ANNUAL REPORT | 2005 - 2006 C utting the

R ibbon BREAKING NEW GROUND October 2005 marked the beginning of a new era for the Harn Museum of Art. The Mary Ann Harn Cofrin Pavilion, a project that began in 2000 with a generous private gift from the Cofrin family that was matched with state funds, opened to the public with a series of parties and events befitting the grandness of the 18,000-square-foot addition. Members and friends enjoyed a special preview followed by a spectacular Museum Nights celebration and weekend public opening that included the sounds of the Chris McCarty Band; tours by Harn curators and educators; drawing and painting throughout the museum by student artists from UF and the School of Art and Art History; a Dance Alive performance at the Phillips Center inspired by works of Contemporary Art Gallery art in the Cofrin Pavilion; a book signing by Jerry The Cofrin Pavilion features a 7,600-square-foot gallery Uelsmann; and performances under the guidance of Curator of Contemporary Art by the UF MOD Project Kerry Oliver-Smith, who organized a star-filled lineup in Dancers, the Nuevo Mundo the premiere exhibition, American Matrix: Contemporary Quartet and Gainesville Directions for the Harn Museum Collection. Alexander Chamber Orchestra. A Calder, David Smith, , Roy Lichtenstein, membership campaign in , Sol LeWitt, Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman, the months leading up to the Felix-Gonzalez Torres and Alan Sekula were just a few of the Pavilion opening added 273 American artists whose works graced the Cofrin Pavilion’s members between October walls over the course of the two-part, year-long exhibition. and December 2005. Education Space for All

The Cofrin Pavilion houses two adjoining classrooms for an array of activities for all ages. Newly initiated studio classes instructed 92 students in topics ranging from drawing to watercolor to batik art. Other activities hosted in the classrooms included Tot Times, Family Days and an accompanying video series to American Matrix.

The Pavilion was also the main site of the Harn’s first Earth Day. Visitors enjoyed art-making activities in the classrooms and entertainment in the Pavilion Promenade ranging from dance performances to live music, while a Trashformations exhibit and information tables by community environmental groups were hosted in the Harn Galleria.

The Cofrin Pavilion not only provides a new gallery for the Harn’s contemporary collection, it offers the first Cultural Plaza eatery, the Camellia Court Café. Museum visitors can take a break for a meal or just coffee and dessert, and those attending a performance at neighboring Phillips Center for the Performing Arts enjoy pre-performance appetizers or beverages.

2 Outdoor Beautification

A new garden for outdoor sculpture and contemplative art enjoyment was created between the Cofrin Pavilion and original building. A generous naming gift in December 2005 established the Bob and Nancy Magoon Garden in honor of Sam and Bessie Proctor.

Caroline J. Rister, a Gainesville resident, Harn member, University of Florida alumna, retired teacher, avid gardener and volunteer, worked with crews from UF’s Physical Plant to remove 80 water lilies and lotus from her home water garden, including several rare and hybridized varieties, that she then transplanted into the reflecting pools on the Terrace and in the Magoon Garden, as well as the pond behind the Harn Museum.

In summer 2006, the blooming Magoon Garden was the site for Mike Tringalia’s marriage proposal to Michelle Austerman, both recent UF graduates. She said “yes.” (photo Bob Bird, UF News)

The arnH Museum and the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the Florida Museum of Natural History commissioned four mosaics for the Cofrin Pavilion Terrace through the State of Florida’s Art in State Buildings program. Artists Robert Stout and Stephanie Jurs of Italy’s Twin Dolphin Mosaics created Wings, Petals and Leaves (detail pictured below) and installed the work in April 2006.

New Beginnings

Completion of Pavilion construction gave staff time to begin renovations on the original Harn Museum building, including closing all of the galleries and administrative offices in May 2006 to begin a three-month renovation and refurbishment of the walls, floors, carpet and other furnishings of the 15-year-old Museum. The enormous feat included the removal of 619 works of art. Visitors enjoyed the Camellia Court Café and American Matrix in the Cofrin Pavilion during the renovation.

3 4 BUILDING BLOCKS

Acquisitions and thought-provoking exhibitions are among the building blocks of a successful museum, along with facilitating understanding through outreach, research, educational activities, traveling exhibitions, object loans and community participation.

