VCAL NEWS VET Health Year 12 VCAL students are continuing with the Certificate II VET Health Support Services run at the school by Antrick Education. Dimity Leech (Lead Trainer/Assessor) has been attending every fortnight as students work through the outcomes. There have been a range of hands-on activities to equip students with the necessary skills to work in the Health industry. This program will continue for the remainder of the year.

ANZAC morning at Kalkee On Wednesday, April 24th a group of Year 11 VCAL students participated in an ANZAC morning at Kalkee Murray. Students read poems and short stories reflecting on times of war. Residents shared memories of war and the impact it had on Geelong and . Following this, students, staff and residents joined in with singing songs from the war era. This was an engaging morning for the students listening to the residents talk about growing up with war and the hardships and friendships and values forged during this time. Well done to the students for your preparation for the morning and representing the school in a respectful manner.

Literacy at Waurn Ponds On Thursday, April 4th all VCAL students headed out to Readings Cinema at Waurn Ponds to watch a movie for Literacy outcomes. Students had a choice of movie, US or Shazam. At the end of the movie students completed a success criteria work task around the plot and characters in the movie. Feedback from students was it was a different experience going into the movie knowing they were required to analyse the plot and characters. They said that having this perspective made them more engaged and able to elucidate important factors as the movie plot unfolded. Students will continue working on Writing and Reading for Knowledge as a focus in term two. Thank you to Mrs Shaw for organising the day.

YEAR 7 SO FAR So far in Year 7 we’ve done many educational things and also events such as swimming sports, camp, athletics and so much more. During swim sports and athletics many year 7 students from gold participated and showed great athleticism and confidence, and even competed in higher age groups. The school will then redeem these stick- ers for science, technology, maths, art and sports equipment.

Thank you for your support.

7N Reflection: Belmont High is a great school and I'm so happy that I am here. Already I have had some amazing experiences that I will remember for a while. One of these experiences was camp. Camp was a great bonding experience for the class and we all had a wonderful time. I got really close with people who I wouldn't necessarily think I would become friends with. Another great experience was the Athletics Carnival. It was a lot of fun and again I got a lot closer with my friends. I also think that being in the classroom is really good. The teachers are always pushing us to be our best and to always have an inquisitive mind. So far my experience at Belmont has been great. Gabby Hay

ANZAC SERVICES The school’s ANZAC spirit was on display at two locations last Thursday. Many thanks to the staff and students who participated in the annual march through Geelong including the School Captains, who carried the Rats of Tobruk Banner, the School band and Ms Rose Humphrey and other students marching who were accompanied by Ms Erin Prendergast and Ms Donna Matthews. Ernie Brough, the last surviving member of the Geelong branch of the Rats of Tobruk, was overjoyed to see the staff and students again.

Many thanks also to our Junior School captains, Sam Jansen and Elsa Lamb, who accompanied me to the annual ANZAC Day St. Joseph’s vs South Barwon football match, where they laid a wreath on behalf of the school. I was thrilled to be invited to be the guest speaker before the game and was honoured to also toss the coin.

This week we held the annual ANZAC service at general assembly. Unfortunately Ern was unable to attend due to poor health and our thoughts are with him. The Geelong branch of the Rats of Tobruk Association was represented by Shirley Drayton and Shirley and Geoff Wild. The 4 school captains read poems and led the minute’s silence after the magnificent playing of “The last post” by Oscar Hudson. All students were incredibly respectful during the entire assembly and it is great to see that the solemnity of the occasion was acknowledged and that our young people will continue to uphold the traditions and spirit of ANZAC into the future.

Craig White Rats of Tobruk Coordinator

SCHOOL ZONES As you may be aware the FindMySchool website has been launched (findmyschool.vic.gov.au). The website displays the current zones for Oberon High, Belmont High and Grovedale College and not the future zones.

I would like to assure you that Year 7 enrolment options for 2020 are the same as 2019 and students will be able to either:  enrol in Year 7 at Oberon High School and remain at the school when it relocates to the new Armstrong Creek site; or  enrol in Year 7 at either Belmont High School or Grovedale College if that school will become their future zoned school when the new secondary school at Armstrong Creek opens.

Maps for future zones can be located at- https://www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au/schools/Pages/ArmstrongCreekSecondaryCollege.aspx

The find my school website will be updated at the commencement of 2020 to reflect the future zones for 2021

If you would like further information please contact the South Western Region on 1300 333 232 or email: [email protected]

OPEN NIGHT 2019 I would like to take this opportunity to formally thank all of the students involved in the Open Night last term. This event showcases both the brilliant work our staff put into our programs, as well as the wonderful school community we have. No-one can say it better than our students that live it every day! We had our largest number of student volunteers as tour guides, cooks, food servers and teacher helpers around the school. All volunteers will be presented with a certificate of appreciation at their next House Assembly.

NAPLAN 2019 The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will take place on 14th, 15th and 16th May. Students in Year 7 and 9 at Belmont High School will complete paper tests over these 3 days. Please refer to the parent information pamphlet in this newsletter for information on the tests and how you can support your child. Parents with any questions or concerns are welcome to contact me via phone or email. The school is able to use the data collected through NAPLAN to monitor the literacy and numeracy progress of our students. NAPLAN is not the only method we use to do this and whilst we do not encourage excessive preparation for these tests, we do urge our students to try their best so that the data can be as accurate as possible. We also request that families do not organise appointments during this time to avoid disruption.

Congratulations to Abbey Hunt, Abbie Burton, Mia Sharp, Jack Hudson, Oscar Hudson, Jimmy Hudson, Alistair Breakey, Claire Breakey, Ewan Breakey, Emily Davidson, Jarred Pagels, Callum Marriott, Cas- sidy Sapwell, Sam Bridges, Asha James, Olivia Eskrigge, Zac Briffa, Noah Steinwedel, Grace Brown, and Dani- ka Davis for their time, energy and commitment. A special mention to Liam Sharp, who has been a driving force behind the formation of the ANZAC Band since the beginning, and to his mum Jessica, who has taken such great pho- tos for us every year!

Many thanks to Ryan Fehling for making time to support during the trip, much appreciated!

The Intermediate Band is participating in a combined schools concert band workshop and concert on May 28th. This is a great chance for our students to work with students from other schools across the region, and to be mentored by a high profile band conductor. Many thanks to Amanda Linton for making this happen for our students.

SAVE THE DATE! As outlined in student practice journals, we have our Solo night on June 4th, at 7pm in Band room 1 and the PAC. This is a compulsory performance for all instrumental music students enrolled in the ensemble program, and is an important part of the Public Performance Common Assessment task for Term 2. Parents and friends are welcome to attend this event to celebrate their child’s progress.

This term we welcome Kristy Vale as our new piano teacher. Places are still available for Piano, Voice, Guitar and Drumkit lessons, please see Ms Humphrey in the bandroom for application forms.

A final call out to followers of Alby Jay, that their performance in Geelong’s After Dark festival is this Friday night, at the Workers Club. Come along and support our BHS musicians Jarred Pagels, Callum Marriott, Jeb Costin and Tommy Dogget-Williams, as they’re sure to give the crowds a great performance.
