Napoleon III's Transformation of the Bois De Boulogne
From place to espace: Napoleon III's transformation of the Bois de Boulogne Richard S. Hopkins Arizona State University At its inauguration in 1854, the newly redesigned Bois de Boulogne existed only as an arrangement of paths and greenery, laid out in the naturalistic and popular English style of garden design. As such, the Bois de Boulogne was little more than a site. Theorist Michel de Certeau articulated the difference between a site and a space, using the example of the city to outline the means by which practices change a site or a place (the visible and tangible) into a space or an espace (the invisible and experiential). He claimed, "Spatial practices in fact secretly structure the determining conditions of social life."1 Just as practices transformed de Certeau's city, so usage altered the visible forms of the park. In their carriages and crinolines, the park visitors of the Second Empire imbued the site with meaning and subtext through activity. Thus, over a period of more than a decade, the Bois de Boulogne metamorphosed into the unique and recognizable Le Bois of the Second Empire. Just as de Certeau's theory prescribed, the practices of the parkgoers turned this simple design into a social and cultural institution which became the epicenter of Parisian society during the halcyon days of the Second Empire. ABSTRACT Title of Document: LABOR IN THE CAULDRON OF PROGRESS: JULES DALOU, THE INCONSTANT WORKER, AND PARIS’S MEMORIAL LANDSCAPE Andrew Eschelbacher, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Directed By: Professor June Hargrove, Department of Art History and Archaeology French populist identity and changing notions of masculinity converge in the monument projects of Jules Dalou, revealing the fissures in the Third Republic’s attempts to unify the nation. Treating the worker as France’s representative man, Dalou intervened in a memorial sphere where the male laborer’s ambiguous position manifested the effects of profound cultural traumas stemming from the année terrible and the development of new social and economic structures. This dissertation investigates how Dalou, the leading public sculptor of the early Third Republic, consistently altered his depictions of the worker as he pursued a monumental idiom and representation of the masculine icon appropriate for Modernity. The formal and thematic inconsistencies that resulted reveal the sculptor’s efforts to navigate the ruptures between social traditions and emergent political, scientific, and industrial values that rendered the fin-de-siècle memorial environment a cauldron in which the era’s conflicting social dogmas and cultural doctrines forged new amalgams. Manifesting the complicated relationships between public art, modern aesthetics, and the formation of new national mores, these projects illustrate the social angst of the last decades of the nineteenth century and anticipate the visual language -

Hydrology of Bois de Boulogne Hydrology and the Imperial Vision of Bois de Boulogne By KEVIN COFFEE SUMMARY: Bois de Boulogne was a key urban design effort of Second Empire France. This essay surveys the landscape of the park with particular attention to water; social practices that engendered the use of water, and social practices which water enabled. The hydrology of the site – the grand lake, streams, and waterfalls – is a statement and demonstration of imperial mastery and sensibility. Nearly half of the project budget was devoted to hydraulics and, in the opening years, more than 15% of the municipal water supply was diverted to the park; all of which supported a status- laden array of features attractive to elites of the Second Empire and Third Republic. keywords: landscape; water; urban parks; imperialism; Paris. ‘We must have a stream here … to give life to this arid promenade’ – Louis Napoleon, 1848.1 Landscapes, and particularly urban landscapes, are tracings of social practices compressed by time and in space. Ingold describes them as taskscapes collapsed into arrays of features.2 The present survey probes feature compression as a result of practices joined to class, gender and ethnic dispositions, through which many modern cities have emerged or redefined themselves. Modernity requires destruction in order to create its habitus3 and ‘eternal truths.’4 Consequently, as Bender notes, human-landscape relationships are always in-progress and the untidy products of conflict and unease.5 Archaeology assumes the task of untangling and deciphering untidy past practices of production, signification and use. This essay surveys the built encodings that re-made Bois de Boulogne as a public park and the loci of imperial prestige and social solidarity. -

Their diverse representations confirm the changing character and history of gardens from the privileged courts of the Villa d’Este at Tivoli and Versailles to the democratic spaces of New York ACity’s Central Park and San Francisco’s newly reconfigured Crissy Field. The Changing Garden: Four Centuries of European and American Art brings together close to two hundred prints, drawings, photographs, and paintings of gardens. With a subject so rich and visual evidence so varied, inevitably any selection cannot include all that one might wish. This catalogue emphasizes the innovative sequential con- tributions made in Italy, France, Britain, and the United States. There are relatively few drawings included by garden designers, because this is not an examination of the practi- calities of design. The present paper adds to this growing body of literature by focusing on the construction of a key space of the French Second Empire (1852Á 1870), the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in the newly created 19th arrondissement in Paris. The paper argues that the nexus between culture and nature Á what has been described most fittingly as ‘social nature’ in the literature Á can profitably be approached through the lenses afforded by a reformulated concept of labour.
