New Attraction: Water Coaster "Atlantica" SuperSplash Off to new shores: Since March 19th 2005, the visitors of Europa-Park can look forward to a brand-new attraction. "Atlantica? SuperSplash is the name of the new water coaster which set sail for its maiden voyage at the beginning of Europa-Park's 30th anniversary season. A world novelty is one track section with turns and a backwards ride, which was never realised with boats of this size before. The new water coaster was designed by Mack Rides in Waldkirch, it is the first component of the Portuguese themed area, which will be completed in 2006. According to its history as a traditional seafaring nation, the main theming of Portugal is the era of the great Portuguese seafarers and discoverers in the 15th and 16th century, when it was a challenge to conquer the oceans. Go aboard and experience an adventurous ride through the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean! A 16th century Portuguese fortress is the center of the area around the "Atlantica? SuperSplash. Its interior is dominated by "Henry the Seafarer?, who points at the endless Atlantic Ocean in order to challenge everybody to set sail and discover the unnknown. Because once the visitors leave the strong walls of the protective fortress, they are put to a severe test? With a height of 32 meters, the "Atlantica? SuperSplash is Europa-Park's second-highest attraction (the "Silver Star? has a height of 73 meters). In five large boats, each one for up to 16 persons, the visitors are pulled up to the highest point of the water coaster. -

D. (D.M.A.) (J.S.D) Cornell University 2012 This dissertation is an inquiry into spatial aspects of control, resistance and communication in the Dutch East India Company (VOC), as revealed by the architecture of its ships. The architectural type of the retourschip or “homeward bounder” is described and the history of its development, 1602- 1795 is traced, with special attention paid to the period 1740-1783, when the richest records concerning ship design were produced and the ships reached their most standardized forms. The retourschip was one of the highest technological achievements of its day and was used as an emblem for military and mercantile power by the VOC. The ship’s role and meaning as an armature for the VOC’s ideological constructs is examined. Ships also, in Paul Gilroy’s words, constituted "microcultural, micro-political systems," with their own social and spatial orders. These orders are explored, along with their ideological uses as structuring models for VOC society. Changes to the spatial design of the retourschip through the period of the VOC’s operation are linked to changes in the social structure aboard and to changes in the status of VOC mariners, officers and captains. -

Vorwort “Wie kam ich zum Thema?“ Also ich hatte zuerst einige andere Ideen, wie Samsung, was sich aber für meine P+R Arbeit einfach nicht eignete. Man kann einfach nichts Eigenes machen. Freizeitparks sind ein gemeinsames Hobby unserer Familie, ich besuche von klein auf Freizeitparks und war schon sehr oft im Europapark (fast 100 Mal). Der Europapark ist ausserdem mein Lieblingsfreizeitpark. Da ich in den Herbstferien drei Tage in den Europapark ging (schon vor Beginn der Arbeit geplant) und wir die Jahreskarte wieder nehmen wollten, war dieses Thema perfekt. Piracy in Southeast Asia A Historical Comparison Ger Teitler University of Amsterdam and the Royal Netherlands Naval College Abstract The last decade has witnessed in Southeast Asia an upsurge of piracy. Especially worrisome is the growing interconnectedness of this phenomenon with other forms of international crime and with politically motivated insurgencies. There has been no lack of (scholarly) attention for this situation. Less well known is the fact that during the nine- teenth century several colonial governments in Southeast Asia, but especially the Dutch, were confronted with piracy on a very large scale. This article tries to elucidate the present situation by drawing comparisons with the past experiences of the Dutch. Special attention is paid to the process of state formation and to the international context of both piracy and piracy fighting. Introduction In the nineteenth century fighting piracy was no easy task for the Dutch and other colonial governments in the Far East. This is not to say that before that period piracy posed no problems. On the contrary, this phenomenon casts long shadows back- wards in Southeast Asia. It was closely related there to the rivalry between native political communities. These fought each other in constantly changing coalitions, trade and piracy accompanying this pattern as two sides of the same coin. Efforts at enrichment and political enlargement took then this, then that form, while the same held good for the activities of individual seafarers. Specialisation in one of these directions was another possibility, of course, the choice being influenced among other factors by the environment. A state, for instance, that passed through succes- sion troubles offered its neighbours ample opportunities for (political) mischief, making for a situation in which piracy could flourish. -

The Founding of Singapore and the Chinese Kongsis of West Borneo (Ca.1819–1840)
99 The Founding of Singapore and the Chinese Kongsis of West Borneo (ca.1819–1840) Ying-kit CHAN* Abstract Many historians have examined why Singapore failed to be a major trading center before the nineteenth century. This paper revisits the current scholarly literature on the founding of Singapore to make two arguments. First, I argue that we cannot understand the founding of Singapore and its role in the British Second Empire without delineating Singapore’s role as a forest- and marine-goods metropolis in the precolonial Chinese trading networks of Southeast Asia. Second, I try to show how the Chinese kongsis 公司公司 of West Borneo turned Singapore into a forest- and marine-goods metropolis, formed their own political and social institutions, and collectively functioned as a third autonomous pseudostate power alongside the British and the Dutch. This reconceptualization enables us to see the founding of Singapore as a joint enterprise, and not a solely British achievement. Keywords: British Empire, Chinese kongsis, forest and marine goods, Singapore, West Borneo Introduction Britain contested with France for naval mastery in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean in the eighteenth century. At the end of the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763), the main reservoirs of British strength in the Indian Ocean were in Bengal and on the Coromandel Coast. The Seven Years’ War and subsequent wars between the British and French were fought in continental Europe, Canada, the West Indies, India, and the Philippines. From these experiences, the British realized that their economic and military security rested on a continental balance of power and global naval supremacy. -

The History of MACK Rides
225 years MACK Rides in Waldkirch - a chronicle of success: The history of MACK Rides This year, the MACK Rides GmbH in Waldkirch can look back with pride on eight generations and a history of 225 years of business. Today, the company is one of the market leaders for the development and production of amusement park attractions. With its innovative new developments and a customer-oriented ride construction, MACK Rides has influenced the industry like almost no other company. Already back in the 18th century, the workshops in Waldkirch were famous for their skills in the construction of stage coaches and carriages. Especially organ wagons were in great demand in Waldkirch, the hometown of many renowned organ builders. Paul Mack, founder and pioneer, established the production facilities in Waldkirch in 1780. At the end of the 19th century, the first wagon for the transportation of a large organ was built. From then on, the company moved on to the fairground business and started building carousels. By 1915, the MACK company was a preferred supplier of the "Circus Krone?. When the circus business slowed down in the 1920s, MACK discovered the world of fun fairs and rides. In 1921, the first wooden rollercoaster was built. As of 1930, the family business specialised in the construction of saloon caravans for travelling showmen, carousels, ghost trains and rollercoasters. In 1936, the first petrol driven ride was designed in the workshops in Waldkirch. In 1951, MACK built the first wooden bob run and just one year later risked the leap across the Atlantic and entered the US market.
