Local Expellee Monuments and the Contestation of German Postwar Memory
To Our Dead: Local Expellee Monuments and the Contestation of German Postwar Memory by Jeffrey P. Luppes A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Germanic Languages and Literatures) in The University of Michigan 2010 Doctoral Committee: Professor Andrei S. Markovits, Chair Professor Geoff Eley Associate Professor Julia C. Hell Associate Professor Johannes von Moltke © Jeffrey P. Luppes 2010 To My Parents ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Writing a dissertation is a long, arduous, and often lonely exercise. Fortunately, I have had unbelievable support from many people. First and foremost, I would like to thank my advisor and dissertation committee chair, Andrei S. Markovits. Andy has played the largest role in my development as a scholar. In fact, his seminal works on German politics, German history, collective memory, anti-Americanism, and sports influenced me intellectually even before I arrived in Ann Arbor. The opportunity to learn from and work with him was the main reason I wanted to attend the University of Michigan. The decision to come here has paid off immeasurably. Andy has always pushed me to do my best and has been a huge inspiration—both professionally and personally—from the start. His motivational skills and dedication to his students are unmatched. Twice, he gave me the opportunity to assist in the teaching of his very popular undergraduate course on sports and society. He was also always quick to provide recommendation letters and signatures for my many fellowship applications. Most importantly, Andy helped me rethink, re-work, and revise this dissertation at a crucial point. -

Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig 1587-1920
Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig 1587-1920 The making of modern Denmark The Duchy of Schleswig Hertugdømmet Slesvig Herzogthum Schleswig c. 1821 The President’s Display to The Royal Philatelic Society London 18th June 2015 Chris King RDP FRPSL 8th July 1587, Entire letter sent from Eckernförde to Stralsund. While there was no formal postal service at this time, the German Hanseatic towns had a messenger service from Hamburg via Lübeck, Rostock, Stettin, Danzig and Königsberg to Riga, and this may have been the service used to carry this letter. RPSL Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig 1587-1920 The Duchy of Schleswig: Background Speed/Kaerius, 1666-68, from “A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World” The Duchies of Slesvig (Schleswig in German) and Holstein were associated with the Danish Crown from the 15th century, until the Second Schleswig War of 1864 and the seizure by Prussia and Austria. From around 1830 sections of the population began to identify with German or Danish nationality and political movements followed. In Denmark, the National Liberal Party used the Schleswig question as part of their programme and demanded that the Duchy be incorporated in the Danish kingdom under the slogan “Denmark to the Eider". This caused a conflict between Denmark and the German states, which led to the Schleswig-Holstein Question of the 19th century. When the National Liberals came to power in Denmark, in 1848, it provoked an uprising of ethnic Germans who supported Schleswig's ties with Holstein. This led to the First Schleswig War. Denmark was victorious, although more through politics than strength of arms. -

At the Ambassadors Conference in London, Austro-Hungary argued that the involvement of Shkodra City was essential to the economy of the new Albanian state. Meanwhile Russia did not open the way for solving the Shkodra problem, Russian diplomats thought how to satisfy Serbia's ambitions in Northeast Albania, respectively in Kosovo Beyond those considerations of a political character, on 8 October 1912, was the youngest member of the Balkan Alliance, the Shkodra northern neighbor, Montenegro, that rushed to launch military actions, thus opening the first campaign of the First Balkan War. The Montenegrin military assault, as its main strategic objective in this war, was precisely the occupation and annexation of the historic city of Shkodra, a city with a big economic and cultural importance for the Albanian people and territory. -
The Socio-Political Meanings of the Conflict Between the Muslims and the Christians Around the Western Balkan in the 15Th Century
Athens Journal of History - Volume 3, Issue 4 – Pages 297-320 The Socio-political Meanings of the Conflict between the Muslims and the Christians around the Western Balkan in the 15th Century. Centering on the Heroic Kastrioti-Skanderbey of Albania By Jayoung Che Georgi Kastrioti-Skanderbey (1405-1468) is known as an Albanian hero. He led the resistance against the Ottomans during the period 1443-1468, and became a paragon of wonder among the western Christians. Skanderbey has been defined as a hero who resisted the Ottoman's attack not only for Albania but for the entire European Christian world, i.e. a symbol of the Albanian populace, Albanian racialism, and the last fighter for Albanian independence, a protector of European culture, a warrior of the Renaissance, and a protector of freedom against the Muslims. Furthermore, his resistance has been compared even with the Greek partisans ("klephtoi") who, gathered in the Mountain area, fought the Turks later under the Ottoman Sultan’s domination. According to another view, however, his resistance was regarded as standing for the interests of Albanian feudal lords. In my opinion, however, Skanderbey could neither be identified as a protector of Albanian racialism, nor a warrior of Christendom. It is chronologically preposterous to apply the concept of racialism or modern nationalism to the 15th century, the age of Skanderbey. Christendom as well as the feudal lords were never a unified entity, but were divided into several sects according to their own interests. Actually, aiming for his own freedom against the yoke of the Sultan, Skanderbey rose upon the militarism of the Western crusades which, not all but a part of the western feudal lords, as well as the Roman Popes, sought after. -

