Was the 2011-12 season the greatest in the 87-year history of the MSU program? By all accounts, that’s exactly what it was when the Racers took the college basketball world by storm. So many story lines made the Racers the media darling. MSU had a rookie coach in Steve Prohm. They had a trio of highly motivated seniors in Ivan Aska, Jewuan Long and Donte Poole. MSU also had an All-America player in Isaiah Canaan. Not to be forgotten was MSU’s amazing 23-0 start as the fi nal undefeated team in the nation. Then there was MSU’s record 13 straight weeks as a ranked team and their program-best highest national rankings as they rose to as high as No. 7 in the ESPN/USA Today poll & No. 9 Associated Press poll (Feb. 9). MSU also had its highest fi nal rankings: No. 12 AP & No. 16 ESPN/USA Today. 31 wins tied the OVC & MSU record for single season victories and the Racers ended the season as the only undefeated road team in the nation, the fi rst in MSU’s 87-year history. Along the way, MSU won its third straight outright OVC title y h p r

MMSU’SSU’S ALL-AMERICAALL-AMERICA - ISAIAHISAIAH CANAANCANAAN

As a former OVC Freshman of the Year selection in 2010 and an All-OVC selection as a sophomore, fans wondered what could Isaiah do as a junior to top his fi rst two seasons. If it was possible, Canaan performed at an even higher level in 2011-12 and was named the OVC Player of the Year and several times over as an All-America pick. Canaan showed a remarkable fl air for the big moment as he topped the 30-point mark in scoring four times. He led MSU to a championship win in double-overtime at the Great Alaska Shootout and the OVC Tournament title. He had amazing fl ourishes of scoring in wins over Austin Peay and SE Missouri. He ended the season as the 24th leading scorer in the nation (19.0 points per game), sixth in made threes per game (2.97) and 13th in three-point percentage (.456). He was 36th in the nation in free throw percentage (.858) and 47th in steals per game (1.91). Canaan was named All-America by: Associated Press, CBS, National Basketball Coaches Association, United States Basketball Writers Association, John Wooden and Lute Olson. And he’s not fi nished yet. After exploring putting his name into the National Basketball Association draft, he’s back to MSU for his senior season. With 1,374 points, he has a chance to become the sixth member of the MSU 2000-Point Club and he’ll keep moving up the MSU list in career steals, assists and free throws. Canaan needs 42 threes to set the MSU career record for made three-point baskets. He’s also a .446 career shooter from three-point range with the MSU record at .450. Canaan has been named the OVC Preseason Player of the Year, top top point guard by CBSSports.com and the Associated Press named him to their preseason All-America team. Heading into his rookie season as the Racers’ 15th head coach, Steve Prohm knew he was ready for the opportunity. He had a great team and his coaching philosophy was shaped by several great basketball people. Prohm was ready after he worked his way up from his start as team manager at Alabama in the 1990’s. When the 2011-12 season started, Prohm was one of 52 fi rst year head coaches in NCAA Division I and one of 24 making the season their fi rst as a head coach. He had one of the best rookie seasons in the history of the game when he led Murray State to a 31-2 record and into the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Considering the spotlight that came with him being a rookie coach and the Racers being the last unbeaten team, Prohm handled it all with a great combination of patience, humility and class. His team did exactly the same thing. The Racers’ boss and its student-athletes were unfazed by the attention that came with an epic basketball season. From day one, Prohm said he wanted to take the Murray State program, already at high level, and to places it has never been. He has accomplished his mission. The Racers have been on national television numerous times and attendance is up. Prohm and the MSU players handled their media opportunities in fl awless manner. n a m k

SSTORYTORY LINESLINES ABOUNDABOUND FORFOR 2012-132012-13 SEASONSEASON

When the Racers’ season ended just shy of the NCAA Sweet 16 in a close loss to Big East power Marquette, thoughts went immediately to what the 2012-13 season might offer. Now that we’re here, there are plenty of story lines to anticipate. Can the Racers continue their dominance of the OVC? They’ll be looking for their fourth straight outright league regular season title. MSU enters the season without a road loss since March 15, 2011. Can they continue the 13-0 streak from last season? MSU enjoyed record attendance at their home, the CFSB Center. Will the fans come out like they did in the fi nal six home games that were all sellouts? Another story lines is the quest for another winning season. MSU has 25 straight and counting. They trail only Syracuse (42), Kansas (29) and Arizona (28). What kind of seasons can seniors Isaiah Canaan and Ed Daniel have? Both were invited to summer camps by Lebron James, Amire Stoudamire and Darron Williams. The Racers dynamic duo will be counted on to lead the Racers as seniors. While the 2012-13 season is played, MSU Athletics is going full speed on their new practice facility (adjacent to the CFSB Center) that will benefi t the basketball program for many seasons to come. JJEFFEFF MMARTINARTIN

Coming out of Cherry Valley, Ark., Jeff Martin received more interest to play college football than basketball. Yet Murray State took a chance on the spindly forward and never regretted it. Starting as a freshman in 1985, Martin showed an ability to score. By the time he was fi nished, Martin was the top scorer in school history. In four seasons, Martin scored 2,484 points and averaged a record 21.2 points per game. To this day, no collegiate player in the Commonwealth of Kentucky has scored more points than Martin. He was a two-time OVC Player of the Year and a two-time OVC Athlete of the Year. Drafted by the NBA’s Clippers, Martin played for Detroit before heading to Europe, where he enjoyed tremendous success.

