San Diego HOG Spring Into Summer Ride

Biggs Harley-Davidson

1040 Los Vallecitos Blvd. Suite 113, San Marcos, CA

(800) 4-Harley Director

We are in the middle of another great riding year. Our Activities Committee has done a very nice job of filling our calendar with interesting rides of varying lengths. They have really listened to the chapter and responded to what the membership wants. The results are shown in the popularity of the local rides. And what can I say about the long distance rides? Other chapters are even copying our rides, down to the same routes and hotels. As Bill E says, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” (Well, he might not have actually said that, but I’m sure he would agree!) Our chapter is gaining a reputation for our enthusiasm and our focus on our core mission of riding and having fun. One indicator of our enthusiasm is how we all come out to the large events we put on our calendar. Last month we had the May Ride and the San Diego HOG Spring into Summer Poker Run. Our chapter came out in force and won the chapter challenges at both events.

On a special note, Clint A of the May Ride actually named the May Ride chapter challenge after our own Tom M. From now on the perpetual trophy for that chapter challenge will have Tom’s name at the top. It was so special to me that we took that chapter challenge.

Presentation of May Ride “Tom Mattingly” Challenge Trophy

Speaking of chapter challenges, we have one more big chapter challenge on the horizon. This June 26 is the Sweetwater HOG 4th Annual Reservoir Poker Run. This is a great ride, and typically ends back at their dealership, with food, music and prizes and all of the festivities conducted on the roof of the building! How unique is that? Preregistration for this event will be closed by the time you read this, but by special arrangement, they have extended the cutoff just for us. Thanks to this extension, you can register at our chapter meeting, June 10th at the preregistration rate of $20. Thanks to Sweetwater HOG for accommodating us. See you on the road !

Don A

Assistant Director

Hello Biggs Chapter!

May was a very busy month for our Chapter. In two weekends alone we had six events in five days. On May 21 we had the May Ride and the Costa Mesa Speedway Ride. Then on May 22 we had the SD HOG Spring into Summer Ride. On May 28 we had the Joshua Tree Ride, followed by the Warner Springs Glider Ride on May 29. And on May 30 we had the Memorial Day Ride to Fort Rosecrans. Great job by our Activities Committee, and hopefully there was at least one or two events that captured your interest, and you came out to enjoy with the Biggs family.

Oh, and by the way, Biggs won the Chapter Challenges for the May Ride and the SD HOG Spring into Summer Ride. WhooHoo! We kept our Chapter Challenge win streak alive! The next Chapter Challenge will be our biggest test yet. The Sweetwater HOG Reservoir Run. Both SD HOG and Temecula HOG Directors spoke to Don and me, and they are both vowing to beat Biggs at the Sweetwater event. Are we going to let that happen? I hope not. These events are always a lot of fun, usually taking us on roads that we don’t know or have not ridden a lot. Sweetwater’s event should be a lot of fun, and it would be cool if we could beat both SD and Temecula now that they have vowed to beat us.

I have heard a few comments that a few of our members think we are pushing the Chapter Challenges too hard. So let me give you my thoughts on this (and this is only my opinion and does not mean that I am right). The principles that HOG is founded on are simple: Ride and Have Fun. At these chapter challenge poker runs we ride and we have fun. Like I stated earlier, during these events, we usually ride roads that are less familiar to us. We get to see new sites and scenery. That in itself is a lot of fun. Usually there is a lunch that is provided, and we all know that this chapter has a lot of fun eating. We get to pull poker cards to see if we can win any prizes, and I am sure the winners are having a lot of fun.

By attending these events, we are also supporting our brothers and sisters of the Chapter that is putting on the event, which will hopefully translate into them supporting Biggs Chapter at our Spring into Summer event. And finally what’s really cool is that we get to socialize with other HOG members from other Chapters, possibly making new friends that share the same passion for riding in the process. To me that should be the third HOG principle: Making new friends. So these events do fit within the basic HOG principles, which is why we encourage Biggs members to support these events if you can. And so far the turnout by Biggs members to support these events has been outstanding. If you can make these rides, which in turn helps Biggs win these Chapter Challenges, Great! And if you can’t make these rides, not a problem. It’s your choice. We will never ask anyone to go on a ride they don’t want to do. We’ll just look for you on some of the other 120 rides we do in a year!

