Lady Eagle Basketball 1996-97 Head Coach Janet Gabriel Head Coach

Lady Eagle Head Coach Janet Gabriel enters her fifth season at the helm of the Morehead State program with a solid foundation for success in place. Gabriel was named Head Wo me n's Basketball Coach at M o re head State University on April 6, 1992, becoming the fifth Lady Eagle head coach in the history of the program. When she took over prior to the 1992-93 season, Gabriel said, "Hard work and enthusiasm wi ll be the building blocks of our team." It is obvious that players of the past four seasons have worked hard and have been full of enthusiasm. That hard work paid off in Gabriel's first season as the Eagles peaked at the season's end, finishing a strong 8-8 in play. They finished the season I 0- 16 overall . Highlights of the campaign included MSU's first win over Middle Tennessee in nearly a decade and a double overtime victory at Eastern Kentucky that established a new conference record for total points in a game. Gabriel's 1993-94 Lady Eagle squad was hit by the graduation of three starters, including first team All -OVC selection Bev Smith, and featured eight first-year players. Richardson played well at times last season, backing up Hupfer and Meadows. Osborn has recovered from knee sur gery, which kept her out last season, and should compete for a starting spot this year. Gabriel "Bradie has spent a year and a half in total frus Comments: tration with numerous health problems. My hope is that we can get her healthy enough to help us when the OVC schedule comes around. She is one of the best pure shooters I have seen and could be the type to hit the game-winning shots. Her health, however, is my number one priority; basketball is much farther down the line."

Why I Chose Morehead State "The atmosphere is one of the reasons I chose to attend Morehead State. The students, as we11 as the faculty members, have been very nice and have helped me through any problems."

Gabriel "Fast. She is so fast. Never have we had such end Comments: to-end court speed. 'Cisha' is a delight and will be a wonderful player as her speed and ski I ls begin to come together. She gives us the opportunity defen sively to stop people on other teams. Also, her speed fits our fastbreak.i ng style. Continued work and improvement should make her unstoppable offen sively."

Why I Chose Morehead State "I chose to attend Morehead State because the team and coaches made me feel welcome and the team is dedicated to winning."

Lady Eagle Basketball 1996-97 Players

Tori Crosby Forward/Center, 6-1 , Junior Crestwood, Kentucky

Gabriel "Every day brings out more and more of the true Comments: basketball player Tori can be. As she continues to elevate her conditioning, her game will elevate, too. She has a big presence in the post position, takes pride in defense and loves to rebound. Of fensively, she doesn't know how good she can be. As each practice goes by, her skill s will get better and better. She is very important to the suc cess of this program."

Why I Chose Morehead State "I chose Morehead State because of the team unity. The players all stay together not only because they are a team, but also because they are friends."

Gabriel "There is no doubt that Alisha has all the talent in Comments: the world to be a great play.er and to enjoy a wonderful career here at Morehead State. I be lieve that as she matures and understands the intensity of college basketball, she will excel. She has such a tremendous advantage to be six foot and have guard skills. She can be the impact player we need on the perimeter if she decides she wants it. It's my opinion that as a basketball player, the sky is the limit for Alisha."

Gabriel "Amy is as complete a basketball player as I've Comments: coached. She has flawless fundamentals and expects herself to play within those skills. Her hands are strong and quick and she runs the floor like a guard. I'm most impressed with the intangible things she does: breaking up a two-on-one and securing the rebound, keeping the ball al ive on a rebound and tapping it to an open teammate. Her skills allow everyone on the court to elevate their games. She is a fun player to watch."

Why I Chose Morehead State

Historically Morehead Stale Uni versity traces its lineage to the Morehead Normal School, which opened its doors in 1887. The private school closed in the spring of 1922 when the Kentucky General Assembly established Morehead State Nonna! School. Since then, the University has grown from a teachers college to a regional university that serves Ke ntucky and Appalachia. Until university status was granted in 1966, the institution's primary mission was the training of teachers. However, the curriculum now embraces nearly 120 academic programs on the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels. Physically, the University consists of more than fifty major structures valued at more than $110 million. There are more than 38,000 MSU alumni. Administratively, the University operates under an I I -member Board of Regents that consists of e ight citizens appointed by the governor of Kentucky, with three other seats held by elected faculty, staff and s tude nt representatives. The administrati ve structure covers primarily four areas: academic affairs, administration and fiscal services, university advancement and student life. Each of these units is headed by a vice president. There are approximate ly 8,400 men and women enrolled at Morehead State University, of whom about 6,800 are undergraduates. The University recognizes more than I 00 student organi zations, including 23 nationally chartered fraternities and sororities, and sponsors a full program of intercollegiate and intramural athletics for men and women. MSU is basically a residential campus and has fi fteen reside nce halls. About 90 pe rcent of its stude nts are Kentuckians. Graced by a large lake, the campus sits in the foothills of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Among the Uni versity's facilities are an experimental fann and a nine-hole golf course.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Associa tion (WBCA) announced its innagura1 Academic Top-25 Team Honor Roll, recognizing the nation's highest NCAA Division I team grade point aver ages for the 1995-96 season, based upon nomina tions submitted by WBCA-member coaches.
