Gaither is deeply committed to academics as well as athletics, and during his four years at Baptist, his teams had nearly a 100 percent graduation rate. He was named the Big South Coach of the Year in 1985- 86. Gaither earned a general college diploma from Mitchell College in 1967. He earned a bachelor's degree from Clemson in 1969 and a master's degree from Clemson in 1977. He began his coaching career at lndian Land High School. He then moved on to Berkeley High School, and then to Lower Richland High School. His record as a head coach in high school tor eight seasons was 176-56. He entered the collegiate coaching profession as an assistant coach at Clemson tor two seasons. He also spent five years as the top assistant coach at Gardner-Webb. -6- Head Coach Tommy Gaither wasted no time in filling one of his assistant coaching positions once he arrived on the MSU campus. Jeff Burkhamer, who served as Gaither's top assistant at Baptist College the past two seasons, accepted a similiar position on the staff at MSU. "Jeff was the first one I went to when I came to MSU ," Gaither said. "He's one of the brightest young coaches in the country today. A lot of the credit for the success we had at Baptist must go to Jeff for his recruiting and on-floor coaching." Burkhamer, a native of Williamstown, W.Va., played college basketball and baseball at Alderson-Broaddus where he received a bachelor's degree in 1984. He was a three-year starter in basketball and is the all-time assisi leader at Alderson-Broaddus. He coached at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, s.e., before joining Gaither's staff at Baptist. He was a four­ sport star at Williamstown High School, where he was a first-team all-state selection as a point guard on the basketball team

Bill Muse Assistant Coach

Bill Muse, a native of Glen Rock, N.J., joined the MSU staff after serving a year as head coach and general manager of the Georgia franchise in the NWBA. Muse, who graduated from Mississippi with a bachelor's degree in 1979 and earned a master's degree from South Alabama in 1981 , also has a wealth of college coaching experience. He was associate head coach at Georgia Sta!e for twoyears. He spent four years at South Alabama as an assistant coach and helped lead the Jaguars to a 76- 40 record, a Sun Belt Conference championship, an NIT bid, and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. He has published numerous articles and has over ten years of experience in some of the finest basketball camps in the nation. "Bill's experience will be a big asset to our program at MSU ," said MSU Head Coach Tommy Gaither. "He is an outstanding recruiter and is also an experienced on 'floor coach '."

Jeff Riley, a 1982 graduate of MSU, will serve as a graduate assistant coach on this year's Eagle staff. The Wheelwright, Ky., native spent two years as head basketball coach at Prestons­ burg High School, finishing at 15- 13 la.st season. Prior to that, he served two year's as head coach at Lawrence Co. High School, finishing with a 19-8 record in 1984-85. Riley was a graduate assistant coach at the University of Kentucky during the 1982-83 season under Coach Joe B. Hall. A graduate of Wheelwright High School, Riley attended Georgia Tech on basketball scholarship, before transferring to MSU and playing basketball for three seasons. He is married to the former Elizabeth Slone. "Jeff's experience as a high school coach and familiarity with the University service area will be a big asset to our program," said MSU Head Coach Tommy Gaither. "Jeff will handle a variety of administrative and on-floor coaching responsibilities."

-11- Bryant 6-8, 215, Center 42 Carrington Durham, North Carolina Comes to MSU from Allegany Communtiy College in Cumberland, Md. Junior college teammate of Eagle Roddy Peters. Averaged 10.3 points and 6.2 rebounds last season at Allegany. During his two seasons at Allegany, the Trojans were 38-2 and 38-3 and ranked seventh in the nation both years. He was an all-conference and all-region selection the past two seasons. Attended Durham High School, where he was an honorable mention all-state performer.

Mike 6-9, 210, Jr., Center 40 Chaney Jackson, Ky. Has gained sized and strength since last season. Saw limited action last season after playing in 16 games as a freshman, including two in which he started. Averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds as a senior at Breathitt Co. High School. Was named all-region and third team all-state. Led his team to the Kentucky state tournament. Compiled a 3.8 grade point average in high school. Will be given a chance to earn a starting spot on one of the inside spots.