If you think my opinion needs adjustment, please shoot me an email at [email protected]. As your servants, the Officers are always open to input from our superiors, which is you, the members.

Till we ride together again my brothers and sisters…..I can’t wait……

Mom’s Apple Pie Ride ROAD CAPTAIN

You have heard the term " Own your own Safety" during our pre-ride briefs. What does it mean? Well, it means you are responsible for the operation of your scooter. Hold yourself accountable for the safe operation when traveling with the HOG Chapter. Do not let the group mentality override your ability to safely control your scooter in turns, at intersections or when maneuvering within the group (i.e. lane changes). Clear your own path, look ahead (SEE) for obstacles.

Now what it does not mean is "Ride your own ride"! You still need to conform and ride within the group policies set forth in the Group Riding Manual. Keep your interval, send signals back and watch your mirrors for any actions behind you. By far the most important is interval. We ride in accordance with MSF guidelines and keep the 2 second interval, to the bike in front of you, when riding in staggered formation. Also remember the 1 second interval to the bike diagonal to you. Keep the 1 second interval to the diagonal bike even though the bike in front of you is greater than 2 seconds.

We keep the formation tight to try to prevent cages from entering the formation. By lengthening the interval you the Sweep in performing his/her duties. We have provisions for those riders who may be uncomfortable in formation riding. Typically we have you ride just behind the lead Road Guard. This allows the Lead to adjust to you.

We want you to enjoy yourselves so help us by letting the Road Guards in charge of your group know so we can adjust the ride.

And if you have any questions, come to Formation-101 Saturday morning after the Chapter Meeting and get a refresher on how we do it and bring your questions.

Until the next ride. Sam B

Black Sheep Greeting

Hi All,

Summer is just around the corner and with it comes our Annual Downed Biker Rally. This year the event will follow the GAR on Saturday July 9th. As a reminder, this Downed Biker Benevolent Fund is administered by Black Sheep FOR The Biggs HOG Chapter. Black Sheep is available to you at any time and for any reason, but if you or someone you know is injured in a motorcycle accident, the injured party may be eligible to receive funds from this account.

So please keep this date open, and plan on joining your extended family at the Formation 101 Class and GAR Ride, then come back to the dealership to enjoy our famous gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, soup and a drink. And the entire $10 food donation goes to the Downed Biker Benevolent Fund. This year we have a special raffle – for a $10 ticket, you have the opportunity to win a week’s vacation at Snow Lake Lodge in Big Bear Lake, summer or winter (see details in the insert below). We will be keeping it simple this year – ride, eat, win a raffle or 50/50, then there will be plenty of time for a RAR. This event is for YOU, so please come out and support the Downed Biker Rally. Hope to see you Saturday July 9th!!

As I write this, we just had the funeral for our dear friend and HOG member Tom M. Many people at the church came up to me afterwards and said they had never seen such a turn out at a funeral there. Even the Deacon at Riverside National Cemetery said he had not seen such a great turnout – especially on such a rainy Tuesday. Seeing over 50 bikes was pretty awesome and a great testament to how Tom has affected this chapter. He will be greatly missed. Whenever we lose someone close to us, it may bring many questions to mind. If you would like someone to talk to, please know Black Sheep is here for you. Look for any Black Sheep patch, or contact me directly.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. Remember – help sup- port YOUR Downed Biker Rally on Saturday July 9th.

Blessings, Ken K ([email protected])

SAFETY JIM’S

It’s been a couple of years since I wrote this article and based on some questions about it from the last chapter meeting, here it is. At the time I wrote it I didn’t expect to put it into practice myself. It became apparent from my experience that the newer electronic ignition, fuel injected bikes will run down to about 9 volts.

What if your Stator or Voltage Regulator fails? Can you still ride it home or to a safe place?

After a recent experience Pat and I had with the loss of the voltage regulator while on vacation, I started to think about the experience. What would we have to do if we did not have a fairly new battery that was fully charged? Fortunately Bill & Rose T were with us and we were able to get 50 miles to a H-D dealer to procure a new battery, which was not the problem. As a side note it can be somewhat unnerving riding with all non-essential electrical equipment turned off and watching the voltmeter steadily approaching 10 volts.