American Matrix: Contemporary Directions for the Harn Museum Collection was not the only exhibition to provide visitors an exciting look at world-renowned artists. Toulouse-Lautrec: Artist of Montmartre featured the work of the great French printmaker who created scenes of Parisian nightlife that would later come to define the era and its famed cabaret, the Moulin Rouge. The Harn Museum was the first U.S. venue for El Anatsui: GAWU, which introduced audiences to an internationally recognized contemporary Ghanaian artist, El Anatsui, whose latest work presented a series of metal object sculptures made from found objects—food tins, aluminum roofing and bottle caps. Acclaimed artist and UF Adjunct Professor Arnold Mesches’ exhibition, It’s a Circus: New Paintings by Arnold Mesches, drew praise from scholars and visitors.

Chief Curator and Curator of Asian Art Charles Mason organized A Closer Look: Art and Museums with significant input and assistance from the Harn education department and six UF Museum Studies graduate students. The exhibition examined key issues museums face, including varying approaches to the collection, preservation and display of art.

Significant outgoing loans included the exhibition Jacques-Henri Lartigue: A Boy, A Camera, An Era, on display in the Louisiana Art and Science Museum, Baton Rouge, from June 13 to Sept. 30, 2005, and the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, from Sept. 26, 2005, to Jan. 27, 2006. Claude Monet’s Champ d’avoine left the Harn for the first time since gifted by Michael A. Singer in 1999 for inclusion in Claude Monet: Fields in Spring, an exhibition at the Staatsgalerie-Stuttgart in Germany from May 20 through Sept. 24, 2006.

6 - Dec Nov BUILDING BLOCKS Education

The education staff created a stimulating variety of learning opportunities for children, students and adults. Programs for children and families included 10 Family Days, 20 Tot Times, an Earth Day festival and Chinese New Year celebration. In support of educators, staff offered four educator workshops and a host of resources for students and teachers, along with a Summer Teacher Institute. Nearly 4,000 students participated in 165 tours.

Visitors experienced 17 Gallery Talks, four “My Favorite Things” Gallery Talks featuring local public figures, 12 lectures, two performances and a film series that correlated to the Toulouse- Lautrec exhibition.

Parisian Cabaret at the Harn was a unique collaboration that included an environmental performance by University of Florida’s School of Theatre and Dance depicting the singers, dancers and colorful characters of all types from the lively and rowdy cabaret life of Toulouse- Lautrec’s Paris.

Collaboration with other UF colleges and units is a continuing focus of the education staff. The Harn Eminent Scholar Lecture Series co-sponsored by the School of Art and Art History enjoyed a banner year of programs headlined by a lecture by Museum of (MoMA) Director Glenn Lowry, pictured top left (photo, Michael C. Weimar, The Gainesville Sun, front page article).

Other highlighted University collaborations occurred with the School of Architecture, Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, Society of Art History Graduates, International Center, UF Student Government, Center for Jewish Studies, Center for Asian Studies and Center for African Studies.

7 BUILDING BLOCKS Contemporary Curator of Contemporary Art: Kerry Oliver-Smith Highlighted Hammering Man at 2,938,405 stands 24-feet-high and represents the signature work of artist Jonathan Acquisitions Borofsky. The sculpture, an imposing and dynamic (full lists found on p. 11) figure of a man cut as a silhouette from corten steel, holds a hammer that he raises and lowers in the repetitive gestures of an industrial laborer, Jonathan Borofsky, paying tribute to the universal worker and American, born 1942 to those who still work with their hands in Hammering Man at 2,938,405, 1984 a mechanized world. Borofsky’s work is often inspired by Corten steel the world of memories and dreams that he uses to explore the 24 ft. x 11 ft. x 24 in., meaning of ordinary existence rather than the depths of the (731.5 x 335.3 x 61 cm.) Gift of the Martin Z. subconscious. Hammering Man was a gift from Miami’s Margulies Foundation Martin Z. Margulies, who also gifted 32 other pieces of 2005.16.1 photography and sculpture in 2005.

