ISRAELI CULTURE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC 2015 Yoav Brill: Hora. Queer Film Festival Mezipatra. November 2015. ISRAELI CULTURE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC 2015 Dear friends of Israeli culture, The year 2015 was exceptional in several ways. In April, it has been exactly 25 years since the first visit of Czechoslovak president to Israel: Václav Havel in April 1990 celebrated in this way the freshly renewed diplomatic ties between the two countries. Václav Havel’s legacy, very much valued in Israel, was remembered and relived through a large series of events, from discussions with notable guests to jazz and rock concerts and children workshops. We all had a lot of fun! Also, the Czech city of Pilsen was the European Capital of Culture in 2015. And Israeli culture was a significant part of the programme: in June, the days of Jerusalem expanded from Prague to Pilsen with a wide scale of events from fashion shows and art exhibitions to film screenings and dance performances. Throughout the rest of the year, the Pilsen audience could attend more Israeli events – puppet theatre performances, street music, and much more. The biggest joint exhibition of Czech and Israeli conceptual artists ever took place in the Prague Mekka of contemporary art, MeetFactory. And the established connections are about to develop in 2016, which makes us really happy. We cannot omit to mention dance: it has always been a big part of the Czech-Israeli cultural exchange, but in 2015, it has reached new heights: the living legend Ohad Naharin came to Prague twice within a month to first work with the dancers of National Theater on his choreography Decadance, very successfully staged until now, and then to be present at his Bathseva’s performance at Dance Prague festival gala evening, once again to a massive acclaim.

technical monuments jablonec nad nisou technical monuments Introduction IntroductIon This brochure is based on an on-site survey of the technical monuments and points of interest in the Jizera Mountains tourism region which took place within the framework of the “Jablonec as the Tourism Cen- tre of the Jizera Mountains” project in 2009. The main goal of this brochure is to inform visitors of some of the interesting and publicly accessible sites in the region. The technical monuments and points of interest are described using routes which offer the option of walking and cycle trips, as well as trips by car. The routes not only draw atten- tion to industrial structures built predominantly in the 19th century, but also to points of technical interest such as lookout towers, hydraulic structures, reservoirs, water turbines, technical museums and outdoor museums, windmills and power stations, historical railway lines, mili- tary fortifications and so on. The routes have been proposed in such a way so that visitors can not only become acquainted with the techni- cal attractions, but also with all the natural beauty which the Jizera Mountains tourist region offers. All that remains is to wish everybody, who takes these trips, a pleasant journey. This project has been co-financed by the European Union from the Eu- ropean Fund for Regional Development. technical monuments A technical paradise at the Jizera Mountains A technIcAl pArAdIse At the JIzerA Mountains This “technical paradise” awaits you in Bílý Potok on the River Smědá, which for years has turned the wheels of turbines and powered the machines in a spinning mill at the edge of the Jizera Mountains.

Encouraging a diversity of approach and perspective, the series reflects the Institute’s conviction for a neutral and objective voice, grounded in the exigency of fact. How is governance conducted now? How could it be done better? What defines the law of administration and the management of public affairs, and can their implementation be enhanced? Cathleen M. Giustino JULIA AND HER THINGS: RESTITUTION, RACISM, AND CONNECTIONS IN AND BEYOND THE SUDETENLAND* On two hot summer days during the early Cold War small, little-known gatherings took place within a dusty warehouse in a northern Bohemian town in the Sudeten- land.1 These unlikely meetings in August 1950 happened just outside the city of Liberec, an industrial center known as Reichenberg to the predominantly German- speaking residents who had lived there before the Nazi defeat and most of whom were stripped of citizenship and property before being expelled from Czecho- slovakia after the Second World War. The group that was assembled in the ware- house included a mix of Czech locals and Dutch visitors. Inside the storage building, participants in this east-west gathering examined a hastily organized array of hun- dreds of works of art and antiques.2 The 1950 warehouse meetings occurred because one person in the international group – a woman – was claiming ownership of the paintings, sculptures, porcelain, silver, chairs, commodes, rugs, and other decorative objects stored under its roof. While these interior furnishings had limited value in the eyes of national museum * Beno Hofman and Maarten H. Rijkens in Holland and Inge Schwarz in Germany shared many valuable materials and personal insights with me. Radek Brož and Antonín Rimek at the State District Archive in Liberec and the staff of the National Archive in Prague made available countless boxes of documents over the course of many visits. The families Machač, Sova, Vaněk, and Voráček helped me to appreciate and peek into places in northern Bohe- mia where Julia lived and spent time.