It seems that with the amount of electrical problems in the past year or so on group rides related to stators, voltage regulators and batteries a possible plan of action could be explored. One of the things that I’ve come to realize is that usually there are more than one other rider and their bike around when this occurs. This means that a “buddy” system could be applied to get the faulted bike home, to a place with cell phone coverage, a dealer, or a town with hotels.

Divers know it as a life saving practice - the “buddy” system. Maybe not as dramatic, but those of us that ride have all known a friend whose stator/voltage regulator went out when away from home. In this case, a buddy system can work to get the bike into a town. The assumption in all this is that the buddy bike’s batteries are equivalent in size and capacity.

What is meant by all of this? When your stator/voltage regulator dies and your engine is running, it will continue to run until the battery dies, and it will not, of course, recharge that battery. Then your bike dies and you pull to the side of the road. What to do?

You swap batteries with your buddy! Pull all unnecessary fuses (particularly the headlight fuse if it is daylight) then start your dying bike. Jump-start the bike with the “dead” battery, and then drive away until the new battery dies. The good stator in your buddy's bike will charge, at least partially, that “dead” battery sufficiently so that when it is time to do the swap again you can do it and get the bikes started again. You might have to do this a few times, of course. Naturally, if you are riding in a group of more than two, you can use any of the fully functional bikes to origi- nate the jump-start from.

This will severely tax those batteries, possibly doing damage as a result. But at least in some cases you can get to a town this way. Depending on the quality of those batteries helping, they could develop trouble soon after you do this, so you might have to put a couple of them on your credit card.

Million Mile Monday Begins at Midnight, June 27!

Now entering its fourth year, H.O.G. Million Mile Monday seems to get a little bit bigger and more memorable each year. Three mil- lion. Four million. Five million? Since the inaugural event in 2008, the daily worldwide mileage total has grown each year – with five million miles remaining just out of reach thus far. But it’s not really about the mileage total. It’s about getting “together” around the world and riding with a common objective – on what is often considered the low point of the traditional five-day work week.

Let’s face it … for a lot of people Mondays really suck. And it’s probably the one day of the week when people are least likely to get their motorcycles out and go riding. Million Mile Monday is about taking the worst day of the week and making it the best day of the year.

For 2011, H.O.G. is inviting H.O.G. members to expand the reach of Million Mile Monday by inviting their non-member riding friends – on any brand of motorcycle – along for the ride. The idea is to share the passion we all have for motorcycling and show these unfor- tunate “outsiders” what it means to be a part of the world’s greatest riding community.

On Million Mile Monday, H.O.G. asks members to ride wherever, with whoever, and for whatever reason they can think of. Ride to work, ride to lunch, ride around the block. With friends or by yourself. It doesn’t matter – just ride! This year’s event is scheduled for Monday, June 27. For more information about this popular H.O.G. tradition, log on to members.hog.com. And talk to your chapter officers to find out if any official chapter events are planned for this unforgettable day.

See more of JT’s News on next page -> NEWS FROM JT CONTINUES . . . A TWIN OPPORTUNITY TO WIN

We all have friends who don’t ride – or who ride something other than a Harley. And if you’ve ever thought about how to help those friends learn to share your passion for the world’s greatest motorcycle, here’s a great opportunity.

The Harley Owners Group V-Twin Win sweepstakes offers the chance to win TWO new Harley-Davidson motorcycles – one for you, and one for a non-Harley-riding friend.

To enter, just visit www.h-d.com/vtwinwin and you’ll be asked to provide the e-mail address of the friend you’d like to enter. We’ll send your friend an invitation to enter, and if he or she accepts, you’ll both be entered in the sweepstakes. Your friend will also be invited to receive a free copy of HOG® magazine. You know, to give them an inside look at what the H.O.G. and Harley-Davidson lifestyle is all about. If they decline the invitation, H.O.G. will not add their e-mail to our lists.

“This is a great way to get friends interested in riding a Harley,” says Anne Marie Arroyo, Manager, H.O.G. Strategy and Integration. “If nothing else, it’s a great door-opener, a chance to start a conversation about H.O.G. and the wonderful community of riders it represents. “Not to mention, you could win a brand-new Harley-Davidson® motorcycle!”

