Ključne riječi: društvene mreže, kvaliteta života, slobodno vrijeme, učenici višeg sekundarnog obrazovanja ABSTRACT (STRUCTURED) The title of this thesis contains terms whose importance and complexity necessitated their critical interpretation and analysis of their theoretical sources. This has been accompanied by an empirical study. Leisure time is not a homogenous behavioural category and there is little consistency in its categorization and definition (Godbey, 2003; Previšić, 2000). However, despite the lack of precision in these numerous definitions, they all concur that the term ‘leisure time’ indicates the time that remains after all obligations have been completed, and that there are various options for spending that time and various influences affecting how it is spent. During our leisure time we engage in activities that we choose ourselves, which are optional, and exclude time spent in school, time spent doing household chores and time spent at work (Byrne, Nixon, Mayock and Whyte, 2006; Previšić, 2000). The features of leisure time and characteristics of adolescents imply their manifold mutual interactions, and for this reason leisure time as an everyday phenomenon is often examined through its correlation with adolescents (Ilišin, 2007). The importance of leisure time for the development of children and adolescents is becoming increasingly evident due to the possibilities for socialization and interactions offered by leisure-time activities. More than any other age group, young people are susceptible to trends (Roberts, 1997), and thus they rapidly accepted the Internet and online social networks and integrated them into all segments of their lives, which also implies the majority of their leisure time. This modern- day phenomenon has changed the mode of communication within all factors of socialization, and the entire culture of leisure activities (Tapscott, 2008). The quality of life of adolescent population is a very complex phenomenon, which can be analysed from various points of view. It consists of numerous and diverse specific features that pertain to various fields of life. The quality of life is determined by certain external factors (economical, physical, environmental, safety-related), the community’s social organization, affiliation with a social group, and a number of other circumstances (Bouillet, 2006). Current research into the quality of life encompasses a wide range of disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, economics, politics, marketing, physical planning and medical sciences, but there is still no consensus regarding its precise pedagogical definition. Research into adolescents’ leisure time and their quality of life carried out to date has demonstrated that leisure time has crucial importance for the development of young people, who construct their own identities (Larsen, McGraw and Cacioppo, 2001) and their own life styles (Caldwell, Baldwin, Walls and Smith, 2004) in their leisure time, sometimes going beyond the boundaries of conventional society. From this it follows that leisure time is vital to the

Similarly, few studies have examined how economic determinants have evolved over the past several decades, even as the Korean social and socioeconomic structure has undergone substantial transformation. METHODS This paper examines changes over time in the determinants of marriage formation in Korea, using employment history data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) on three cohorts of young adults born in the 1950s‒1970s.

Gyeonggi Research Institute Policy Study 2019-73 Analysis of the Effects of the Youth Basic Income Policy in Gyeonggi Province: Comparison of the Ex-Ante and Ex-Post Survey Yoo, Young Seong et al. Gyeonggi Research Institute Gyeonggi Research Institute Policy Study 2019-73 Analysis of the Effects of the Youth Basic Income Policy in Gyeonggi Province: Comparison of the Ex-Ante and Ex-Post Survey Yoo, Young Seong et al. Gyeonggi Research Institute Preface Gyeonggi Province has been implementing the Youth Basic Income (“YBI”) policy since April 1, 2019. Under this policy, every 24-year-old person who has lived in Gyeonggi Province with resident registration for at least three consecutive years or ten years in total is paid KRW 250,000 every quarter, or up to KRW 1 million a year, in local currency. Currently, the population of Gyeonggi Province is well over 13 million, and around 175,000 youths (aged 24) are eligible for the Gyeonggi Province YBI. Unlike Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD), which is paid from the revenue the State generates from its oil, this project is financed by the Gyeonggi Province government, with the budget estimated at around KRW 175 billion annually. Not surprisingly, the YBI project has been attracting a great deal of attention. Questions have been raised whether the project is having the intended effect. Against this backdrop, the Gyeonggi Research Institute (GRI) conducted a study to measure the policy effects of Gyeonggi Province YBI. The group of beneficiaries was compared with a control group, and both groups were surveyed before and after the implementation of the YBI project to enable comparison between the ex-ante and ex-post survey results.

  • 'Hell Joseon' Is More Like It As Economy Flounders
LUND UNIVERSITY • CENTRE FOR EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIAN STUDIES ‘Hell Joseon’ - Tales from a South Korean Youth Trapped Between Past and Present Author: Johan Cornelis Schoonhoven Supervisor: Erik Mobrand Master’s Programme in Asian Studies Spring semester 2017 Abstract This thesis takes its outset in the newly coined expression ‘Hell Joseon’ used by the youth in South Korea. ‘Hell Joseon’ is a comparison between today’s society and the pre-modern Joseon Dynasty. By asking “what are the main characteristics of life in ‘Hell Joseon’ from a youth perspective?”, I arrive at the following conclusion. Life in ‘Hell Joseon’ is highly characterized by discrepancies between rich and poor, old and young, men and women, global and local. This is a peculiar result of Korea’s double-compressed modernity which derives from a colonial legacy, top-down modernization in the post-war era and condensed transition to a neoliberal world economy, also known as the second modernity. Therefore, traditional and (post)modern elements coexist in Korea’s society, and is partly the reason why the youth are now drawing references to the pre-modern Joseon Dynasty. Life in ‘Hell Joseon’ thus implies frustrations over high unemployment rates, a new ‘spoon class’ class division, lack of social mobility, an education fever and a downright “gender war”. More than that, it shows traces of apathy in the fact that the young generation is giving up marriage, children, jobs, hope, housing etc., but also traces of transformation since the ‘Hell Joseon’ discourse have made the youth take it to the streets, last seen in the mass demonstrations against now impeached President Park Geun-hye.