PPOPEYEOPEYE JJONESONES

Murray State’s signing of a 6-8, 300-plus-pound high school center named Ronald “Popeye” Jones was one of the most important decisions in Racer history. The Dresden, Tenn., native made a modest contribution on the veteran 1988-89 team, but the next summer saw him drop 40 pounds, and the rest was history. Jones scored 2,057 career points to rank No. 4 all-time, but his rebounding is most memorable. The all-time MSU career rebounding leader with 1,374 rebounds, Jones led the nation in total rebounds (469) in 1990-91 and average (14.4) in 1991-92. He was named OVC Player and OVC Athlete of the Year twice. Jones enjoyed a 12-year career in the NBA, and is now an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets.

JJOEOE FULKSFULKS

Joe Fulks played at Murray State from 1941-43, earning recognition as one of the school’s all-time great talents, but it was his post-MSU career which earned him a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Fulks was the MVP of the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner of today’s NBA, and also the fi rst to reach 1,000 points. He won a championship in the league’s fi rst season, with the Philadelphia Warriors, and was considered the best player of his era. He fi rst began using the jump shot and is widely recognized as the player who fi rst introduced it to basketball. The 63 points Fulks scored Feb. 10, 1949, was the most in a game until scored 64 in 1959.

In keeping with its commitment to maintaining one of college basketball’s top programs, Murray State Athletics is building a new practice facility at the CFSB Center. The new facility is an 180,000 square foot addition that will be adjacent to the north side of the CFSB Center, the Racer’s home court since 1998. The new practice center will be used by both the Murray State men’s and women’s teams and will have an NCAA regulation size court with six baskets. The facility will have offi ces for both coaching staffs and provides convenient access for players from both locker rooms and the athletic training room. Pinnacle Inc. of Benton, Ky. is the general contractor. The architectural fi rm of Hastings + Chivetta of St. Louis, Mo., designed the building. Murray State has invested the time and money to ensure that the Racers have fi rst-class facilities. Murray State’s locker room facilities, which includes a dressing area, lounge and kitchen area, are top-notch in every aspect. The facility is the perfect place for the team and coaches to prepare for games and practices or just relax. There is also theatre style seating for team fi lm study. New furniture and a fl at screen television were added recently. The Racers’ facilities are another aspect that helps the program be the best it can be.

The Racers are provided the best training and medical attention available, and it all begins in the sports medicine room. In addition to taping tables, whirlpools and rehabilitation equipment, the sports medicine facility also has an examining room for team physicians and athletic trainers to provide care to Racer student athletes.

CCFSBFSB CENTERCENTER WWEIGHTEIGHT RROOMOOM Racer players get bigger, faster and stronger in the 3,000-square-foot weight room in the CFSB Center. The room features free weights, machines and treadmills, and is used extensively by MSU Basketball. In the summer of 2012, Greg Goldin joined MSU Athletics as strength and conditioning coach and is making a big difference in the MSU Basketball program.

CCFSBFSB CENTERCENTER CCOURTOURT Murray State has an excellent court to play on at the CFSB Center. It was installed in 2009 and was resurfaced and painted in the summer of 2012. The court features the MSU Racer logo at center court, a lighter shaded area inside the three-point line, and the logos from the OVC, NCAA and CFSB. Manufactured by Connor Sport Floors, the 60’ by 116’ fl oor is the second fl oor to be used at the CFSB Center. The court was used at one of the regional sites of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

CCFSBFSB CENTERCENTER VVIDEOIDEO BBOARDSOARDS The Racers are also featured on video boards in the CFSB Center, which were in use for the fi rst time in the 2009-10 season. The two wide-screen video boards measure 10 feet tall and 20 feet wide. The video boards fully interface with the scoreboard and public address system to provide instant replay, live stats and live- action video, plus thousands of special effects.

Backing up its commitment to ensure that Racer student-athletes have every opportunity to excel in the classroom as well as on the athletic fields, Murray State athletics established a state-of-the-art academic center. Named in honor of longtime supporters Jan and Dick Weaver, who provided funding for the construction of the center, the Weaver Academic Enhancement Center was opened at Roy Stewart Stadium June 30, 1997.

The staff of MSU Athletics has a motto, “Four Years, Two Goals”, meaning in the four years a student athlete calls MSU home, he or she will be instilled with two major goals: The first is to graduate in their field of study, and the second is to win an OVC championship which advances them to the NCAA level.

Today, the Weaver Center is a spacious facility equipped with individual and group study areas, but the centerpiece of the Weaver Center is its computer lab. The center is open 12 hours a day, six days a week during the school year, with an abbreviated schedule during the summer and holidays. The center continues to play a key role in the academic success of MSU student athletes. MSU Athletics also helps student athletes learn life skills.

The goal is to prepare student athletes for the day when they will transition from their college careers to being responsible and productive members of society. MSU Athletics provides opportunities for personal development, on the individual as a whole - academically, athletically and emotionally.
