May 31, 1916, the Battle of Jutland (or Skagerrakschlact as it is krnwn •. to the Germans), was fought between the British Grand Fleet, under the command of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, and the German High Seas Fleet commanded by Admiral Reinhold Scheer. It was to be the largest nava~ bat tle and the only full.-scale clash between battleships of the war. The British Grand Fleet was com posed of 151 warships, among which were 28 bat:leships and nine battle cruisers, wiile the German High Seas Fleet consisted of 99 war ships, including 16 battleships and 54 battle cruisers. Contact between these mighty fleets was made shortly after 2pm, when HMS Galatea reported that she had sighted the enemy. The first British disaster occured at 4pm, when, while engaging SMS Von der Tann, HMS Indefatigable was hit by a salvo onherupperdeck. The amidships. From the opening of the war the British Navy had been sustained by the hope that some day and somewhere they would meet the German High Sea Fleet in a battle in the open sea. It had been their hope since the hot August day when the great battleships dis appeared from the eyes of watchers on the English shores. It had comforted them in the long months of waiting amid the winds and snows of the northern seas. Since the be ginning of the year 1916 this hope had become a confident belief. There was no special ground for it, except the general one that as the case of Germany became more desperate she would be forced to use every asset in the struggle. As the onslaught on Verdun grew more costly and fruitless, and as the armies of Russia began to stir with the approach of (B780) summer, it seemed that the hour for the gambler's throw might soon arrive. The long vigil was trying to the nerve and temper of every sailor, and in especial to the Battle Cruiser Fleet, which represented the first line of British sea strength. -

Admiral Sir John Jellicoe Britain's "Future Nelson" - The Man and his Work What was it in Sir John's personality that marked him out for his great command? How came it that Lord Fisher, months before war was declared, could speak of him to the writer of these lines as "the future Nelson"? His selection has not been due to any external dominance of character. Indeed, the ordinary man - noting only the Commander-in-Chief's downward look, quick upward glance, and clear outward gaze - would not discern in him a man who was pre-destined for the greatest responsibility and command which any man could bear. On board his flagship the Iron Duke There have been chiefs who have won their way by some dominant force, and have strengthened their position and command by some stern or forbidding expression of character. That is not Jellicoe's way. So far as his great position depends upon personality - apart from the expression of personality in love for the service, and sleepless zeal in mastering its mysteries and in gaining confidence in every step that has led to command – his authority comes from a quality of calm persuasiveness, which makes him beloved and trusted by men in every rank and rating of the Service. His hold upon them is as Nelson’s hold was on the officers and men of the Fleet in his time. His officers are hid colleagues as well as his comrades. The Admiral is an assiduous worker, and is never so happy as when he can work some good for officers and men in the Service. -

It involved more ships than any previous naval battle. It also came at an awkward time in the development of power-driven warships. Their speed was much greater, but communication by radio was still in its infancy and radar had not been invented, while funnel smoke made communications by flags or light much more difficult. The potential for things to go wrong – always very great in sea battles – was greater than ever. There was, understandably, public disappointment with the result, but there is no doubt that it was fought with the highest courage and determination under the most difficult and challenging conditions. Whatever the judgement on the outcome, this commemoration of the centenary of the Battle is focused on the endurance and gallantry of all those who took part, on both sides, and particularly, on those who lost their lives. -

In May 1916, after sighting two enemy destroyers Admiral. In 1913 Burney took over command of the Second and Third approaching his ship, Alexander-Sinclair’s notifying signal brought fleets, which were to become the Channel Fleet on the outbreak of war in the Battle-Cruiser Fleet, and subsequently the whole Grand Fleet, 1914; Burney went, in this year, to the 1st battle squadron of the Grand into the battle of Jutland. Fleet, as second in command under Lord Jellicoe; he saw action at the battle of Jutland and was promoted admiral a few days after its close; 2. Sir Walter Henry Cowan, 1st Bt. 1871–1956 Burney joined the Board of Admiralty as a second sea lord in 1916. Rear-Admiral. With the littoral the likely center of future naval engagements, it is important to remember that the issues of today are not new. Admiral Roger Keyes of the Royal Navy also had to contend with operating in contested littoral zones protected by anti-access weapons. Keyes’ solution to this was the integration of the latest weapons and techniques to overcome enemy defenses. By doing so, Keyes was able to project power upon a region or protect sea lines of communication. This thesis will examine the naval career of Roger Keyes during and between the First and Second World Wars. It will discuss that, through wartime experience, Keyes was aware of the trends in naval operations which led him to modernize the Royal Navy. -

But miscommunication later Bank led Royal Navy commanders to assume that at most the Sunderland German I Reconnaissance Group battlecruisers—but not ENGLAND Kiel the enemy’s battle fleet—had sortied.