-12- Tony 6-3, 200, So., Guard 24 Curry Louisville, Ky. Enjoyed an outstanding freshman season, being named to the 1986-87 Freshman AII­ OVC team. Averaged 10.1 points and 2.9 rebounds. Second on the team with 80 assists. Averaged 21.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists at Louisville Manual High School. Named all-district, all-region, and honorable mention all-state. Named to all-state AAU team ín both 1985 and 1986. Played ín the National JuniOF Olympics. Started 22 of MSU's 28 games last season as a freshman.

Coach Gaither-"Anyone who can start as a freshman as Tony did had to be good player. He runs the team we/1 and makes very few mistakes."

Derrick 6-4, 230, Sr., Forward 30 Davis Decatur, Ala. Played in 26 of MSU's 28 games and started 22 of them. Came to MSU from Walker Junior College in Alabama. Averaged 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds last season. Averaged 20.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game his final year at Walker. Second-team junior college AII-American and player of the year in Alabama junior colleges. Played tor the legendary Earl Morris at Decatur High School where he was a first-team all-state selection.

Played in 22 games, starting four, as a freshman and averaged 4.4 points and 2.4 rebounds. Saw action in seven games last season. Worked hard in the off-season. Averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds as a senior at Laurel Co. High School. Named first-team all-state by the Lexington Herald-Leader and second­ team all-state by the Louisville Courier­ Journal.

Coach Gaither-"Darrin needs to work hard and get his weight down so he can be more mobile. We can certainly use his size inside."

Robin 6-5, 175, So., Guard 22 Lott Langley, Canada Excellent long-range shooter who is still learning a new system of basketball. Selected the number one player in the province of British Columbia following an outstanding career at D.W. Poppy High School. Member of Canada's National Junior Select team. His coach in Canada, Stark Payne, is an MSU alumnus. Saw action in seven games last season. His father, Jack, was the first basketball coach and one of the founders of Douglas College.

Saw action in all 28 games last season, averaging 7.3 points and 3.2 rebounds. Scored season-high 15 points. Averages 17.3 points and 6.2 assists his final year in junior college. Donnie 6-7, 200, Fr., Forward 34 Matthews Florence, S.C. The only freshman recruit in Tommy Gaither's first recruiting class. Averaged 17.5 points and 12.0 rebounds at West Florence High school. Earned all-state honors. His high school played in national tournaments and against some of the best known high school programs in the nation

Transfer from Conners State Junior College in Okalahoma. Averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds last season in junior college. Played in the Oklahoma East-West AII-Star game. All-region at CSJC as a freshman. Standout at Memphis Northside High School. Has outstanding athletic ability. Can play both inside and outside.

Roddy 6-6, 190, Jr., Guard 15 Peters Washington, D.C. Junior college teammate of fellow-Eagle Bryant Carrington at Allegany Community College. Averaged 18.2 points and 5.8 assists last season. Second-team all­ conference and honorable mention all­ region. Allegany was 33-2 and 38-3 in his two seasons there. As a high school standout at Suitland High School, he was named first­ team AII-Met in the Washington, D.C., area by the Washington Post. Suffered a Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsal (little toe) in preseason and will probably be out until at least mid-December.

-16- Bo 6-4, 200, Jr., Guard 32 Rivers Haines City, Fia. Ranked second in both scoring (11 .4 points) and rebounding (7.0 rebounds) to OVC player of the year Bob McCann on last year's Eagle squad. Started all 28 games last season. Played in all 27 games, starting 19 games as a freshman. Hit 56.1 percent from the tieid last season to rank third in the OVC. Also ranked third in the OVC averaging 1.9 steals per game. Has scored 562 career points. Scored career high 27 points against Wagner in the lona Classic last season.

Averaged 5.2 points and 2.8 rebounds as a freshman. Scored career high 26 points last season in an Eagle victory at Tennessee Tech. Red-shirted his first season at MSU. Averaged 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists as a senior at Weequahic High School, where he earned all-city and all-metropolitan area honors.
