The op- ponents of incorporation have countered that immediate incorporation will in no way im- prove the quality or level of service offered by the county and, in fact, result in a possible $100 per year increase in the taxes of the aver- age homeowner in Irvine. Furthermore, many of these people feel that although incorporation may "liberate" Irvine from the county and San- ta Ana, it may also effectively deliver the fledg- ing city into the hands of the Irvine Company. The Orange County governmenthas currently been taking a cautious attitude towards new de- velopmentin the county, apolicy has led tomuch conflict with the Irvine Company. Many oppo- nents of incorporation feel the creation of an Irvinecity government maylead to amuch more rapid development of the Irvirvine Ranch than that which would have occured under the county government. What these people really seem to be saying is that they fear the IrvineCompany will dominate any Irvine city government and that this domi- nation would lead to rapid development, high taxes, etc. This isa very interestingquestion and it may very well turn out tobe thecentral issue of the election campaign for the five councilman seats. Voters in the December 21st election will also select fivecity councilmen whether they voteyes or no on incorporation election. Theyrange from former CCI incorporation activities, former incorporation opponents, a UCI administrator, and professor three UCI students, and various other local homeowners. Last week, twenty of these candidates showed up for a "Meet the Candidates Night" held in the clubhouse of an Irvine Ranch tract by IrvineTo- morrow, a homeowner's group that questioned incorporation and has reservations about the master plan. Find An Agent Look for a licensed real estate agent who is knowledgeable about the neighborhoods you’re considering and is an expert in the process. 2. Get Pre-Approved Before beginning your search, you should get pre-approved by a mortgage banker for a loan (unless you are all-cash buyer). Your Compass Agent can connect you with a trusted mortgage banker to determine your ultimate buying power. 3. View Properties Attending viewings and open houses spanning a range of areas and property types. Work with your agent to narrow down your search. 4. Drummond (2002a; 2005; 2010) has found that men will use sport and health-related sports acts to conceal these concerns from others. Accordingly, men’s body dissatisfactions are documented less frequently because the practices drawn upon to conceal them are perceived as routine forms of masculine behaviour. Rugby union is one of the most popular sports played by young men in England. Historically, the male rugby player is culturally perceived as strong, tough and unemotionally articulate. Existing research draws attention to health issues, such as performance stress and injury that arise through participation in this sport. Research also shows that rugby union players are likely to experience concerns about gaining weight, yet these are disguised within the requirements of training for the sport. Although, there are studies that examine the constitution of masculinities, the experience of pain and injury and career transitions among rugby union players there are no studies, as yet, that examine how rugby union men experience body concerns and manage these experiences through their sport.

Desiring Dexter: The pangs and pleasures of serial killer body technique Author Green, Stephanie Published 2012 Journal Title Continuum DOI https://doi.org/10.1080/10304312.2012.698037 Copyright Statement © 2012 Taylor & Francis. Downloaded from http://hdl.handle.net/10072/48836 Griffith Research Online https://research-repository.griffith.edu.au Desiring Dexter: the pangs and pleasures of serial killer body technique Stephanie Green1 School of Humanities, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia Abstract The television series Dexter uses the figure of appealing monstrosity to unfold troubled relationships between corporeality, spectatorship and desire. Through a plastic-wrapped display of body horror, lightly veiled by suburban romance, Dexter turns its audience on to the consuming sensations of blood, death and dismemberment while simultaneously alluding to its own narrative and ethical contradictions. The excitations of Dexter are thus encapsulated within a tension between form and content as ambivalent and eroticised desire; both for heroic transgression and narrative resolution. Arguably, however, it is Dexter’s execution of a carefully developed serial killer body technique which makes this series so compelling. Through an examination of Dexter and his plotted body moves, this paper explores the representations of intimacy and murderous identity in this contemporary example of domestic screen horror entertainment. Keywords: Dexter, body-technique, desire, crime television, horror 1 [email protected] Launched in 2006, the television drama series Dexter has been a ratings record- breaker for its network producers (Showtime, CBS 2007-2011).

  • The Birth Pangs of Creation: the Eschatological Transformation of Nature in Romans 8:19-22
The Birth Pangs of Creation: The Eschatological Transformation of Nature in Romans 8:19-22 by Dr. Harry Alan Hahne Professor of New Testament, Gateway Seminary Presented at the Evangelical Theological Society Annual Meeting, November 15, 2017 Romans 8:19-22 discusses the present suffering of the natural world due to the human Fall. Although the natural world is not itself fallen or disobedient to God, Adam’s sin brought the created order into bondage to death, decay, corruption and futility. Yet Paul describes this suffering in the context of great eschatological hope both for believers and the natural world: The suffering of creation is like birth pangs leading to a glorious new world, rather than the death pangs of a dying creation.1 The redemption that Christ brings will have cosmic consequences: At the second coming of Christ the natural order will be restored to its proper operation, so that it may fulfill the purpose for which it was created. This passage focuses on two major themes: (1) the present corruption of the subhuman creation as a result of the Fall of Adam, which results in a futile cycle of decay and death; and (2) the eschatological redemption of creation which will deliver it from corruption and transform it into a state of freedom and glory. Paul uses the two-sided metaphor of birth pangs to embrace both of these themes: As a metaphor of intense suffering it symbolizes the present suffering of creation. As a metaphor of productive pain that brings a positive outcome, it points to the eschatological hope of the redemption of creation.

  • Masculinity in Emo Music a Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Social Science in Candi
CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity. Keywords: emo, synergistic masculinity, performativity, music video, masculinities, lyrics, vocal production, musical syntax, dynamics. ABSTRAIT Emo est un genre musical qui implique typiquement des musiciens de sexe masculine et qui est issu de movement punk et hardcore originaire de Washington DC durant les années 80.
