreach program, Theater Gone Wild, experienced great success in its first full year of production. The new Director, E. Lewis, helped take the acting troupe to new heights. In addition to off-site and on-grounds shows, the troupe also began performing at private events and birthday parties.

In 2002, Zoo Camp was once again voted the number one camp in the Reader’s Poll of the Santa Barbara Independent. Completely new curriculum, improved check-in procedures, three camp intern positions, and another 2002 Education Program Participants new staff position, the Early Childhood Category Participants Education Specialist, all contributed to an Fee-based Workshops 429 outstanding year of Zoo Camp. In Zoo Snooze 361 addition to camp curriculum, Teacher Trainings 16 improvements were made to existing School Workshops 2,200 programs, including fee-based, school, and overnight programs. Speakers included Dr. Richard Carroll of the World Wildlife Fund and Dr. Mike Wallace of the California Condor Recovery Program. In house lectures with speakers such as Dr.Tara Stoinsky of Zoo Atlanta, Scott Shane of Woodland Park Zoo, and Alan Mootnik of Gibbon Conservation International were enjoyed by Zoo staff and volunteers.

A total of 528 volunteers logged in more than 15,789 hours of service in support of the Education Department and the rest of the Zoo in 2002..

Perhaps the year’s most significant achievement was the creation of a two-year Education Department master plan. A new mission statement and guiding principles were also created.

We are the Education Department of the Santa Barbara Zoo. We create outstanding experiences that inspire people to save the world. a new elephant yard looking ahead The Elephant Yard renovation project is new, but builds on the work accomplished in 2000 by renovation of the Elephant Barn. Expanding and improving the exhibit will enhance the lives of Santa Barbara’s two In 2003, the Santa Barbara Zoo will begin the largest residents, Sujatha & Little Mac. renovation of the Elephant Yard. The project will improve the lives of our elephants, facilitate the work of our staff, and enhance the Zoo experience for our guests.

The renovated yard will be 13,305 square feet when complete, almost triple its current size. The moat that surrounds the Elephant Yard will be removed, making it possible to leave the elephants outside on warm summer nights. Previously this has not been possible because elephants have poor night vision and they could have fallen into the moat.

We will also provide new and improved enrichment for the elephants. Elephants have been shown to have intelligence similar to that of five- year-olds humans and thus require constant enrichment for their psychological well-being. The improved yard will feature an enrichment wall where various “toys” can be presented to the elephants. The new yard will also feature a separate logging area where the elephants can move tree trunks and boulders for exercise.

We will increase the safety of the elephants and their keepers by creating a protected contact environment; the keepers will interact with the elephants from behind protective barriers. In a free contact environment, which we have now, the keepers may be in danger if the elephants become startled or move in an unexpected direction. While we have not had any significant injuries to our keeper staff, protected contact will help us to prevent possible future injuries and is recommended by the American Zoo and Aquarium Asociation.

The guest experience will also be improved by the renovation. The exhibit will provide enhanced viewing opportunities for guests at the exhibit and for the first time, guests will be able to see the elephants from the Zoo’s miniature train ride.

Additionally, all public pathways surrounding the elephant yard will be renovated. By reducing the grade surrounding the yard to 5%, the pathways will be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant and accessible to all of our guests.

The goal for landscaping the project is to create attractive, natural-looking plantings, representative of those in India, which will call to mind the elephants’native environment. Informational signage will be installed to make the landscape an educational experience as well as an aesthetic one.