Asian Curator of Asian Art: Charles Mason Tantric Buddhism is a mystical form of Buddhism that recognizes many deities and paths to spiritual enlightenment. One important Tantric deity is Vajravarahi, a female manifestation of Buddha who represents transcendent wisdom. At the end of 2005 the Harn Museum acquired an exceptionally fine bronze sculpture of Vajravarahi that once belonged to a larger group of images created for the Densatil Monastery in Tibet during the 13th or early 14th century. The sculpture depicts Vajravarahi dancing energetically on the supine body of a sinner with one leg tucked beneath her body. Her raised right hand holds a blade for cutting through worldly illusions, while her left hand holds a skull cup symbolizing Artworks, opposite page, top to bottom: human mortality. In the crook of her left arm she balances a Somali people, Koranic Amulet (xirsi), 18th century skull-capped staff and she wears a garland of skulls around Silver, agate, amber, ivory, 9 1/2 in. her neck and on her crown. Perhaps the most intriguing (24.1 cm.), gift of Katheryne Loughran and John feature of the sculpture is the pig’s face that emerges from Loughran, President, Foundation for Cross Cultural Understanding, 2005.28.2 the right side of Vajravarahi’s head. The pig represents the delusion and ignorance that Vajravarahi overcomes Timothy H. O’Sullivan, American, c. 1840 - 1882 and is the source of her name, which translates from Black Cañon, Colorado River, From Camp 8, Looking Above, c. 1873, albumen print, 8 x 10 3/4 in. The necklace is fashioned with silver, amber, agate and ivory beads and has a tubular cylinder adorned with bells. The porte koran, with a cylinder that holds koranic script inserted by a holy man, was designed to serve as a woman’s necklace to both beautify and protect. The porte koran and other objects from Somalia in this collection form a significant part of a new collecting area of objects from northeast , including and Somalia.

Photography Curator of Photography: Thomas Southall This dramatic image of a small boat pulled to the banks of the desolate Colorado River landscape has become recognized as one of the masterpieces of 19th century photography. Timothy O’Sullivan was probably more concerned with survival than art when he made this photograph while working for a government-sponsored geologic survey of the West in the early 1870s. However, he saw the landscape in terms of forms and shapes by capturing the barren river canyons in a composition of bold dark planes flaming a starkly blank sky—made even more dramatic because the early wet-plate collodion photographic process could not easily record clouds. This stark simplicity further isolates and dwarfs the man and fragile boat conspicuously positioned to show the portable dark tent in which O’Sullivan had to prepare and develop his wet-plate glass negatives on the spot. The Melvin and Lorna Rubin Endowment for Photography Acquisitions made possible this important acquisition that now serves as a keystone in the Harn’s 19th-century photography holdings and a great compliment to the Harn’s 20th-century landscapes by Harry Callahan, Wynn Bullock, Edward Weston and others.

Modern Curator of Modern Art: Dulce Román Composition after Botticelli by Werner Drewes makes a significant contribution as a key example of early American abstract work. Drewes studied under Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky at the influential German art and architecture school Staatliches Bauhaus. After settling in in 1930, he became a founding member of the American Abstract Artists (AAA) Group in 1936. Much like fellow members of the AAA such as Carl Holty, Lyonel Feininger and Louise Nevelson, Drewes promoted abstract art at a time when the realism of American Scene painting and Regionalism prevailed. Composition after Botticelli bears striking similarities in various compositional elements to the Italian Renaissance master’s Three Miracles of St. Zenobius (1500-1510), such as the three main groupings of figures before a perspectival architectural study; the horse in the middle foreground; the view into a darkened room in the right background; and the stand of cypress trees in the middle distance.

9 BUILDING BLOCKS Outreach

Skilled professionals share knowledge and insight with diverse populations to increase art understanding, one of the building blocks to art appreciation.

In 2006 the Harn was invited to replicate a research study called Vital Visionaries that originated at Johns Hopkins Medical Center and Baltimore’s Visionary Art Museum and was funded through the national Society for Arts in Healthcare. The study investigated the attitudes of medical students toward older adults by pairing 15 senior citizens and 15 first or second-year medical students for multiple museum visits.
