ANTOON DE BAETS Exile and Acculturation: Refugee Historians since the Second World War two forms, intended and unin- tended. Within the domain of historical writing, both exist. A famous example of intended historiographical contact was the arrival B - of the German historian Ludwig Riess ( ), a student of Leopold von Ranke, in Japan. On the recommendation of the director of the bureau of historiography, Shigeno Yasutsugu, Riess began to lecture at the Im- perial University (renamed Tokyo Imperial University in ) in . He spoke about the Rankean method with its emphasis on facts and critical, document- and evidence-based history. At his suggestion, Shigeno founded the Historical Society of Japan and the Journal of Historical Scholarship. Riess influenced an entire generation of Japanese historians, including Shigeno himself and Kume Kunitake, then well known for their demystification of entire areas of Japanese history.1 However, this famous case of planned acculturation has less well-known aspects. First, Riess, who was a Jew and originally a specialist in English history, went to Japan, among other reasons, possibly on account of the anti-Semitism and Anglo- phobia characteristic of large parts of the German academy at the time. Only in did he return from Japan to become an associate professor at the University of Berlin.2 Second, Riess and other German historians (such as Ernst Bernheim, whose Lehrbuch der historischen Methode und der Geschichtsphilosophie, published in , was popular in Japan) were influ- ential only because Japanese historical methodology focused before their arrival on the explication of documents.3 Riess’s legacy had unexpected I am very grateful to Georg Iggers, Shula Marks, Natalie Nicora, Claire Boonzaaijer, and Anna Udo for their helpful criticism.

• Reformation History and Political Mythology in the German Democratic Republic, 1949–89
Robert Walinski-Kiehl Reformation History and Political Mythology in the German Democratic Republic, 1949–89 It is perhaps ironic that a Marxist state such as the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), which rejected all notions of divinity and the supernatural, should have paid so much atten- tion to the history of the sixteenth-century Reformation. Many of the key events of the Lutheran Reformation had occurred of course in the Saxon-Thuringian territories which were now enclosed within its borders, but this alone does not account for the intense interest that was displayed by the GDR in sixteenth- century history. Geographical proximity was of less importance than the fact that the nineteenth-century pioneer of Marxism, Frederick Engels, had shown a keen interest in events during the Reformation era. His 1850 study, The Peasant War in Germany, represented the first attempt to write history from a historical materialist perspective.1 In the GDR’s search to construct a viable, Marxist-based historical discipline that was distinct from, and in opposition to, its Western ‘bourgeois’ variant, Engels’ work acquired a special status. However, in the GDR, the Reformation era was more than just a topic of historiographical interest; it can be seen to have constituted an important founda- tion myth for this communist state. Recently, scholars have begun to focus more closely on the cultural significance of politi- cal myths for modern states. While formerly political myths were perceived rather prosaically as fictions, propaganda or simply lies, in the last few years they have been viewed in a more sophis- ticated light.

Jarausch Abstract: »Das Versagen des Antifaschismus: Zur Ironie von Geschichte als Politik in der DDR«. The overthrow of Communism through the “peaceful revolution” during 1989/90 raised the question of what to do with its ideologi- cal justification of “anti-fascism.” Ironically some self-critical GDR intellec- tuals like Christa Wolf had already argued that what had begun as a rigorous effort to repudiate National Socialism had turned into a legitimation of a new SED-dictatorship. Written during the exciting process of German unification, this essay attempted a preliminary assessment of the role of East German histo- rians within the SED-regime: On the one hand their scholarly efforts had be- come more complex and convincing during the 1980s, leading to growing re- cognition from abroad.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis examines German attitudes towards Jews in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, focusing on a dimension of political discourse typically noted for its resistance to antisemitism: Social Democracy. Most scholarship on the dealings of Imperial German society with matters Jewish tends to focus specifically on self-defined antisémites and overt manifestations of antisemitism. In contrast, this study examines how a broader set of prevalent perceptions of (supposedly) Jewish phenomena was articulated by theoretically more sophisticated Social Democrats. Their polemics against antisémites frequently used the term 'antiSemitic' simply to identify their party-political affiliation without necessarily confronting their hostility to Jews, let alone did it imply a concomitant empathy for Jews. While the party-political opposition of Social Democracy against party-political antisemitism remains beyond doubt, a genuine anathematization of anti- Jewish stereotypes was never on the agenda and the ambiguous stance of Franz Mehring (1846- 1919) was in fact quite typical of attitudes prevalent in the party.

FOR THE FUTURE PEOPLE’S STATE German Socialists in Exile, 1878-1890 Research Master History Utrecht University Supervisor Prof. Dr. Jacco Pekelder Second evaluator Dr. Christina Morina Submission 21 June 2019 Daniël Thijs Hendrikse Born 19 March 1995 Student number 4146328 Email [email protected] ‘Man wird nicht umsonst, das heißt, ohne private Ursache, Feldherr oder Anarchist oder Sozialist oder Reaktionär, und alle großen und edlen und schimpflichen Taten, die einigermaßen die Welt verändert haben, sind die Folgen irgendwelcher ganz unbedeutender Ereignisse, von denen wir keine Ahnung haben.’ Joseph Roth 2 Abstract In the years between 1878 and 1890, when Bismarck prohibited socialism in Germany with the so-called Sozialistengesetz, many German socialists went into exile abroad. Even though this was an important, formative period for German socialism, historians have been treating it as a mere intermezzo in the development of socialism rather than a crucial phase. As a result, the international exchange of ideas between the exiled socialists has long been overlooked. Drawing upon a wide array of sources, this thesis studies the transfer and diffusion of ideas. It does so by looking at four exiled Germans – Carl August Schramm, Carl Hirsch, Hermann Schlüter and Clara Zetkin – and three cities in particular – Zürich, Paris and London. Since ideas are highly personal, it is important to take into account the micro histories of the personal lives.

CLAIMS RESOLUTION TRIBUNAL In re Holocaust Victim Assets Litigation Case No. CV96-4849 Certified Denial to Claimant [REDACTED] Claimed Account Owner: Leo Stern1 Claim Number: 500360/RT This Certified Denial is to the claim of [REDACTED] (the “Claimant”) to a Swiss bank account potentially owned by the Claimant’s relative, Leo (Karl) Stern (the “Claimed Account Owner”). All denials are published, but where a claimant has requested confidentiality, as in this case, the names of the claimant, any relatives of the claimant other than the account owner, and the bank have been redacted. Information Provided by the Claimant The Claimant submitted a claim stating that Leo Stern, who was Jewish, resided in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) between 1914 and 1939, when he was deported. The Claimant further stated that Leo Stern could escape from the transport and fled to Lwow, (formerly Poland, later Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, now Lviv, Ukraine) where he later perished. The Claimant further stated that his relative was the owner of a forest in Austria and a lumber mill in Jablunkov, Czechoslovakia. The Claimant also stated that his relative rented an additional lumber mill in Kaschau (Kosice), Czechoslovakia (now Kosice, Slovakia). The CRT notes that the Claimant provided documents which show that his relative resided in Ostrava, that he had a lumber mill in Jablunkov and was the owner of a forest in Austria. The Claimant did not provide any documents which would establish a connection between his relative and Kosice. The CRT’s Investigation The CRT matched the name of Leo (Karl) Stern to the names of all account owners in the Account History Database and identified accounts belonging to individuals whose names match, or are substantially similar to, the name of the Claimed Account Owner.
