Los robots en la sociedad del futuro Ariel Palazzesi Investigadores españoles han realizado un estudio sobre el impacto que tendrán los robots en la sociedad del futuro. Los resultados son inquietantes: según sus descubrimientos para el año 2020 los robots serán tan “inteligentes” y su interacción con los humanos será tan grande que existirá un desequilibrio tecnológico enorme entre quienes posean o no una estas herramientas. Hemos hablado hasta el cansancio sobre el papel que jugarán (o no) los robots en los conflictos bélicos del futuro. Pero, ¿cómo cambiaran la vida de cada uno de nosotros, en nuestro ámbito laboral o social? Afortunadamente, un equipo de investigadores españoles, liderados por Antonio López Peláez, se ha planteado esta cuestión, llegando a conclusiones sorprendentes sobre el impacto social que tendrá la robótica en las próximas décadas. Antonio López Peláez es un profesor de Sociología de la UNED, que ha entrevistado a expertos en robótica de todo el mundo para obtener un pronóstico de cómo cambiarán nuestra vida diaria los robots. Según la opinión de lo investigadores, en el año 2020 se producirá un punto de inflexión tecnológica, gracias al cual los robots “serán capaces de ver, actuar, hablar, dominar el lenguaje natural y ser más inteligentes. Entonces nuestra relación con ellos será más constante y más cercana”, dice López Peláez. Los autómatas dejarán de ser máquinas sofisticadas que llaman nuestra atención en exposiciones o series de TV para convertirse en herramientas cotidianas que nos ayudarán en las tareas más comunes. Según el investigador, los robots androides que construiremos a partir de ese año, contarán con funciones y niveles de inteligencia tales que se convertirán en compañeros para la especia humana. -

Bolden, Jr. Administrator National Aeronautics and Space Administration before the Subcommittee on Science and Space Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation U. S. Senate Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee, thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today to discuss the outlook for NASA’s human space flight program. This has been a remarkable year, as we have completed assembling and outfitting of the U.S. On-orbit Segment (USOS) of the International Space Station (ISS), allowing us to focus on full utilization of the Station’s research capabilities; taken key steps in moving forward into the future of exploration beyond Low-Earth Orbit (LEO); celebrated the 50 th anniversary of human spaceflight; and witnessed the successful conclusion of the historic Space Shuttle Program. We are also pleased with the progress our industry partners have made in developing an American capability to transport cargo and eventually astronauts to the ISS, and end the outsourcing of this work to foreign governments. More importantly, this will add a critical level of redundancy for transporting cargo and crew to the ISS. A robust transportation architecture is important to ensuring full utilization of this amazing research facility. Enabling commercial crew and cargo transportation systems in LEO allows NASA to focus on developing its own systems for sending astronauts on missions of exploration beyond LEO. This split between commercial and Government systems allows for a cost effective approach to promote a broad base for human exploration by the United States. -

Final Environmental Assessment for the Launch and Reentry of SpaceShipTwo Reusable Suborbital Rockets at the Mojave Air and Space Port May 2012 HQ-121575 DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION Federal Aviation Administration Office of Commercial Space Transportation; Finding of No Significant Impact AGENCY: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ACTION: Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) SUMMARY: The FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation (AST) prepared a Final Environmental Assessment (EA) in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, as amended (NEPA; 42 United States Code 4321 et seq.), Council on Environmental Quality NEPA implementing regulations (40 Code of Federal Regulations parts 1500 to 1508), and FAA Order 1050.1E, Change 1, Environmental Impacts: Policies and Procedures, to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of issuing experimental permits and/or launch licenses to operate SpaceShipTwo reusable suborbital rockets and WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft at the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California. After reviewing and analyzing currently available data and information on existing conditions and the potential impacts of the Proposed Action, the FAA has determined that issuing experimental permits and/or launch licenses to operate SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo at the Mojave Air and Space Port would not significantly impact the quality of the human environment. Therefore, preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement is not required, and the FAA is issuing this FONSI. The FAA made this determination in accordance with all applicable environmental laws. Future Space Launch Vehicles S. Krishnan Professor of Aerospace Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Madras Chennnai - 600 036, India (Written in 2001) Introduction Space technology plays a very substantial role in the economical growth and the national security needs of any country. Communications, remote sensing, weather forecasting, navigation, tracking and data relay, surveillance, reconnaissance, and early warning and missile defence are its dependent user-technologies. Undoubtedly, space technology has become the backbone of global information highway. In this technology, the two most important sub-technologies correspond to spacecraft and space launch vehicles. Spacecraft The term spacecraft is a general one. While the spacecraft that undertakes a deep space mission bears this general terminology, the one that orbits around a planet is also a spacecraft but called specifically a satellite more strictly an artificial satellite, moons around their planets being natural satellites. Cassini is an example for a spacecraft. This was developed under a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. Cassini spacecraft, launched in 1997, is continuing its journey to Saturn (about 1274 million km away from Earth), where it is scheduled to begin in July 2004, a four- year exploration of Saturn, its rings, atmosphere, and moons (18 in number). Cassini executed two gravity-assist flybys (or swingbys) of Venus one in April 1998 and one in June 1999 then a flyby of Earth in August 1999, and a flyby of Jupiter (about 629 million km away) in December 2000, see Fig. 1. We may note here with interest that ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) is thinking of a flyby mission of a spacecraft around Moon (about 0.38 million km away) by using its launch vehicle PSLV. -

