Ron Martin's Biker's Pocket Guide, Sturgis, SD Motorcycle Rally 2010 The Famous East Coast Biker Bar is NOW IN STURGIS! Tons of Contests (Wet T-Shirt -, Happy Hour Daily 5:00p-6:00p Frozen T-Shirt, Tire Toss, Best Tats, (50 cent draft beer) Beer Belly & More)! *See Schedule of Events Burn Out Pit Open Daily from 11a-11p Always Hot Women & Cold Beer ! Burn Out Contests Live Music Daily from 11:00a – 1:00a Welcome, welcome, welcome to the 70th Sturgis Rally! I'd to thank Broken Spoke Campground for the awesome cover. A little old school – guys flat trackin'. We've put a lot of artwork into this issue to make it a real nice souvenir for you to keep. Well, so much to see and do. Let's start off with Buffalo Chip – Rod and Carol – as always, what a great line-up you have - Ozzie, Bob Dylan – just to mention a few! Look in the book for the back way into the Buffalo Chip. Something for every generation at the Chip! Welcome Rock N' Rev Festival to Sturgis. It's located behind Monkey Rock in the amphitheater. Great line-up of bands. Be sure and check out the entertainment schedule. Broken Spoke has S&S Night, which you'll have to see to believe – the biggest burnout you will ever see! They have a great line-up, too – Eddie Money (16 #1 hits!) will be there. I want to make sure you know about Glencoe, too! From Prevosts to pup-tents, it will be a great camping experience – they know how to crazy party over there! One-Eyed Jacks has the best steaks in town, and some of the hottest bartenders in Sturgis. Across the street we want to welcome Suck Bang Blow, a/k/a SBB, from Myrtle Beach. They are bringing some good old Southern hospitality, big old biker burnouts, and some of the craziest biker games you've ever seen. Just up the road a little is the Side Hack Saloon – adult entertainment for your pleasure. Ladies are welcome, too. Pick up your commemorative Sturgis beer cans as souvenirs. Chris from Cycle Solutions will be on-site at the Monkey Rock and he does Lucas oil changes and makes your bike go really fast (while you wait!!!). Across the street is Full Throttle Saloon – Brett Michaels is playing. Come see the Celebrity Apprentice rock the house – among all his other accolades. Now that's a party. See the schedule for the 4th annual Bike show. The reason Sturgis is in existence is because of the Jackpine Gypsies. I say this every year. Show your support! These guys go up the hill really fast, and come down even faster. It is something to see. Next subject, Tattoos. Sawbones is the one I recommend. There are lot of artists that come to the rally who are fly-by-nights. Sawbones has great artists, a sterile environment and they've been doing it here for 15 years. Stay out of tents, trailers and kitchens. You have to wear it – not them. Oh, don't drink a lot before you get tattooed and remember, you can't give blood for a year. Charities – LegendRides and Kids n' Chrome. Those are the two that I promote. The money goes to the charity and not the administration. There are so many charity rides out there – I want to warn you – be sure where the $$ goes. Some of them are really bad and the money goes in their pocket or outside the USA. Don't just throw that twenty down – there are a lot of con artists out there. The Vore Buffalo Jump shows how the Plains Indians managed to use the landscape to capture Buffalo. It is the site of a current archeological dig and I think you'll find the history pretty interesting. It's worth a stop. Maps – this year we put in a lot of maps that were hand drawn by our awesome illustrator, Thunder. He worked really hard on making these maps really cool, and I have to say this – they are NOT drawn to scale! They are pretty damn close and will get you where you want to go. I want to thank Steve for coming on board with us and helping with sales. Steve did a great job putting together several of the maps with Thunder. Thanks to Linda for her magic fingers, Jerry for putting me together, Matt and Becky at No Name City, Joe and Mel for feeding me, Matt for putting me online, and Frank and Jane for getting me out on time and delivered. You’all are the best. Tell the Advertisers that you saw them in the Pocket Guide because we are advertiser supported. And don’t forget - We are available online and available prior to the Rally so you can see what is happening before you leave your home to come here. You can actually plan on what you want to do Where the Girls Are! during your stay. If you want to take advantage of an excellent opportunity to get your name out – give us a call at 386-323-9955 and we will put an advertising Buffet BReakfaSt, fuLL Lunch & DInneR package together that fits your budget and your needs. Best steaks in town!! In closing - my usual speech. Don’t be draggin’ revving your pipes, cause you’ll get a ticket and free room and board. If you’ve had too much to Full Liquor & Every Domestic/Import Beer you can think of! drink, park your bike and get a taxi home. Or – take “Da Bus.” (See Schedule of Events for Full Event Details) Think before you drink. Don’t leave your drinks unattended. It’s not the bartenders job to babysit your drinks. Take care of your bartenders and servers. They work real hard to make your vacation unforgettable. Have a safe Rally. Remember – rubber side down, shiny side up. 1304 Main Street • Sturgis, SD • (605) 423-4120 PS - Lots of love to Ronnie and Robin. • Interesting Things to Do in South Dakota
