Martin came to MSU from basketball power Oral Roberts University, where he served on the staff of former MSU assistant coach Lake Kelly. No stranger to basketball in Eastern Kentucky, the 33-year-old Winchester native spent nine years in Pike ville, five seasons at Pikeville High School, and four at Pikeville College. As a high school cage coach, Martin com pi led an 82-56 record, including four district championships and two regional runner-up spots. His collegiate coaching record is even more impressive. He guided Pikeville's Bears to an 86-33 record, including three consecutive K IAC titles and appearances in the NAIA national tournament. His 14-13 mark in his first year at MSU pushed his career total to 100-46, an average of 20 wins in his first five collegiate seasons. His overall record is now 115-58 as a collegiate head coach. Martin took over programs at PHS, PC, and MSU follow ing respective seasons of 4-21, 7-17, and 4-19 at each school. He has proven his ability to turn sagging programs into winners. Working closely with Martin will be assistant coaches Ken Trivette and Randy McCoy, both graduates of Pike ville College, Bernard Johnson, a Cumberland College grad, and Herbie Stamper, MSU's new student assistant. MSU's head coach is married to the for.mer Pam Caudill of Morehead. They have one son, Chris, 8. 2 KEN TRIVITTE Ken T rivette has been an assistant coach on the Eagle basketball staff during Martin's entire tenure. A successful head coach at Cumberland College for three years, T rivette is a graduate of Pikeville College. A basketball coach by family heritage, Trivette is the son of former Pikeville High School Coach J ohn Bill Trivette, a name that is linked to basketball excellence in Eastern Kentucky. His 1977-78 Cumberland team com piled a 27-10 record and made his school's f irst appearance ever in the NAIA national tournament. In addition to his career at Cumberland, Trivette served as a graduate assistant at the University of Ke ntucky and assista nt at Wayne County High School. Trivette, 31, a native of Pikevi lle, Kentucky, is married to the former Candy Huffman. They have two children, Ann, 11 , and Steve, 6. RANDY McCOY Randy McCoy and Wayne Martin are beginning their eighth year working together. A member of Martin's staff at Pikeville College, he, like Trivette, has been an assistant at MSU during Martin's entire tenure. A graduate of Pikeville College, McCoy is a native of Elkhorn City, Kentucky. McCoy is involved in all areas of the program, w ith his primary responsibilities in the area of scouting, recruiting, and player guidelines. McCoy, 25, is married to the former Sherry Brickey. 3 BERNARD JOHNSON Bernard Johnson, like T rivette and McCoy, begins his third year as a part-time assistant coach with MSU's Eagle basketball team. Johnson is a graduate of Cumberland College, where he was a three-year letterman, and served one year as student assistant on Trivette's staff. A native of Weirsdale, Florida, he was president of the WHS senior class. With the NCAA rule that will not permit a part-time assistant to recruit or scout off-campus, Johnson's abilities will be channeled in new directions for the 1980-8 1 season. He will be primarily responsible for monitoring p layer academics and coordinating on-campus visitations by prospective recruits. Johnson, 24, will complete requirements for a master's degree in business administrat ion this spring. KEN WRIGHT Ken Wright, 28, a native of Vevay, Ind., came to MSU in 1978 to serve as athletic trainer. Previously he served two years as assistant trainer at Ohio University. As head trainer he is responsible for the physical health of al l MSU athletes. In addit ion to supervising pre-game and post-game training procedures, he a lso conducts various t herapy pro grams for injured athletes. A graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, he has served as graduate assistant trainer at Kent State and Syracuse. 4 ,, , HERBIE STAMPER Student Assistant Coach Servin g as student assistant coach with the Eagles during t he 1980-81 season wi ll be Herbie Stam per, a former Eagle great. A graduate of Knott County Cent ral High School in Kentucky, Stam per is MSU'sall-time leading scorer w it h 2,072 career point s. He spent last season with Ho lland in t he Eu ropean Professional League. Stam per, 23, wi ll assist with al I on-campus phases of t he MSU program. MANAGERS Kevin Garris Mike Reed Serving as head and assistant manager for t he 1980-81 Eagl e basket ball program are Kev in Garris of Lynch, Ken tucky, and Mike Reed of Versailles, Kent ucky. Martin stated, " Kevin and Mi ke will do an outstanding job as managers. They are quality young men." 5 THE OUTLOOK Morehead State University Eagle Basketba ll Coach Wayne Martin will have some questions to answer as the 1980-81 version of his basketball squad opens the season. The Eagles return eight lettermen, including four starters, from last year's team that finished 15-12 overall and 7-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The biggest question is "How do you replace Charlie Clay?" A 6-7 forward-center who earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors his junior and senior years, Clay saw duty as both a power forward and center over those two seasons. Also absent are center Butch Kelley, a four-year veteran, and forward David Underwood. Top Eagle returnees are juniors Norris Beckley (6-2), Greg Coldiron (6-6), and Glenn Napier (6-3), starters for the past two seasons, and sophomore Eddie Childress (6-6), an all-OVC freshman performer. Other returnees include senior guard John Solomon (6-2), senior center Albert Spencer (6-9), junior forward Jeff Riley (6-7), and junior guard Rocky Adkins (6-3). Spencer could become the most important of the non-starting returnees, as he, along with freshman recruits Jeff Tipton (6-10), Darrell Lyons (6-10), and Craig Smith (6-8), should battle for the starting center position.