For details and to enter the sweepstakes, visit www.h-d.com/vtwinwin. The deadline to enter is July 31, 2011. Winners will be an- nounced in August. H.O.G. TO ROCK WITH IN STURGIS

They’re one of the most legendary rock bands in history. On Wednesday, August 10, none other than Lynyrd Skynyrd will rock the historic Buffalo Chip Campground during the . And H.O.G. members have a special opportunity to purchase advance discount tickets and attend an exclusive pre-concert buffet. VIP parking is also included with your ticket purchase, available only by logging on to members.hog.com.

And that’s not the only reason for H.O.G. members to make a special effort to get to Sturgis this year. Join fellow H.O.G. members on Sunday evening, August 7, for an exclusive 2012 New Model Launch Party. Featuring Harley-Davidson staff, other special guests, hors d’oeuvres, and beverages, the Launch Party offers H.O.G. members and their guests an up-close look at all that’s new for the 2012 model year. “Launch Party guests will have a great opportunity to pick the brains of the some of the key people involved in de- veloping the 2012 lineup of new motorcycles, including engineers, Parts & Accessories staff, and product planning employees,” says Alan Fankhauser, Events Manager for Harley Owners Group. “And I’ll bet it will also be great to talk to a few people who are excited about the concert on Wednesday!”

Both these events are open exclusively to H.O.G. members and their guests. To purchase tickets, log on to members.hog.com. And don’t wait – only a limited supply is available for each event. FAST START, BIG FINISH

Everybody knows Milwaukee is the home of Harley-Davidson. And when it comes to American motor racing, the name “Indianapolis” still wears the crown. This summer, H.O.G. members will have a unique opportunity to experience the best of both on the H.O.G. Hole Shot Tour.

Beginning in Milwaukee on August 24, the Hole Shot Tour will give rally-goers a memorable “insider” experience at Harley-Davidson. Activities include check-in at the historic Harley-Davidson Juneau Avenue Corporate Headquarters, a behind-the-scenes visit to the Harley-Davidson Museum, exclusive tours at the Pilgrim Road Engine Manufacturing Facility, visits to other historic landmarks and more. Following a Thursday evening Riders Meeting, it’s off to the races in Indy the next morning.

One of the tour highlights will take place Friday evening, as rally-goers will have the chance to ride their motorcycles around the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway 2.5-mile “Brickyard” oval. Saturday’s itinerary includes touring the Vance & Hines Motorsports headquarters, taking the Red Bull MotoGP qualifying races at the speedway, and watching the dirt fly as H-D factory riders take to the oval at the AMA Pro Flat Track Races at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Sunday is another big day, with reserved seating in Corner 9 for the Red Bull MotoGP Races, for prime viewing of all the high-speed action on turns 6, 7, 8, and 9. VIP treatment includes exclusive access to the East Chalet Pavilion for lunch and breaks, along with H.O.G.-only parking in the Speedway infield. “In racing, the racer who gets the ‘hole shot’ is the one that gets the best start off the line in racing,” explains Alan Fankhauser, Events Manager for Harley Owners Group. “On this tour, the fast start in Milwaukee is only the beginning. Things get bigger and more exciting every step of the way.”

Registration for this adrenaline-fueled event opens soon. For details and to sign up, log on to members.hog.com. That’s it from JT, for now ... How I Spent my Saturday Vacation By Dave Y “Yak”

Road Guards are required to attend an Experienced Riders Course (ERC) every 3 years to maintain their Road Guard status. Some Road Guards have done other motorcycle training courses in place of ERC. One of these courses is Streetmasters.

Five Chapter Members went to the Streetmasters Course a couple weekends ago and had a great experience while improving our riding skills. We spent all day Saturday at the Willow Springs Raceway in Willow Springs, CA near Palm- dale/Lancaster, CA.

All of us have many years of riding motorcycles and many miles on Harley’s. While discussing the day, back at the hotel and over a cold beer and hot pizza, we all stated that we learned something we did not know before or identified a bad habit that we had picked up over the last 3 years.

Streetmasters covered some basic handling techniques of turning, hard braking, turning from a stop and finally a skills course combining all techniques with turns and figure eights all mixed in together. But the clincher was riding a 1 mile canyon-like course, much like Couser Canyon. We had classroom instruction first, then instructor led laps, followed by student led laps. The instructor ratio was 1 instructor to 4 students.

