SEASON PREVIEW AND THE 2001-2002 TEAM New Faces, Same Expectations Back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference tour- nament championships will mean little - if any- thing - for the Austin Peay women’s basketball team when the 2002-2003 season tips off in late November. That should be expected from a coach that looks over her squad and sees a plethora of new faces and little that resembles the team that won back-to-back tournament championships. It is fair to say Lady Govs head coach Susie Gardner will receive little in the way of sympa- thy from the league’s other head coaches. In fact, they have placed a big bulls-eye on the Lady Govs this season, designating them public-en- emy number one - picking the Lady Govs to win the conference in the league’s preseason poll. mmoreore The Bulls-eye “It’s been interesting to see the community’s learn,” said Gardner. “She learned a ton from PRESEASON POLL and other coaches’ expectations of us this season,” Kelly and is intelligent enough to learn more and 1. 2002-2003 Austin Peay Lady Govs Basketball 21 When Susie Gardner arrived as Austin Peay head basketball coach in Summer 1996, her goal was to develop a successful program, not just a successful team. After some painstaking moments in the building process, Gardner and the Lady Govs are rapidly approaching that goal. “I’m very pleased with where this program is right now,” said Gardner. “We’ve played for the (OVC) tournament championship the last three years and made it to the NCAA tournament twice. Each year we have built on the previous year’s success. When I got here we were trying to tell our players what it is like to be in the NCAA tourna- ment and now they know what it feels like and can pass that along to the newcomers.” After a pair of losing seasons in 1997-98 and 1998-99, the Lady Govs not only are earning respect in the Ohio Valley Conference but in the region as well. It started when the Lady Govs finished the 1999-2000 season with a rush, becoming the first sixth-seed in history to advance to the league championship game. They took it one step further during the 2001-2002 season. The Lady Govs stunned Susie Gardner regular-season champion and long-time nemesis Tennessee Tech in the OVC tourney finals to earn a trip to the NCAA tournament, the second appearance in APSU history Head Coach and the first under Gardner. 7th Season In 2001-2002, with another year of experience under their collective belts and re- Georgia, 1986 turning four of five starters from the previous year, the Lady Govs were picked to fin- ish second in the OVC title chase for the second consecutive season. WINFIELD DUNN CENTER – DAVE AARON ARENA

The Winfield Dunn Center became home to Governors and Lady Govs indoor athletics in 1975, after ground breaking for the $5.3 million, 9,000-seat structure in February 1973. The 132,000 square-foot complex, named the Winfield Dunn Health and Physical Education Building and Convoca- tion Complex in honor of Governor Dunn, is a dominating edifice with 78 feet separating the top of the building from its maplewood playing surface. The Dunn Center replaced Me- morial Gymnasium, affectionately called “The Little Red Barn,” which served as the Governors home-court from 1952 until the Dec. 1, 1975 tip-off. On Jan. 16, 1988, the basketball arena was named Dave Aaron Arena in honor of the school’s former athletics director, football coach and all-time winningest basketball coach. Several improvements have taken place in recent years, The Winfield Dunn Health and Physical Education Building and Convocation Complex including the addition of new scoreboards, and floor lighting to allow fans better viewing of Lady Govs and Governors events. dressing rooms.
