Ten minutes later, Adams said the official crew will start jumping. One jumper will pop the American flag out at 2,000 feet, when an a capella choir consist- ing of service men and women from throughout the country will sing the National Anthem. WHEN A SCREW WAS A SCREW Country giant Tim McGraw brings act to Buffalo Chip

BY JUSTIN BRAKE Buffalo Chip Gazette BUFFALO CHIP CAMPGROUND — Country music superstar Tim McGraw will likely be one of the biggest attractions at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this summer. Almost a year after the release of his latest album, Live Like You Were Dying, McGraw still dominates the country music charts. After all the man, who has sold more than 33 million records worldwide, feels he is on top of the world. "We’re in a great place in our career," says McGraw of he and his band mates. "Things just seem to keep getting better. Five years ago I figured we were at the top of our game and that was the best it was going to get, but with every album it seems to keep on building on itself." The 38-year-old singer of such hits as "I Like It, I Love It," "Don’t Take the Girl," "For a Little While," "Indian Outlaw," and the popular duet with wife and country diva Faith Hill "It’s Your Love," will bring his hugely successful touring show to The Buffalo Chip Campground in Sturgis Aug. 7. The newer material McGraw and his band, The Dancehall Doctors, will showcase this summer was written and recorded at an emotional time in the singer’s life, shortly after his father, former New York Mets pitcher Frank "Tug" McGraw, died of brain cancer early last year. "We were rehearsing when Tug was sick," explains McGraw, "and he died at the beginning of January. We were in the studio at the end of January and we recorded this around 11 or 12 at night and everybody just poured a lot of heart and soul into it," he said. Despite his father’s death, McGraw is forging forward and sharing his music with fans around the world, in many instances breaking country music records for concert attendance. His 2002 NBC Live Concert Special ranked higher than specials by U2 and Paul McCartney. Last year he made his major motion picture debut in the football movie Friday Night Lights and was widely acclaimed by movie critics for his performance. His nine albums to date have spawned 25 number one singles. He has earned Country Music Association (CMA), Grammy and People’s Choice awards. When Garth Brooks’ reign as King of Country Music came to an end someone else had to fill his boots. Single-handedly McGraw stepped up to the plate and, with no end to his continuing success in sight, will likely hold this title for years to come. McGraw will perform at the Buffalo Chip Campground on Sunday, Aug. 7 at 10:30 p.m.

We’re on our bikes, out there on the roads enjoying Sturgis. Going there with Twisted Sister and going there with VH1 Classic is just really an excuse to go out to Sturgis. So we’ll see you out there on the road for the days leading up to the gig and we hope you will hang around and experience it with us.

Additionally, with an event such as Sturgis that keeps growing larger every year, Lichter said there is always something new and exciting to experience and photograph. Whether it is a new ride that he discovered on the trip, or a group of bikers who are experiencing the Rally for the first time, Lichter said he always looks forward to taking the 430 mile ride to Sturgis from his home in Boulder, Colo. But no Sturgis experience, Lichter said, is ever as amazing as his first one. "My first Sturgis is my most memorable Sturgis," he said. "That may be true for most people. There is just something that happens when you go to a Rally like that for the first time. I think it was my first big Rally. I call it the "wow" factor. You come to a place like that and you see a few thousand motorcycles in a line and you are just in awe. "I have seen many people say ‘it’s the same old thing.’ That’s one thing I don’t say about Sturgis. I don’t say it’s the same old thing because what I do believe is that every year it is so big and there is so much to see and do there, I haven’t in 25 years (and I hope I never do) say ‘it’s the same old thing.” But new things at the Rally don’t just come from new T-shirts or new concert venues, Lichter said. Instead, bikers and photographers alike often need to search for the differences from Rally to Rally. "Hopefully it is new roads, new places, or new ways of feeling and seeing the world, which I always get in Sturgis," Lichter said. In conjunction with this year’s 65th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Lichter is also putting together a motorcycle art show at the Journey Museum in Rapid City. The show, entitled "Speed Demons: Race Inspired Motorcycle Art," will feature artwork from more than 11 artists, as well as custom motorcycles by more than 19 artists, including the original 322 mph record breaking Streamliner. “What separates putting bikes in a museum from a regular bike show to me is there is more thought and direction behind it,” Lichter said. “Mostly they are custom bikes that had the influ- ence of speed and racing on their design from some famous bike builders in the bike building community." "Speed Demons: Race Inspired Motorcycle Art" will open to the public on Saturday, Aug. 6 and will remain open through Saturday, Aug. 13. The museum is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Aug. 6-13. Public reception with refreshments, at which many of the artists and motorcycle builders will be present, will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. The museum is located in Rapid City at 222 New York, two blocks east of the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn and the Civic Center where Harley-Davidson is headquartered.

The evidence is still there for those that leave the road to look for it. ENCOUNTERDevil’s Tower ride offers variety ofTHE landscape TOWER BY MITCH MOE Buffalo Chip Gazette DEVIL’S TOWER, Wyo. — Having lived in the Black Hills for four years now, I’m convinced more than ever that this is one of the top riding locations in the USA. Combine good roads, (many twisties), great scenery, and low population to give you fan- tastic riding year round. "Year round?" you ask. You may not believe this but we have a climate not much different to Denver, a six-hour ride south. It’s very different from the tundra-like east side of our fair state in the winter. The Chinook winds in winter give us many windows of riding opportunity. My personal goal is to ride at least once each month and there are many winter months that only my lack of spare time, not the weather, keeps me off the roads. Another reason we are set apart from many areas of the nation is the variety of nature displayed in a relatively small area. From Ponderosa Pine covered hills, you can swoop through grassy meadows along cold, clear creeks and end up in dry, high prairie or the brick red hills of Wyoming. This ride will show you a little of what I’m talking about. From Spearfish we’ll take Interstate 90 west, saying goodbye to Crow Peak and the South Dakota Black Hills. In a few miles will be the first chance to buy lower priced Wyoming gas. Getting off the Beulah exit, we head through town past Sand Creek Trading Post, the little steakhouse that serves up a great steak with its local ranch ambiance. Before we get to Country Road 111, watch to your left for a dirt turnoff with small parking area. The covered sign will explain that we are overlooking the large sinkhole known as the Vore Buffalo Jump. This unexpected hole was used by previous popu- lations to their advantage by stampeding buffalo into the hole and to their death. Several archeologists have excavated areas on the bottom to learn more about those ancient times. Continuing along the frontage road to Sundance you’ll take in pris- tine ranches and rolling hills that lead to the Bear Lodge Mountains. Follow the signs in Sundance leading you to Devil’s Tower. The next 30 miles to the Tower will show the RIDE variety of natural beauty you’ll find in the Bear Lodge. If you're in for a walk, take the hiking path around the of the day base of the Tower for great views of rock climbers and surrounding vistas. The interpretive center has some interesting information on what is on the Tower top. When you are ready to leave, take a left on County Road 34. Some of you may remember that this is the corner where Roger Wolf bent over to kiss the tank of his VTX to allow a frightened white tail doe to leap over him at about 40 mph. The first of several small Wyoming towns we’ll go through is Hulett. Be sure to visit the Rogue’s Gallery on the corner. Bob Coronado, the western artist in residence, will be pleased to show you his work along with various antique western artifacts. County Road 34 is a favorite with local riders and it won’t take long to see why. Arriving at Belle Fourche you have the option of following 34 to Whitewood or turning south on Highway 85 to Spearfish. The entire loop to Spearfish is about 110 miles and takes you through an ever-changing landscape. Be sure to include this ride on your calendar this year. Ride all day, party all night at The Chip!
