Jutland Remembered A Commemoration of the Centenary of The Battle of Jutland at St Michael & All Angels Church, Brooksby May 2016 In the 1920’s Earl Beatty erected a memorial in St Michael and All Angels Church at Brooksby in memory of the officers and men who lost their lives during the battle. The memorial is an elaborate wall monument and has the following inscription: IN MEMORY OF OUR FRIENDS OFFICERS AND MEN WHO DIED GLORIOUSLY FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE BATTLE OF JUTLAND 31 MAY 1916 THEY THAT GO DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS THAT DO BUSINESS IN GREAT WATERS THESE SEE THE WORKS OF THE LORD AND HIS WONDERS IN THE DEEP Here we give a short biography of the officers who lost their lives during the battle and whose names are inscribed on the memorial and a brief description of how their ships were lost. After the war the surviving officers of the Battlecruiser Fleet presented Admiral Beatty with an album containing pictures of themselves and their ships. This is kept in the Beatty family archive. Jutland Remembered Captain Arthur Lindesay Cay lost his life aged 48 in command of the battlecruiser HMS INVINCIBLE Arthur Lindesay Cay was born on 31st The Invincible was the lead British ship during the battle. At the short range of 9,000 yards she was targeted by the January 1869 in Penzance, Cornwall and German fleet, blown up and completely destroyed at 6.34pm on 31st May. The explosion engulfed the entire ship and she joined the Navy as a cadet in 1882. -

May 31, 1916, the Battle of Jutland (or Skagerrakschlact as it is krnwn •. to the Germans), was fought between the British Grand Fleet, under the command of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, and the German High Seas Fleet commanded by Admiral Reinhold Scheer. It was to be the largest nava~ bat tle and the only full.-scale clash between battleships of the war. The British Grand Fleet was com posed of 151 warships, among which were 28 bat:leships and nine battle cruisers, wiile the German High Seas Fleet consisted of 99 war ships, including 16 battleships and 54 battle cruisers. Contact between these mighty fleets was made shortly after 2pm, when HMS Galatea reported that she had sighted the enemy. The first British disaster occured at 4pm, when, while engaging SMS Von der Tann, HMS Indefatigable was hit by a salvo onherupperdeck. The amidships. As a story of pure gallantry, it may be, the Dispatches do not add to the information already accessible. But they correct many glaring current inaccuracies, based on irre- sponsible statements and incomplete knowledge. Above all, they present us for the first time with an authentic exposition of the purpose and tactics of the operations, and permit us to view their incidents in proper perspective. For the first time, too, we realize the magnitude of the design, its colossal intricacy, its patient weaving. Narratives of both Raids were issued through the Press Bureau on April 26 and May 15, 1918. Having regard to their medium of publication, but on that' ground alone, these articles, written by an exceedingly competent and well-informed journalist, may be described as official. -

A Royal Navy Monitor at Stavros. My grandfather, Charlie Burgoyne, was a stoker on the monitor, HMS M18. When I asked him the classic “what did you do in the war Grandad?” he told me that he had been at Gallipoli, and that it was horrible, so I never pursued the matter. After he died, I was given his naval service record, and I have recently discovered that he was based around Salonika and Stavros for almost three years after Gallipoli. I have been consulting the Ship’s Log at the National Archives to find out what his vessel was doing, and I also contacted Alan Wakefield at the Society. He suggested I prepared this note since there is very little written about the naval aspects of the Salonika campaign. Charlie was one of 6 children of George Burgoyne and his wife Lavinia; they lived in the South Devon village of Aveton Gifford. Two of the children had died in infancy, an elder brother was serving with the 2nd Devons, and the two sisters were “in service”. Charlie joined the Navy in January 1909, claiming to be 18 although we suspect he was still only 17. He served as a stoker but on the outbreak of hostilities he was posted to the oil-fired torpedo boat HMS TB5. She had originally been classed as a Torpedo Boat Destroyer but with the development of the larger Destroyer classes, which could sail with the fleet, they were downgraded to roles as Coastal Destroyers. Charlie spent about 6 months based at Immingham, patrolling each day off the mouth of the Humber, but saw no action. -

From the opening of the war the British Navy had been sustained by the hope that some day and somewhere they would meet the German High Sea Fleet in a battle in the open sea. It had been their hope since the hot August day when the great battleships dis appeared from the eyes of watchers on the English shores. It had comforted them in the long months of waiting amid the winds and snows of the northern seas. Since the be ginning of the year 1916 this hope had become a confident belief. There was no special ground for it, except the general one that as the case of Germany became more desperate she would be forced to use every asset in the struggle. As the onslaught on Verdun grew more costly and fruitless, and as the armies of Russia began to stir with the approach of (B780) summer, it seemed that the hour for the gambler's throw might soon arrive. The long vigil was trying to the nerve and temper of every sailor, and in especial to the Battle Cruiser Fleet, which represented the first line of British sea strength.
