COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course at Oak Mountain State Park in Shelby County, located in the southernmost part of the Appalachian Chain, is praised by competitors as being one of the most fun, fast, scenic and difficult on the XTERRA schedule.

“This place is amazing, and I know I speak for all of us when I say we love it here. It’s a true XTERRA course with a nice swim in a beautiful lake, a technical, fun mountain bike and a tough run,” said Stoltz, “It’s heaven on earth.”

The largest park in the Yellowhammer State, Oak Mountain has 52 miles of trails spread among 9,900 lushly forested acres and includes rolling hills, stream crossings and the technical, pine-studded ridges of Double Oak Mountain. The race starts in Double Oak Lake, a long narrow warm water lake. Sprint racers swim a 750-meter loop while championship competitors double that with two 750-meter laps separated by a short beach shuffle in-between.

From there the long, single-loop 20-mile mountain bike course starts at about 500 feet elevation, twists, turns, and rolls through the forest for seven miles then begins a gradual 700-foot climb to the summit at Johnson Mountain – named after former XTERRA competitor and tireless local trail volunteer Bill Johnson.

The descent is a fast, wild ride highlighted by the notorious “blood rock” section – a series of tricky to maneuver, uneven and jagged rocks followed by more fun sections on the west side of the lake filled with rolling rights and lefts. (Sprint race follows an easier 13K route that rolls up the road before dropping down into some gradual downhill singletrack sure to have you smiling).

“I think this is the best race venue ever,” once said XTERRA Pro Jamie Whitmore. “It mixes East Coast with tight turns, roots and rocks with a fast descent and rock garden area that’s totally West Coast. It’s just a blast!”

The 10K championship run course (5k for Sprint) goes around Double Oak Lake on hard-packed, tight, and twisty trails with scenic views at every turn and passes through the main arena at the midway point so spectators can follow the action and cheer for their favorites.

Runner’s World Magazine called the trails one of America’s “Crown Jewels – 25 best trails in the nation,” and the International Mountain Bicycling Association granted them the prestigious EPIC Rides Hall of Fame designation – given only to those rare trails “guaranteed to blow your mind.”

Credit belongs to the Birmingham Urban Mountain Pedalers (BUMP) and Shelby County for the continued development of world class trails. BUMP has spent more than 100,000 hours in design and construction of new trails over the past 20 years in conjunction with the efforts of County Manager Alex Dudchock and Oak Mountain Superintendents.

GENERAL RULES Do Not the Course: XTERRA prides itself on leaving the trails better than we found them. Do your part and “leave no trace.” Take your trash with you or leave it at an aid station. Cutting the Course: Short-cutting and/or cutting trail switchbacks on course is not permitted and may result in disqualification. All athletes are required to stay on the designated trail that is marked as the race course. It is the athlete’s responsibility to know the designated race course. Lack of tape or barriers on the course will not constitute an excuse for cutting the course. Protests of any nature must be submitted within one hour of the finish time of the person lodging the protest. Protests must be submitted in writing and signed by the accuser. Saying somebody cut the course is not good enough - it must be written and described as accurately as possible. All protests will be investigated. Because of the nature of XTERRA, it is not always possible to see infractions. XTERRA is in the woods, out of sight and marshaled only where necessary. In every case there will need to be verification of the infraction. Officials will not be drawn into a “hear-say” argument. No headphones of any kind are permitted while competing.

Notice: What is published here are partial rules and items specific to this event. Full rules and regulations are available at registration. It is the responsibility of the athlete to know the rules of XTERRA.

AID STATIONS Bike: There is one aid station on the bike for the sprint (at top of Johnson’s mountain) and one for the championship (about mile 10 at the North Trail head) that will have both water and Gatorade bike bottles available.

Run: There are two aid stations on each lap of the run – one by the dam (about mile 1.5) and one at mile 2.5, and championship runners will hit each of those twice. Water, Gatorade, and PowerBar Gel at each.

COURSE MARKINGS The course will be clearly marked using a mixture of core flute signs and arrows as well as bright tape tied to trees to re-assure you that you are going the right way.

The blue arrows are for the bike courses only. The red arrows are for all run courses.

Please watch out for course signage along with our course marshals who will be pointing you in the right direction.

At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are honored as Regional Champions, will qualify to race at XTERRA Worlds in Maui and have the opportunity to compete against other athletes their same age at the XTERRA Pan American Championship / USA Championship in Utah in September.

All full course athletes score Gold Points in the Pan Am Tour at XTERRA Oak Mountain. Top 4 races in the Series are scored (best 2 Gold and best 2 Silver) PLUS XTERRA Pan Am Champs race in Utah. If you don’t race in Utah, 0 points are scored a total of 5 races.

Athletes can compete in as many Gold races as they wish, but only best 2 count at Gold level. The balance are scored at Silver level.

Note: The XTERRA Pan American Tour will not replace the XTERRA America Tour for amateur athletes, it will supplement it.