STATE, LAW, AND REVOLUTION: AGRARIAN POWER AND THE NATIONAL STATE IN ALBANIA, 1850-1945 by Besnik Pula A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Sociology) in the University of Michigan 2011 Doctoral Committee: Professor George P. Steinmetz, Chair Professor Howard A. Kimeldorf Professor Margaret R. Somers Professor Ronald Grigor Suny Professor Michael D. Kennedy, Brown University © Besnik Pula 2011 DEDICATION To my wife, Shpresa. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS As I ponder all the individuals that have had a role in making this dissertation see the light of day, I realize how difficult it is to properly recount the numerous ways and uncountable acts, large and small, with which others have shaped, supported, and directly or indirectly helped me arrive at this finished product. I was extremely fortunate to have had a group of exceptional historical social scientists as members of my committee, whose support carried me from my early days as a graduate student at Michigan through the years of research and writing of this dissertation. All these individuals have made tremendous efforts in giving me the best training a rookie graduate student in sociology can get. I can only hope to live up to the high standards they have set. My principal advisor, George Steinmetz, has played an enormous intellectual and mentoring role not only during the research and writing of this dissertation, but during my entire graduate career. George was patient enough to stick with me as I scrapped my original dissertation topic to end up working on the one here. -
Music and the Berlin Wall During the Cold War
Music and the Berlin Wall during the Cold War OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How did music help people resist what the Berlin Wall symbolized? OVERVIEW On September 1944, shortly after the Allied powers liberated Paris from the Nazis, representatives from the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union met in London to plan the future of a post-Hitler Germany. Together they drafted the London Protocol, which partitioned the country into four zones after the war. The western half of Germany would be split between Great Britain, France, and the United States, and the eastern half would be administered by the Soviet Union. The protocol also stipulated that Berlin, while geographically on the eastern side of the country, would also be partitioned, again with the U.S., Great Britain and France controlling the west side and the U.S.S.R. controlling the east side. After the war ended, the discussion of Germany’s future grew contentious. The Soviets wanted to keep it unarmed, while the Western powers felt reestablishing the German Army would restrain the Soviets from expanding into Western Europe. In 1946, the French, British, and American portions of Berlin unified into a single region. Fearing a concentrated Western influence deep in Soviet territory, the USSR attempted a blockade on all the rail and highway access to the western side of the city. In response, the American, British, and French alliance organized the Berlin Airlift, delivering supplies to the city by air. The Soviet blockade failed, and Berlin remained a divided city, insulated in East Germany. The Soviets were correct in their thinking that a “free” Berlin posed a threat to their influence. -

Abstract This paper will explore bilateral relations between Turkey and Albania during the post-Ottoman period. The aim of the paper is to explore reasons for the revival and establishment of relations since the creation of both nation states at the beginning of the twentieth century. In the 21st century, Turkish foreign policy shifts in the Balkans, along with the rise of the Turkish economy and military capability are in line with Albanian needs politically and economically. More importantly, the Turkey’s repeated assurances to protect the Albanian people has been paramount for Albanians who live in the five surrounding states, that is Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. Introduction This paper will explore bilateral relations between Turkey and Albania since the creation of the Albanian state in 1912. I examine the economic, security and geopolitical context of Albanian/Turkish interactions since the end of the Cold War. While Albanian foreign policies since the creation of the Albanian state until WWII1, communist era 2 , and the post cold war period 3 have been scrutinised by various 1 O.
