CORRELATION BEWEEN THE LATE PRECAMBRIAN OLDER SANDSTONE SERIES OF THE VARANGERFJORD AND TANAFJORD AREAS PKELIMINARY REPORT by Signe-Line Røe1 ) Abstract. Sedimentary rocks belonging to the late Precambrian Older Sandstone Series (over lain unconformably by the Eo-Cambrian—Lower Cambrian Vestertana Group) are described from the Vadsø—Komagelven area on the northern side of Varanger- fjord. The c. 1300 m thick Varangerfjord Older Sandstone Series succession is divided into trwelve informal members. A correlation of the upper c. 1000 m of this succession with the late Precambrian Tanafjord Group is then presented. Finally the regional discordance present between the Older Sandstone Series and the Vestertana Group is briefly mentioned. Introduction. The area investigated is situated on the northern side of Varanger fjord, East Finnmark, between longitudes 29° 38' and 30° 20' east and latitudes 70° 04' and 70° 18' north. For mapping purposes, 1:50 000 AMS topographical maps were used as aerial photographs were not available. The mapped area covers approximately 450 sq. km. Good exposure is, in general, restricted to the coastal section and to the inland valleys. x ) Student, University of Bergen. The geological map presented with this paper does, however, include a tract of ground mapped by Siedlecka & Siedlecki in 1968, that of the Kjøltindene-Grythaugen—Holmfjellet area. Pharmacists Serving Under War Conditions in Northern Norway
PHARMACISTS SERVING UNDER WAR CONDITIONS IN NORTHERN NORWAY Klevstrand, Rolf 2609 Lillehammer, Norway This is a tale of a few pharmacists in three small towns in the northernmost part of Europe during World War Two. The towns were partly destroyed by air raids. This is of course only a small part of the long tale of sufferings during the war. A map of the Northern part of Scandinavia will show the position of the area (Fig. 1). On the map the counties of Norway are marked with different colours, Finnmark, the northernmost in light blue. Fig. 1 Like the rest of Norway Finnmark was occupied by German forces in 1940. When Germany attacked the Soviet Union in June 1941, it became part of an important war zone. The next Fig 2 map (Fig. 2) shows the short distances from the towns Vardø, Vadsø, and Kirkenes to Russia. There were German garrisons in each of them, the largest one in Kirkenes which at times had ten times as many soldiers as the local population. “Festung Kirkenes” was an important supply centre for the forces at the front in northern Russia. This made it an important target for Russian bombers. The town had not less than 328 air raids during the war. Each of the towns had one pharmacy, but there was a shortage of trained pharmacists. In 1940 the government issued a decree concerning the duty to serve for medical personnel. In accordance with this, two recently graduated male pharmacists were ordered to work in the pharmacies of Kirkenes and Vadsø from the beginning of 1944. -

Opening of the meeting Chair of the Subgroup Anna Kuhmonen opened the meeting and introduced the agenda. The meeting started with a round of introductions. The list of participants can be found at the end of this document. Ilona Grekelä acts as secretary and writes the minutes. 2. Adoption of the minutes from the previous meeting The Minutes from the previous meeting were adopted. The annex 1 to the SNW work programme 2020-2022 Project list has been updated. This document was delivered to the subgroup ahead of the meeting. New updates are welcome in the future as well to the email addresses: [email protected] and [email protected]. Always before the meeting SNW’s members will get the updated project list. 3. Suggestion on Biodiversity commitment from the Barents Region Ms. Henna Haapala, Ministry of the Environment of Finland (presentation) WGE chair Ms. Henna Haapala presented a suggestion for a joint voluntary commitment to protect biodiversity, that could be given under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Haapala noted that the Barents region has unique and special ecosystems and already long experience of cross-border initiatives to protect it. The CBD has invited stakeholders ranging from public and private organizations to individuals to give voluntary commitments. Link to CBD is especially topical now, as the Aichi targets are expiring in 2020 and a new global biodiversity framework is being negotiated. The voluntary commitment from the Barents region is suggested to focus on freshwater ecosystems primarily in the river catchment areas that cross either international borders or borders between regions/counties/oblasts. -

