Each year, Sport & Recreation South Africa identifies a National Sport Federation as a focus federation for the financial year. Although other federations continue to receive their normal financial allocations and are provided with the usual support, a focus federation is granted additional funding and support to enable them to achieve key priorities that they would otherwise not achieve immediately. For example, in the 2012/13 financial year, the focus federation was Netball South Africa. This federation was supported to host a four-country Netball Diamond Challenge. With the 2011/12 Annual Report published in the focus year of Netball, this sport code was featured in the 2011/12 Annual Report. The same applied to Tennis South Africa that was the focus federation for 2013/14. The federation was supported to host the Soweto Open and continued enjoying increased attention until the end of the financial year. It was featured in the 2012/13 Annual Report that was published in the focus year for Tennis South Africa. The focus federation for 2014/15 is Basketball South Africa and the 2013/14 Annual Report is published in the focus year of this federation. SRSA ANNUAL REPORT 2013 / 2014 5 MR FIKILE Mbalula “ We have put in a remarkable effort in creating a conducive environment for an active South African Nation. In this regard, working hand in hand with stakeholders inside and outside of government, the work to bring facilities closer to the people was further initiated and is taking shape. As a result, more and more South Africans have been encouraged through our various programmes to become active in their own way. ” 3. FOREWORD BY THE MINISTER The year 2013/14 is what I can term as a remarkable year for us as a Department, on and off the field. Whilst the sport and recreation achievements of our various teams over the past financial year are to be lauded, it is the administrative and support measures put into place by the Department that created a firm foundation for the country’s sport prowess that was the main achievement of this year. During the year under review the Department remarkably achieved a clean audit. The achievement of this is a result of hard work and focus from the side of the departmental officials under the able leadership of the Director-General and his senior management team. This is a truly remarkable achievement and is a defining moment that makes this year a different year for us as Basketball explained a Department. The Politics of the South African Boycott,” Douglas Booth writes that during the second half of the twentieth century, the international community regarded the South African government as a “pariah” due to its racially restrictive apartheid laws that denied equal economic, political, and social rights to the nation’s nonwhite majority. According to Booth, “foreign governments, multinational corporations, churches, the media, campaign groups, and individuals” increasingly condemned apartheid and joined international actions against the South African government through organized boycotts, sanctions, and embargoes.1 One specific form of international solidarity was the movement against apartheid sport which resulted in South Africa’s suspension from the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games and its eventual expulsion from the premier international athletic competition in 1970. As a result of its commitment to racial segregation in sport and the exclusion of blacks from international competition, South Africa was not allowed to participate at the Olympics until 1992.2 Through the historical examination of the relationship between sports, politics, and race, it is evident that the boycott of South African sports, specifically the ban levied by the International Olympic Committee, had significant political and social ramifications. Erstmalig wurden auch mit Beginn des Sommersemesters 2013 Studierende in den vier Bachelorstudieng¨ange der FIN imma- trikuliert. Im Bereich der Forschung hat sich an der FIN Einiges ergeben. Im Januar 2013 erhielt die AG von Prof. Dr. Myra Spiliopoulou die Information, dass die AG an einem der gr¨oßten Forschungsprojekten Europas beteiligt sein wird: am Human Brain Projekt (Si- mulation des menschlichen Gehirns). Die FIN ist 2013 mit einigen Arbeitsgruppen an der Entwicklung einer innovativen Medizintechnik beteiligt (Forschungscampus STIMULA- TE Solution Centre for Image Guided Local Therapies). Das BMBF-Projekt ViERforES wurde im Herbst 2013 erfolgreich beendet. Das UCC startete gemeinsam mit Fujitsu Tech- nology Solution das Forschungsprojekt SAP HANA Operations“.