Interesting Things to Do In South Dakota A) Western South Dakota: 1) Black Hills: Visit the awe-inspiring Mount Rushmore or view the magnificent carving of Crazy Horse. Take a trip through Custer State Park, in the heart of the Black Hills (where the buffalo roam). Or experience Sturgis, where motorcycles rule during August, time of the world famous Sturgis motorcycle rally. Other attractions may include a drive through Needles Highway, a visit to the natural cave wonders like Wind Cave (where the largest group of buffalo roam free), Jewel Cave (the third largest cave in the world), or Rushmore Cave, or a trip to Bear Country, an intriguing wildlife park getaway. Approximately 380 miles from Beresford. 2) Wall Drug: On your way to the west, no one can resist stopping at Wall Drug, one of the most famous stops in the U.S. This drug store was founded in 1931 and was made famous by offering free ice water to travelers. Today it typically serves 20,000 guests per day and has restaurants, gift shops, clothing stores and more. If you are looking for that perfect souvenir, you can probably find it here! Approximately 325 miles from Beresford. 3) Badlands: Drive through the Badlands National Park Scenic Byway for amazing views of rock formations and learn of the gangsters who hid out here – many of which got lost in the maze of rock and never made it out. The region of savage erosion, where 35 million years of wind and water have created 244,000 acres of strange and beautiful spires, buttes, and canyons.

  • Full Investigations and Windshield Surveys
Appendix 2: Full Investigations and Windshield Surveys During Phase III of the update project, the RCHPC sponsored the creation of nine focused investigations that explored specific aspects of Rapid City’s history. Each essay is available in full below. Each includes samples of historical documentation from newspapers and local archives as well as photographs of buildings and spaces relevant to each topic that still exist in Rapid City. The Ridgeline and the Creek: Landscape and Memory in Rapid City The Black Hills formed when a large, oblong section of igneous rock lifted through the earth’s mantle some 65 million years ago, breaking through the limestone crust to expose the large, stone center of the Hills. In and around this central ring, forests thick with ponderosa pines, blue spruce, and cedar trees cropped up. They intersperse in meadows with prairie grasses and shrubs and are home to an array of animals including deer, elk, beavers, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, rabbits, and more. Bison, grizzly bears, wolves, mountain lions, and coyote once inhabited the vast prairies surrounding the Black Hills. Most of the large predators and most of the bison were killed off or pushed out as Euro-Americans displaced early Indigenous inhabitants. Rapid City grew up at the vertex of water and stone. A long, narrow ridgeline juts from south to north. Residents can look up at the ridge from any side of town or peer down over the vast distance visible from Skyline Drive or Highway 16. The ridge forms the backbone of the Rapid City landscape and includes two main parts from south the north: Hangman’s Hill, which is traversed by Skyline Drive, and Cowboy Hill, which begins immediately north of Rapid Creek.

Copyright © 1998 by the South Dakota State Historical Society. All Rights Reserved. A South Dakota Rendezvous: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Races Carlton L. Bonilla The fur trappers of the early nineteenth century were hardy men, spending months isolated from the civilized world. Each summer, however, these aigged individuals gathered at a designated location to trade pelts, garner sup- plies, and celebrate. Their unique gatherings, known as ren- dezvous, were spectacular events, bringing together trap- pers from throughout the Rocky Mountain West. Today, a new breed of frontiersman has appeared, a modern-day "mountain man" who has replaced tlie pinto of the trapper with die "iron horse of Milwaukee"—the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Their gathering takes place each year in Sturgis, South Dakota, with all the grandeur and excitement of the original assemblies. Known variously as the Black Hills Motor Classic, Sturgis Rally and Races, or simply, "Sturgis," the event is the rendezvous of the twentieth century, bring- ing together people from all over the world for cama- raderie, commerce, and entertainment. The traditional rendezvous began in .1825, when William H. Ashley, a fitr-trade entrepreneur from Saint Louis, took a supply train to the central Rockies after broadcasting the time and place of arrival to trappers in the mountains for months beforehand. Upon reaching his destination, Ash- ley provided the trappers with a year's worth of supplies Copyright © 1998 by the South Dakota State Historical Society.