Space technologies are on a continuous growth path and many new developments (related to flag-ship Space programmes like Galileo or Copernicus, and a long tail of other Space initiatives) need to be tested, demonstrated and validated before being accepted by the industry. Currently, these newly developed technologies are tested on the ground, using climatic chambers that simulate one, or a few, Space conditions. However, it remains difficult to simulate the integrated effect of all Space conditions. It’s even more difficult to have a human in the loop, which can help understand the interactions between the environment and the experiment. zero2infinity is developing a balloon-borne laboratory that provides cost effective access to Near Space. It’s an environmentally friendly solution that. In Europe there is an increasing demand of flight opportunities to test, validate, demonstrate and calibrate technologies, equipment and new concepts that need to increase their TRL. This is essential to retain the competitiveness of the European Space sector. -

(Astron) School of Engineering and Information Technology, University College, University of New South Wales, Australian Defence Force Academy January 2010 Abstract During the project Apollo moon landings of the mid 1970s the United States of America was the pre-eminent space faring nation followed closely by only the USSR. Since that time many other nations have realised the potential of spaceflight not only for immediate financial gain in areas such as communications and earth observation but also in the strategic areas of scientific discovery, industrial development and national prestige. Australia on the other hand has resolutely refused to participate by instituting its own space program. Successive Australian governments have preferred to obtain any required space hardware or services by purchasing off-the-shelf from foreign suppliers. This policy or attitude is a matter of frustration to those sections of the Australian technical community who believe that the nation should be participating in space technology. In particular the provision of an indigenous launch vehicle that would guarantee the nation independent access to the space frontier. It would therefore appear that any launch vehicle development in Australia will be left to non- government organisations to at least define the requirements for such a vehicle and to initiate development of long-lead items for such a project. It is therefore the aim of this thesis to attempt to define some of the requirements for a nascent Australian indigenous launch vehicle system. -

HISTORIC AMERICAN ENGINEERING RECORD SPACE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM, MOTOR VESSELS LIBERTY STAR & FREEDOM STAR HAER No. TX-116-M Location: Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center 2101 NASA Parkway Houston Harris County Texas Motor vessels Liberty Star and Freedom Star were docked at the Hangar AF Wharf in the Industrial Area of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS), located at latitude: 28.489342, longitude: -80.588955, during their period of performance with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). These coordinates were obtained on August 24, 2012, through Google Earth™. The coordinates’ datum are North American Datum 1983. Dates of Construction: Liberty Star was built in 1980 and Freedom Star was built in 1981 and delivered as UTC Liberty and UTC Freedom, respectively. Their corresponding name changes were effective in 1984.1 Architect/Engineer/ Builder: Architect: Rudolph F. Matzer and Associates, Jacksonville, Florida; Builder: Atlantic Marine Shipyard, Fort George Island, Florida. Original Owner and Use: Original Owner: United Space Boosters, Inc. (USBI) of Huntsville, Alabama, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (UTC) of Sunnyvale, California. Original Use: Recovery at sea and towback to Hangar AF of the expended Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs)2 and their associated flight hardware following launch. 1 For simplicity’s sake, the names Liberty Star and Freedom Star will be used throughout the document. 2 The SRBs, also referred to as the ‘booster stacks,’ were comprised of four reusable solid rocket motor case segments joined to reusable solid rocket booster forward skirt and aft skirt assemblies. Each SRB also had three main parachutes, one drogue parachute, and one pilot parachute.