Since explicitly mentioning a potential tax increase triggers considerations about the costs, as well as the benefits, of welfare expansion, it is assumed that tax perceptions have an effect on welfare preferences.

The Social Life of Human Capital: The Rise of Social Economy, Entrepreneurial Subject, and Neosocial Government in South Korea Seung-Cheol Lee Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Science COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Seung-Cheol Lee All Right Reserved ABSTRACT THE SOCIAL LIFE OF HUMAN CAPITAL: THE RISE OF SOCIAL ECONOMY, ENTREPRENEURIAL SUBJECT, AND NEOSOCIAL GOVERNMENT IN SOUTH KOREA SEUNG-CHEOL LEE This dissertation explores the rise of social economy in South Korea, in order to understand the transformations of sociality, ethicality, and subjectivity in the contemporary capitalism. In the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis, we have witnessed “the return of the social” through introduction of various socio-economic projects—such as social economy, social innovation, and social entrepreneurship—that aim to graft morality and sociality onto the market. In the last decade, South Korea’s social economy sector has also grown quickly with the active support and promotion by the government, representing a new model of development as well as a feasible solution to reproduction crisis. This rapid growth has generated public and academic debates over whether the returned “socials” are the seeds of post-neoliberalism or just an ideological cloak for the expansion of market rationality. Based on ethnographic research on the social economy sector in Seoul, this dissertation focuses on an often-neglected question in these debates: what forms of the social

EXPLORING A TRADITION IDENTITY: GWANGDAEJEON IN JEONJU, AN INNOVATIVE STRATEGY IN PANSORI POPULARIZATION A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN MUSIC AUGUST 2017 By Hae In Lee Thesis Committee: Byong Won Lee, Chairperson Frederick Lau Young-A Park ABSTRACT Gwangdaejeon (Battle of the Clowns) was a local North Jeolla province television show that premiered in 2012 and ended in 2015, with later seasons being broadcast throughout Korea. This program’s motto was to revive the traditional pansori stage which thrived around Jeonju, the state capital of the North Jeolla province. The show was filmed in hanok (traditional Korean house) village, a historical recreation of a traditional house town in Jeonju. Gwangdaejeon was a competition for the master pansori singers, myeongchang. Gwangdaejeon follows the structure of reality popular song competition programs, which are already familiar to the public. These programs are categorized into two types: amateur and professional competitions. The former centers on auditions for novices who want to become stars, for example, Superstar K. The latter are competitions, such as I am a Singer, exclusively feature professional experts. Gwangdaejeon was similar to I am a Singer, but for myeongchang. This thesis explores the ways a television show contributes to the promotion of Korean traditional music. While Korean pop culture, such as K-pop and TV dramas, are gaining huge popularity all over the world, pansori, an example of Korean traditional vocal music, is disregarded by the majority of Koreans even though it has cultural value.

  • The Millennial Generation's Plight in Contemporary South Korea
Lund University Department of Sociology Bachelor of Science in Development Studies “Stuck in Hel Joseon” The millennial generation’s plight in contemporary South Korea Ella Holttinen Bachelor Thesis: UTVK03 15 hp Spring Semester 2020 Supervisor: Axel Fredholm Abstract South Korea is well known for its development miracle: the nation has managed to develop from the state of extreme poverty to the World´s 12th largest economies in a period of five decades. However, the negative consequences and side effects of this rapid growth, and issues of the contemporary Korean society has been less discussed, especially from the perspective of the Korean youth. The millennial generation in South Korea is living in a society, which has been drastically shaped by neoliberal policies and globalization. Combining these features with values and ideals of local culture and Confucian heritage, contemporary Korean society is full of complexities. Based on the media coverage on the current social issues related to contemporary South Korea, there are indicators that the Korean millennials feel “trapped” between the past and present, forced to deal with the expectations of their parents’ generation, and the grim reality of competitive and hierarchical society, where hard work will no longer guarantee upward social mobility and social security. From these premises, an expression ‘Hel Joseon’ has emerged among the Korean youth. ‘Hel Joseon’ is a comparison between the modern society of today and the pre-modern Joseon Dynasty, and the term entails, that South Korea is hellish hopeless society. ‘Hel Joseon’ expresses frustration that stems from economic inequality, unemployment despite having a degree from a top university, the hierarchical class system, excessive working time, and alienation from a society that only works for vested interests.
