The Power of the Chinese Brush Concentration Paper Fall Term 1980 Richard M. Ambrose Poetry, prose, calligraphy and painting have long been regarded as the major arts of Chinese civilization. While each art form can be considered separately, there is a fundamental relationship which exists between them. Each form employs the Chinese brush and ink. One cannot over-emphasize the important role of the brush in the history of Chinese paintings. Each brushstroke that is applied reveals the touch of the artist and has a character of its own. Whether thick or thin; straight or curved, short or long, the combination of strokes establishes shapes. Each shape has its own characteristics: breadth, height, contraction, density, emptiness and balance. The interaction of strokes and voids (negative space) within the painting, creates a tension which must be held in equilibrium. The Chinese brush is the end as well as the means. The brush was more than just a tool. It provided a means for the revelation of the idea behind the images. The two concepts of technique and idea were in fact, one and the same. Therefore, the brush is not only the vehicle but also the soul of the artist. The visual qualiti_fts behind Chinese painting are frequently misunderstood. This may be due in part to the application of western definitions to Chinese art. To understand the Chinese artist's intentions, one must understand his existence within the realm of Chinese culture. For instance it has been said that the Chinese way of looking at life was not through religion, philosophy, or science, but primarily through the arts. -

Towards Chinese Calligraphy Qian Zhuzhong and Fang Desheng I. History of Chinese Calligraphy: A Brief Overview Chinese calligraphy, like script itself, began with hieroglyphs and, over time, has developed various styles and schools, constituting an important part of the national cultural heritage. Chinese scripts are generally divided into five categories: Seal script, Clerical (or Official) script, Regular script, Running script, and Cursive script. What follows is a brief introduction of the evolution of Chinese calligraphy. A. From Prehistory to Xia Dynasty (ca. 16 century B.C.) The art of calligraphy began with the creation of Chinese characters. Without modern technology in ancient times, “Sound couldn’t travel to another place and couldn’t remain, so writings came into being to act as the track of meaning and sound.”1 However, instead of characters, the first calligraphy works were picture-like symbols. These symbols first appeared on ceramic vessels and only showed ambiguous con- cepts without clear meanings. -

Tradition and Transformation: Cataloguing Chinese Art in the Middle and Late Imperial Eras Abstract After obtaining sovereignty, a new emperor of China often gathers the imperial collections of previous dynasties and uses them as evidence of the legitimacy of the new regime. Some emperors go further, commissioning the compilation projects of bibliographies of books and catalogues of artistic works in their imperial collections not only as inventories but also for proclaiming their imperial power. The imperial collections of art symbolize political and cultural predominance, present contemporary attitudes toward art and connoisseurship, and reflect emperors’ personal taste for art. The attempt of this research project is to explore the practice of art cataloguing during two of the most important reign periods in imperial China: Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty (r. 1101-1125) and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (r. 1736-1795). Through examining the format and content of the selected painting, calligraphy, and bronze catalogues compiled by both emperors, features of each catalogue reveal the development of cataloguing imperial artistic collections. -

I believed her then and since, I have enjoyed pursuing that goal. She taught me the basics of seeing lines in nature; lines formed on the contact of shadow and light, as well as organic shapes. We also practiced blind contour drawing1. I took this exercise very seriously then, and I have reflected upon these moments of observation as I write this paper. -

Chinese painter and calligrapher. He is designated one of the Four Masters of the Yuan (1279–1368), with HUANG GONGWANG, WU ZHEN and WANG MENG. Ni Zan’s family were of Xixia (Tangut) origin. His tenth-generation ancestor Shi came to China as Xixia ambassador in 1034–7 at the time of Emperor Renzong (reg 1023–63), and the family settled in Duliang (modern Anhui Province). In 1127–30, under Emperor Gaozong (reg 1127–62), Ni Zan’s fifth-generation ancestor Yi moved south with the Southern Song (1127–1279), settling at Zhituo village in Wuxi, modern Jiangsu Province, where the Ni family prospered. Ni Zan and his elder brother Ying were the sons of a concubine, Yan. Their father died when they were young, and they were raised by their eldest half-brother, Ni Zhaogui (1279–1328). Ying was mentally incompetent, and after Zhaogui’s death Ni Zan assumed responsibility for the family estate, a role ill-suited to his natural inclinations. He led a privileged and secluded home life for 20 or more years; in the mid-1340s he spent most of his time among rare books, antique paintings, calligraphy and flowers in his favourite studio, the Qingbi ge (‘Pure and secluded pavilion’). Ni Zan was an ardent admirer of the great Northern Song (1127–1279) artist and connoisseur, MI FU, and shared two of his idiosyncrasies: fastidiousness and generosity. -

Abstract: Chinese painting has own a unique national style over several years development, and it has been an artistic achievement with rich cultural connotations. Starting from the analysis of the role of Chinese painting in art teaching, this paper elaborates the importance of Chinese painting in various aspects, points out the misunderstandings and problems existing in the current art teaching, and finally puts forward corresponding countermeasures, which will play a certain role in the development of Chinese painting teaching in art education. 1. Research Background 1.1 Literature review In the course of high school art, the teacher guides the students step by step to understand the concept of Chinese painting and its expression methods and characteristics according to the corresponding teaching materials, which is conducive to the students' inheritance of national culture and self-improvement of spiritual realm and personal ability (Yang, 2012). In addition to translating and explicating the poems on the screen, through a close examination of both the form and content of the work I explore how it reflects Jung’s values, intentions, and background. -

Zen as a Creative Agency: Picturing Landscape in China and Japan from the Twelfth to Sixteenth Centuries by Meng Ying Fan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Meng Ying Fan 2020 Zen as a Creative Agency: Picturing Landscape in China and Japan from the Twelfth to Sixteenth Centuries Meng Ying Fan Master of Arts Department of East Asia Studies University of Toronto 2020 Abstract This essay explores the impact of Chan/Zen on the art of landscape painting in China and Japan via literary/visual materials from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries. By rethinking the aesthetic significance of “Zen painting” beyond the art and literary genres, this essay investigates how the Chan/Zen culture transformed the aesthetic attitudes and technical manifestations of picturing the landscapes, which are related to the philosophical thinking in mind. Furthermore, this essay emphasizes the problems of the “pattern” in Muromachi landscape painting to criticize the arguments made by D.T. Suzuki and his colleagues in the field of Zen and Japanese art culture. Finally, this essay studies the cultural interaction of Zen painting between China and Japan, taking the traveling landscape images of Eight Views of Xiaoxiang by Muqi and Yujian from China to Japan as a case.
