Reset Europe Vol.: 10 CULTURE REPORT PROGRESS EUROPE 2020 ‘Knowledge of society should be part of culture.’ Reset Europe Time for culture back the trust of Europe’s citizens and create a Europe to give Europe Europe’s existential values of human rights, multilatera new momentum? CULTURE REPORT PROGRESS EUROPE 2020 CULTURE REPORT PROGRESS EUROPE 2020 The image that Europe is currently presenting could hardly be more contradictory: isolationism, populism, scepticism about EU institutions are all mixed in with a newly blossoming euphoria about the European idea. Does Europe need a reset? At the moment it mainly needs a direction. In the face of democratic crises, climate change, structural change and the hate that exists in society, the people of Europe need new ways of solving pressing problems. Can culture help to win back the trust of Europe’s citizens and create a European public sphere? Can it generate more unity and defend Europe’s existential values of human rights, multilateralism, freedom of the press and opinion? The contributors to this Culture Report look for answers to these questions. Berlin photographer Edgar Zippel visits the border area between Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina and his photos reveal the traces of the destruction that was wrought by the Yugoslav civil war. Looking at the people, it feels as if the fighting has only just ended, and they have not shaken off the horror and trauma that it brought to their lives. Zippel comments: 'My photos document the destruction of this region and its people and remind us of a war that raged in the heart of Europe 20 years ago, but that is still far from over elsewhere in the world'. 33 Foreword hat defines Europe’s identity? fascism 4 (2015) 209-212 brill.com/fasc Book Review ∵ Mats Deland, Michael Minkenberg and Christin Mays, ed. In the Tracks of Breivik: Far Right Networks in Northern and Eastern Europe (Berlin/ Vienna: lit Verlag, 2014). Four years have already passed since Anders Behring Breivik, apparently single-handedly, committed the most murderous and destructive terrorist atrocity by the far right in post-war Europe. In 2011–2012, particularly during his criminal trial in Oslo, there was a lively public debate in in the Scandinavian media as to whether Breivik was a fascist, or represented some other permuta- tion of the contemporary European far right – an Islamophobic ‘counter-jihad- ist’; a militant, conservative nationalist; or a Christian extremist.1 Somewhat counterintuitively, since then relatively little scholarly attention has been devoted within comparative fascist studies to the implications of Breivik’s deeds, ideology, and self-proclaimed pan-European revolutionary movement. The title of this anthology – In the Tracks of Breivik – would suggest that its primary purpose is to map the far right networks of northern and eastern Europe in relation to the terrorist acts of July 22, 2011. Even if we realize that this formulation is an unfortunate literal translation of the Swedish phrase ‘i spåren av [Breivik]’ – for which a more idiomatic English rendering would be ‘in the wake of [Breivik]’, the implication would still be that the findings of the book are located in some direct relation to Breivik and his crimes. Even the promotional blurb on the back cover, as well as the opening and closing words of the introduction, reinforce this expectation.

  • Human Rights of Women Wearing the Veil in Western Europe
Human Rights of Women Wearing the Veil in Western Europe Research Paper I. Introduction The present paper analyses legislation, policies, and case-law surrounding religious attire in a number of countries in Western Europe and how they affect the human rights of women and girls who wear the veil in Western Europe. It also more broadly analyses discrimination and violence experienced by women wearing the veil in Europe learning from their own voice. Throughout the paper, the terminology ‘veil’ is used to refer to a variety of religious attire worn mostly, but not exclusively, by Muslim women. There are different types of clothing that cover the body. This research is focused on manifestations of veils that are the subject of regulation in several Western European Countries. They include the hijab (a piece of clothing that covers the head and neck, but not the face), niqab (a piece of clothing that covers the face, where only the eyes are visible), burqa (a piece of clothing that covers both the face and eyes), jilbab (a loose piece of clothing that covers the body from head to toe), or abaya, kaftan, kebaya (a loose, often black, full body cover overcoat). The head and body covers are often combined. In several countries, some of these clothing are based on traditional costumes rather than religion and are often worn by rural communities in the countries of origins. The paper also uses the terminology ‘full-face veil’ or ‘face-covering veil’ to refer to both niqab and burqa. Furthermore, it refers to burkini, a swimsuit that covers the body from head to ankles, completed by a dress.

  • Hogmanay Rituals: Scotland’S New Year’S Eve Celebrations
Accepted Manuscript of a book chapter published by Routledge Suggested citation: Frew, E. & Mair. J. (2014). Hogmanay Rituals: Scotland’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations. In Frost, W. & Laing, J. (Eds) Rituals and traditional events in the modern world. Routledge Hogmanay Rituals: Scotland’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations Elspeth A. Frew La Trobe University Judith Mair Department of Management Monash University ABSTRACT Hogmanay, which is the name given to New Year’s Eve in Scotland, is a long-standing festival with roots going far back into pagan times. However, such festivals are losing their traditions and are becoming almost generic public celebrations devoid of the original rites and rituals that originally made them unique. Using the framework of Falassi’s (1987) festival rites and rituals, this chapter utilises a duoethnographic approach to examine Hogmanay traditions in contemporary Scotland and the extent to which these have been transferred to another country. The chapter reflects on the traditions which have survived and those that have been consigned to history. Hogmanay and Paganism: Scotland’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations INTRODUCTION New Year’s Eve (or Hogmanay as it is known in Scotland) is celebrated in many countries around the world, and often takes the form of a public celebration with fireworks, music and a carnival atmosphere. However, Hogmanay itself is a long-standing festival in Scotland with roots going far back into pagan times. Some of the rites and rituals associated with Hogmanay are centuries old, and the tradition of celebrating New Year Eve (as Hogmanay) on a grander scale than Christmas has been a part of Scottish life for many hundreds of years.