ISSN 0029-196X. The late Precambrian Ekkerøy Formation of east Finnmark occurs at the top of the Vadsø Group and extends throughout the Tanafjorden-Varangerfjorden region. It consists of a uniform vertical and lateral facies pattern, in which four facies characteristically form part of a large-scale coarsening upward, marine- dominated regressive sequence. Lateral facies and thickness variations between inner Varanger halvøya (12�190 m thick) and Varangerfjorden (15-35 m thick) are the product of both primary depositional thickness variations and a gentle, southerly dipping unconforrnity at the base of the overlying Grønnes Formation. The transgression at the base of the Grønnes Formation (basal Tanafjord Group) marked a major change in depositional conditions from the fluvially-dominated Vadsø Group below to the shallow marine-dominated Tanafjord Group above. This junction is the most distinctive lithostratigraphic horizon in an otherwise conformable 2,000 m thick, clastic-dominated succession. H. D. Bird report for the Varanger Peninsula, Norway, 7-13 March 2013 Authors: Gitte Kruse Allan Kruse Aoi Bringsøe Henrik Bringsøe – DOF Køge (Danish Ornithological Society, Køge regional group) Photos: Henrik Bringsøe Introduction We had three main reasons for going to the Varanger Peninsula in the far north-east of Norway in March 2013. We wished to see the: King Eider Steller’s Eider Northern lights (or aurora borealis) The two ducks and several other species will winter at Varanger which is always ice-free because of the warm water moves of the Gulf Stream. The ice-free conditions attract ducks from Siberia and other north-eastern areas to spend the winter there. For our journey we chose a period of the very early phase of the new moon (7%). The moon was only visible at daytime which meant that the nights were as dark as possible. As it was close to the equinox, the days were not too short (sunrise at 5:50, sunset at 16:35). Other bird groups were also given high priority, i.e. gulls, eagles and tits. Had we made our journey in April it would not have been possible to see King Eider although there would be less snow in April and it would be easier to get around. Gitte and Allan were responsible for the overall travel plans as they had visited Varanger in June 2010 and gained valuable experience. They booked accommodation at Mr. Øyvind Artnzen in Vadsø in September 2012 and bought flight tickets to Kirkenes. For their homeward journey they chose the coastal service Hurtigruten from Kirkenes to Tromsø and then a flight to Copenhagen. -

NEWS RELEASE ______________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Tschudi Group Divests Sydvaranger to Tacora Resources Inc. OSLO, NORWAY, January 14, 2021 The Tschudi Group today announced that it has completed the sale of Sydvaranger Mining AS and its subsidiaries -Varanger, Norway, to Tacora Resources Inc -based iron ore mining and mineral processing company focused on high-grad iron ore commodities. Tacora recommenced operations after five years closure in June 2019 at the Scully Mine, a 6 million tonne per year iron ore concentrate producer, after its acquisition of the mine in 2017. Sydvaranger operated from 1910 to 1997, and then from 2009 to 2015 producing high grade iron ore concentrate, with an iron content of 68%, for pelletizing operations. The Tschudi Group, a Norwegian shipping and logistics company, has been involved with the Sydvaranger Mine since 2006. In 2016, the Tschudi Group re-acquired the Sydvaranger assets and has since focused its activities on completing a feasibility study and preparing ore concentrate has significant environmental and cost benefits for steel producers and pelletizing operations, including increased blast furnace productivity, reduced slag volumes, lower CO2 emissions per tonne of steel produced and reduced energy requirements for pelletizing, amongst others. The recent Definitive Feasibility Study confirmed a potential for a 4 million tonne pear year iron ore concentrate production. welcome Tacora as the new owners of Sydvaranger. Since 2016, the Tschudi Group has sought to provide Sydvaranger with the financial and operational capabilities to enable a restart of the mining operations. By introducing Orion Mine Finance as a financial partner in 2018 and by now combining Sydvaranger with the operationally experienced Tacora team, we believe Sydvaranger is in an excellent position to succeed with a restart. -

The Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) Your ref Our ref Date 18/2098-13 27 February 2019 The Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) – Norway's contribution to the report focusing on recognition, reparation and reconciliation With reference to the letter of 20th November 2018 from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights where we were invited to contribute to the report of the Expert Mechanism on recognition, reparation and reconciliation initiatives in the last 10 years. Development of the Norwegian Sami policy For centuries, the goal of Norwegian Sami policy was to assimilate the Sami into the Norwegian population. For instance Sami language was banned in schools. In 1997 the King, on behalf of the Norwegian Government, gave an official apology to the Sami people for the unjust treatment and assimilation policies. The Sami policy in Norway today is based on the recognition that the state of Norway was established on the territory of two peoples – the Norwegians and the Sami – and that both these peoples have the same right to develop their culture and language. Legislation and programmes have been established to strengthen Sami languages, culture, industries and society. As examples we will highlight the establishment of the Sámediggi (the Sami parliament in Norway) in 1989, the Procedures for Consultations between the State Authorities and Sámediggi of 11 May 2005 and the Sami Act. More information about these policies can be found in Norway's reports on the implementation of the ILO Convention No. 169 and relevant UN Conventions. -

Konsekvensutredning – Reiseliv - Varangerhalvøya Sammendrag I forbindelse med verneplanarbeidet for Varangerhalvøya nasjonalpark har Fylkesmannen i Finnmark satt i gang et konsekvensutredningsprogram. Denne rapporten omhandler konsekvenser av nasjonalpark for reiselivsnæringen. Reiselivet i regionen Nesseby, Vadsø, Vardø og Båtsfjord er marginalt og utgjør ingen stor næring. Kjerneproduktet i reiselivet er natur- og kultur, med hovedvekt på særegent landskap og unikt fugleliv. Generelt har reiselivet på Varangerhalvøya, spesielt i Vadsø og Vardø-området, hatt en positiv utvikling de siste 3-4 år. -

Beobachtungen zur Küstenvegetation der Varanger Halbinsel (Nord-Norwegen) Von Dietbert Thannheiser • Herrn Prof. Dr. Rolf Nordhagen zum 80, Geburtstag Zusammenfassung: Auf der Varanger-Halbinsel treten arktische Strandpflanzengesellschaften noch relativ häufig auf. Interessante floristische Vorkommen sind /vttiplex kuzenevae, A. lapponica und Cakile edentula. In dieser Arbeit wird versucht, das Vorkommen und die Verbreitung von halo-nitrophilen Strandpflanzen gesellschaften sowie die Veränderung während der letzten 35 Jahre zu beschreiben. Sechs Zonen (Initial phase von Puccinelliclum phryganodis arcticuin, Puccinellielum pbrvqanoais tucticum , Caricetum subsp attiacene, Puccinellictum coarcuitae, Festuceto~C(Irjcetum glorcosae und Potentilla eqeaii ~ Zone) konn ten behandelt werden. Auf dem Sand- und Kiesstrand sind eine Honckenya-Mertensia-Zone sowie zwei Spül• s aumqes e llsch af ten (Polygonetum raii norvegici und Atriplicetum lapponicac) untersucht worden. Die Ent wicklung der Vegetation auf den Stranddünen führt zu Elymo-Festucetum arenariae subarclicum, die in zwei Subassoziationen (einschl. 5 Varianten) vorkommt. Summary: On the Varanger Peninsula, northern Norway, arctic sea shore plant communities are relatively frequent. Atriplex kuzenevae, A. lapponica arid Catci!e eclentula are among th e floristically interesting spedes. In the peper, an effort is made to c!escribe tb e habttat of halo-nitrophtlous senshore communities as weIl as the changes which have taken p lece in th e ir distribution during the last 35 years. 6 different zones (initial p h as e of Puccinellielum phryganoclis arclicum, Puccinellietwn phryganodis arclicum, Caricelum subspaUwceae, Puccinellietuin coarctatoe, Festuceto-Caricetum qlaieosae and Potentilla egedii ~ zone) could be dealt with. In addition, on the send and gravel beaeh a Honch:enya-Mertensia-zone end 2 foreshore corn munlti es (Polygonctum reut norveqict and Atriplicclum lapponiccw) could be investigated.