The overall concept is to

A) stay away from oncoming traffic B) be in the opposite side of your lane from oncoming traffic until you can see through the corner C) KNOW that no oncoming traffic is on or over the double yellow line D) turn into the double yellow and make the corner, AKA a late apex The track was on the side of a hill and had an 11% grade so you had up and down hills, left and right corners and it was exciting. Each lap they had instructors pointing to your entry point on one lap, then the late apex on the next lap, and then the exit point on your next lap. Thereby helping you see the concept while also maneuvering the bike. So we spent 30-40 laps going counter clockwise with instructors pointing out specifics.

THEN comes the graduation laps. Ha, they let you go clockwise on the course alone and as you can imagine it was COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!!! Different direction, different corners from the opposite side that you were used to and NO INSTRUCTORS!!!! They finally had to come out and get me off the course as it was closing.

In summary it was ERC/Ride Like a Pro and Street Cornering all in one class and best of all: none of the instructors had any egos about being an instructor. We have all had one or two of those in our time. Yak

May GAR Get Acquainted Ride

LADIES OF HARLEY … LOH

A HUGE thank you to chapter members Lila & Bryan P for opening up their home for our Siete de Mayo Dinner Ride. We raised $200 for Stacy’s Biker Friends. A great time was had by all. I think one of the highlights after dinner, was a very cool motorcycle piñata. I think what we found out - we have some frustrated baseball players in our midst.

For a good chuckle or two, check out the pictures on the website for May. Thanks again for the awesome turnout.

LOH’s guest speaker for May was my nephew Jason B, I call him firefighter extraordinaire. He is a firefighter/paramedic for the City of Imperial Beach. He also flies with Mercy Air, working as a flight medic. Jason put together a cool presentation; the Do’s and Don’ts of accident scene management.

Our next LOH Dinner Ride is scheduled for June 12th. This ride will be approximately 30 miles, and then arriving at Mimi’s Café in Oceanside. Hope you can come on out and join us. Who knows … a RAR could be in the cards for that evening.

Our July LOH Dinner Ride is going to be a Mystery Ride. Questions/clues to start soon. Let’s just say the destination is located somewhere in Southern Cal.

Something, I hope you all put on your calendars for October 16th … the 14th Annual MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK. Stacy Biker Friends is LOH’s charity for 2011. This 4 mile walk is a non-competitive walk in the fight against breast cancer. The walk takes place at Balboa Park, San Diego in the morning. If you get down to it, on a very basic level - some of us have been personally affected by the loss of someone dear by cancer. The American Cancer Society MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER is a powerful and inspiring event that unites communities to celebrate people who have battled breast cancer, raise awareness about the steps we can take to help prevent, and raise money to find cures and support programs and services for those facing the disease. In 2010 alone, nearly 800,000 walkers across the country collected $60 million to help fight breast cancer. Thanks to the dollars raised by MAKING STRIDES supporters, The American Cancer Society is saving lives and helping more people facing breast cancer celebrate more birthdays.

If you haven’t participated before, this walk is pretty cool. Not only do they shut down a portion of the freeway – so that we can walk on it, but this is a venue where 20 people can “display” their bikes. Mike L and I will have a sign-up sheet available at the next few chapter meetings. We will have room for about 20 bikes, for displaying. Stacy will be one of our guest speakers at an LOH Dinner Meeting in the very near future. I’ll be sure the notification comes out via an eblast or email. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

FYI … always be sure and check the events page for any changes or updates for all rides and events.

See ya on the road ... Rosann MILITARY

Hello Biggs Family,

I wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for your support of our Military Donation Fund. I’ve seen first hand your generosity at each and every Chapter Meeting and it’s truly incredible.

Now, I have another favor to ask you … for all those who have pictures from your military “adventures”, I need your help. I’m hoping you will email pictures to me. I need at least two pictures: (1) a picture from your early days and (2) a picture at the end of your military career or a present day one. Okay, it’s a given that they need to be in good taste, so I know for some of you that probably eliminates half your collection. The pictures will be featured at our Chapter Meetings and for our members to guess “who is this service member”. Please email to me at [email protected].

Again, thank you for continued support. Nancy M
