Menlo College Campus News ' Article 10 Spring 2014 Menlo College Campus News The Oaks Press ‘ March 24th to March 30th 2014 Give It Your All! Aloha‘ Menlo College, I found this quote and instantly thought about my thesis class. I'll be one of the first to admit that I am Inspirational struggling in the course and complain left and right Quote about what we have to do. Nevertheless, I always end up thinking about how much this class will benefit me not "I hated every minute of only for furthering my education, but life in general. training, but I said, 'Don't Thesis class really pushes me to work my fullest quit. Suffer now and live potential and although I hate it now, I know I will the rest of your life as a benefit from it. champion.'" I urge all of you to refer to Muhammad Ali’s advice, -Muhammad Ali which states, "Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion" when you feel like giving up. Realize that the hard work you put in will pay off and make your life that much greater! I’ve seen this firsthand when students work really hard their first three years of school so that they can "cruise" through and have that "easy" senior year. Put in the hard work now, and with all of the blood, sweat, and tears, will come something great... Life as a champion! Have a great week Menlo and don't forget about the The Student Union 23rd Annual Lu'au on April 5th :)! recently got 3 New Pool Tables!!! Stop by and -Mikey Kukahiwa-Haruno check them out! The VITA program provides an opportunity for low/middle income taxpayers (generally those with incomes less than $52,000) to have their taxes prepared for free by well- trained and certified preparers. All of our student volunteers have undergone 24 hours of training and had to pass a series of rigorous exams in order to be able to volunteer. Last year’s inaugural program was quite a success as we prepared returns for 60 clients who received over $27,000 in refunds. For this year, we have doubled the amount of volunteers from 11 to 22 and, therefore, are doubling our hours of operation. There are plenty of opportunities for Menlo students and other qualifying taxpayers to come have their taxes prepared and (hopefully) get their refund. A reminder to all students who took Personal Finance at Menlo…if you receive a W-2 for a job you had in 2013 you may very well be entitled to a refund for some or all of the taxes you had withheld from your wages. Don’t just assume you do not need to file because you didn’t make that much. If too much tax was withheld, you should get that back as a refund. You need to file to do that. The dates we will offer the services are as follows: Tuesday, Mar 25 6-9 pm Brawner 405 Thursday, Apr 3 6-9 pm Brawner 401/402 Saturday, Apr 12 10am – 2pm Brawner 405 Please don’t wait until the last few sessions to have your taxes prepared as those tend to be very busy sessions! Also, arrive early so you can be the first to be served with no wait. Also….please pass this onto anyone you know who may qualify for this service (friends, siblings, etc.). We would like to help as many taxpayers as possible! We hope to see you this year at our site! If you come, please make sure to bring your social security card, a photo ID and all necessary paperwork (W-2s, 1098-T, etc.) Professor Jack Klingler 7 8 9 Campus Events Monday, March 24, 2014 7:00 pm (Fireside Lounge): Speaker Series: Dr. Kurt Cline, California State University, Fresno Dr. Kurt Cline is Associate Professor of Political Science at Fresno State, and Director of the CSUF Master of Public Administration (MPA) program. LU’AU 2014 APRIL 5, 2014 “ALOHA AKU, ALOHA MAI” 13 A Message from the Peer Counselors When I think of bullying my first thoughts are of young elementary school children excluding each other from games, or middle and high school students spreading rumors about one another. The word bullying does not make me think of College students and perhaps this logic is part of the problem. The reality is that while bullying begins in grade school it does not end there, it continues into college and even in the work force. Both bullying and harassment play a significant role on college campuses and have the potential to have severe negative consequences if students and administrators do not take the initiative to eliminate instances of bullying and harassment. Stopbullying.gov defines bullying as, “Unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully may have serious, lasting problems.” Even this definition of bullying incorrectly assumes that bullying only occurs amongst school age children. However, this definition still applies to college students. In fact, according to a 2012 study published Health Day News 15% college students reported being bullied and 22% reported being cyber-bullied. In this same study 42 % of students reported seeing someone being bullied by another student. However, bullying is not the only concern on college campuses.

Article 6 Fall 2013 The Oaks Press ‘ Menlo College Campus News ‘ September 23rd to September 29th 2013 Don’t Let Up! Aloha Menlo College, We all go through struggles and since we are all human, we all make mistakes. But take each of these hardships as learning experiences. Take each of them as a reason for you to improve and motivation to move forward. Inspirational I was watching this video on YouTube about a runner who Quote was favored to win a race. During the race, he pulled his hamstring. Determined to finish the race, he got up and “When you don’t hobbled to the finish line. While hobbling, a man from give up. You the stands ran and put the runner’s hand on his shoulder. can’t fail” It was his father. For about half the length of the track, the runner and his father, with his hand to his father’s shoulder walked and finished the race. Although the runner wanted to win, there was nothing he could do to change the outcome with the given circumstances. But what he did do was NOT GIVE UP. When you don’t give up on yourself, you can never fail because there will always be someone you make proud by simply not giving up. In this case, it was the runner’s father. For this issue, I would like to send a special shout out to my three wonderful siblings who are my #1 fans and are supportive through ALL my struggles and successes. You guys are my shoulder to lean on and my motivation to NEVER GIVE UP.
