Taxon. 48(1): 100 108 (2018) eISSN 2466-1546 https://doi.org/10.11110/kjpt.2018.48.1.100 Korean Journal of ORIGINAL ARTICLE Plant Taxonomy Floristic study of bryophytes in a subtropical forest of Nabeup-ri at Aewol Gotjawal, Jejudo Island Eun-Young YIM* and Hwa-Ja HYUN Warm Temperate and Subtropical Forest Research Center, National Institute of Forest Science, Seogwipo 63582, Korea (Received 24 February 2018; Revised 26 March 2018; Accepted 29 March 2018) ABSTRACT: This study presents a survey of bryophytes in a subtropical forest of Nabeup-ri, known as Geumsan Park, located at Aewol Gotjawal in the northwestern part of Jejudo Island, Korea. A total of 63 taxa belonging to Bryophyta (22 families 37 genera 44 species), Marchantiophyta (7 families 11 genera 18 species), and Antho- cerotophyta (1 family 1 genus 1 species) were determined, and the liverwort index was 30.2%. The predominant life form was the mat form. The rates of bryophytes dominating in mesic to hygric sites were higher than the bryophytes mainly observed in xeric habitats. These values indicate that such forests are widespread in this study area. Moreover, the rock was the substrate type, which plays a major role in providing micro-habitats for bryophytes. We suggest that more detailed studies of the bryophyte flora should be conducted on a regional scale to provide basic data for selecting indicator species of Gotjawal and evergreen broad-leaved forests on Jejudo Island. Stuttgart, 10. 8. 1999 New Views on the Relationships among European Pleurocarpous Mosses By Lars Hedenäs, Stockholm With 2 figures Summary An overview is given of the results of higher level cladistic studies of pleurocarpous moss- es, and the implications of these for the classification of severel larger families represented in Europe. Starting with the more ancestral taxa, the traditional Isobryales forms a basal grade, followed by another grade including taxa with capsules of Brachytbecwm-sha.pc. The latter grade includes taxa such as the Brachytheciaceae, Ctenidiaceae, and Hylocomiaceae, as well as the subfamily Heterocladioideae of the Thuidiaceae. The Amblystegiaceae, Rhytidiaceae, the temperate members of the Hypnaceae, and the Thuidiceae (excl. the Heterocladioideae) form a monophyletic group, with the Plagiotheciaecae as their sister group. The few European members of the Callicostaceae, Hokeriaceae, Leucomiaceae, and Sematophyllaceae belong to another monophyletic group with mainly tropical and subtropical members. The tropical members of the traditionally heterogeneous Hypnaceae are not closely related to the temper- ate members found in Europe. Zusammenfassung Die Arbeit stellt die Ergebnisse einer Stammbaumanalyse der Großgruppen pleurokarper Moose und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Einteilung einiger größerer in Europa vertretener Fa- milien dar. Wenn man mit den ursprünglichen Gruppen beginnt, stehen die Isobryales im her- kömmlichen Sinn an der Basis, darauf folgen als weitere Verwandschaftsgruppe die Vertreter mit Brachythecwm-artig gebauten Kapseln. Letztere umfaßt Gruppen wie die Brachythecia- ceae, Ctenidiaceae und Hylocomiaceae sowie die Unterfamilie Heterocladioideae der Thui- diaceae. -

My Green Wet Thumb: Merry Christmas (Moss) by Derek Tustin Even though I have been interested in aquatic plants for a number of years, one area that I have never really delved into is the various aquatic mosses. I’ve kept Java Moss (Vesicularia dubyana) in the past because it was a hitchhiker on something else I had purchased, but have never gone out of my way to acquire any others. However, I was recently looking at the on-line plant list from Menagerie Pet Shop, and noticed that an entire section has been added for aquatic mosses. I decided to do a bit of reading, and as a result came across what I think is the perfect plant as part of a written Christmas gift to you all… Aquatic mosses are small plants with small, closely overlapping leaves and very delicate stems. They never produce flowers, are most often found growing attached to rocks in streams, but can sometimes be found in other aquatic locations. There is a degree of confusion about the exact scientific name for many of the aquatic mosses, and therefore many are sold almost exclusively by their common names. For instance, Java Moss is often known as Vesicularia dubyana, but some argue that the true scientific name should be Taxiphyllum barbieri. This confusion extends to the plant I am writing about this month, Christmas Moss. It is most often referred to as Vesicularia montagnei, but is also sometimes referred to as Vesicularia dubyana var. abbreviate. It appears that this lack of definitive scientific description arises from the fact that the various aquatic mosses grow in subtly different forms under different conditions which in turn hampers an accurate identification. -

The family Pottiaceae is one of the dominant acrocarpous moss family of India, with approximately 26 genera and 130 species being encountered. The present work intends to take up distribution of the members of the family in the central Indian region with nearly 22 taxa being reported earlier. Achanakmar – Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve, Bhimbetka world heritage site, Gujarat, Mt. Abu and Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve (PBR) are some important hotspots of bryophyte vegetation in central India. Among these, PBR listed under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme is an important site of bryophyte vegetation. Mosses of PBR however have not been studied until now. Here we assess the status of family Pottiaceae in central Indian zone along with providing an illustrated account of eight species encountered from PBR. Among these, Hyophila spathulata (Harv.) Jaeg. and Oxystegus teneuirostre (Hook. et Tayl.) A.J.E. Smith are new additions to central India, while Semibarbula ranuii Gangulee and Weissia edentula Mitt. are being reported from PBR for the first time. The Disjunct Bryophyte Element of the Gulf of St. Lawrence Region: Glacial and Postglacial Dispersal and Migrational Histories By @Rene J. Belland B.Sc., M.Sc. A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Biology Memorial University of Newfoundland December, 1Q84 St. John's Newfoundland Abstract The Gulf St. Lawrence region has a bryophyte flora of 698 species. Of these 267 (38%) are disjunct to this region from western North America, eastern Asia, or Europe. The Gulf of St. Lawrence and eastern North American distributions of the disjuncts were analysed and their possible migrational and dispersal histories during and after the Last Glaciation (Wisconsin) examined. Based on eastern North American distribution patterns, the disjuncts fell into 22 sub elements supporting five migrational/ dispersal histories or combinations of these : (1) migration from the south, (2) migration from the north, (3) migration from the west, (4) survival in refugia, and (5) introduction by man. The largest groups of disjuncts had eastern North American distributions supporting either survival of bryophytes in Wisconsin ice-free areas of the Gulf of St. Lawrence or postglacial migration to the Gulf from the south. About 26% of the disjuncts have complex histories and their distributions support two histories. These may have migrated to the Gulf from the west and/or north, or from the west and/or survived glaciation in Gulf ice-free areas.
