BY BARBI LAZARUS, DONOR & VOLUNTEER RESOURCES COORDINATOR

At age 65, Samuel L. Jackson proves it’s never too late to go vegan. If you know someone senior looking to make more vegetarian food choices, but thinking it’s too diffi cult at such an age, tell him or her about Jackson, and gift a copy of Ginny’s book.

Samuel L. Jackson probably doesn’t need much of an introduction. Surely you’ve heard of the highly prolifi c actor who has starred in more than 100 fi lms including Jurassic Park and Pulp Fiction, but did you know earlier this year he announced he’s gone vegan?

Samuel has said he was inspired to go vegan by Dr. , a vegan cardiologist. He read Dr. Esselstyn’s books on preventing and reversing heart disease, watched the documentary which interviews him extensively, and even met him and his wife at his home.

He wanted to experience the health benefi ts he learned of and in fact credits his adoption of a vegan diet to losing 40 pounds.

Having gone vegan at age 65, Samuel L. Jackson proves that it is never too late to go vegan. So, if you have a friend or family member that’s been pondering making the switch but is worried it would be too diffi cult at a senior age, give them a copy of Never Too Late to Go Vegan available in the Toronto Vegetarian Association Resource Centre.

ABOUT THE BOOK If you’re 50 or over and thinking (or already committed to!) a vegan diet and lifestyle that will benefi t your health, animals, and the planet, look no further than this essential all-in-one resource. Authors Carol J. Adams, Patti Breitman, and Virginia Messina bring 75 years of vegan experience to this book.

Chloe’s Vegan Italian Kitchen

On a warm August afternoon we got a surprise delivery at the TVA offi ce: a draft copy of ’s latest book, Chloe’s Vegan Italian Kitchen. While the draft was in black and white, and was missing page numbers and an index, it was still too exciting of a surprise to ignore. So I got right on to testing out recipes to review for TVA members as we anticipate the release of the book (of course by the time you receive this issue of Lifelines, the book will have been on the shelves for a couple of months and maybe you’ll be lucky enough to have one in your hands!).

An entire book on Italian vegan cuisine is long overdue. After all, for many people, it’s cheesy Italian favourites like pizza and cream sauces that keep them eating dairy after they’ve ditched all other animal products. Chloe’s book means that now people who say “I’m 90% vegan but I just can’t give up cheese!” can fi nally ditch the dairy, because she provides recipes for plenty of ooey gooey cheesy classics without the cruelty.

However, the fi rst recipe I tried wasn’t actually a pizza or pasta, but an awesome new addition to my lunch repertoire: Parmesan pita crisps with a lemon chickpea spread. It was a refreshing change from a typical pita and hummus, with a similar nutritional profi le (chickpeas blended with lots of lemon juice = great source of absorbable iron!). Both recipes took no more than 5 minutes to throw together and used very basic, simple ingredients that I already had on hand in my kitchen. (Ok, maybe not everyone keeps on stock at all times, but most of us do right?).

Next up were breaded and baked onion rings dipped in homemade arrabiata sauce. It had the perfect amount of spice, which of course you can modify to your liking.

But of course, I had to try a pasta dish eventually, and started with the Bowties in Mushroom Cream Sauce. Chloe uses soaked cashews to create a creamy sauce, which brought back memories of my favourite childhood , spaghetti and Love Cookbooks? mushroom sauce (you know, made with Campbell’s mushroom soup?). Learn about our huge collection Chloe’s Vegan Italian Kitchen contains a blend of simple, easy and accessible of books for sale and library loan recipes she’s known for in her fi rst two books, as well as some more time- @ veg.ca/visit-the-tva-resource- consuming recipes for those that really love to cook, like homemade meatballs or center recipes for your own pizza dough. And of course, no book from Chloe would be complete without a lengthy dessert section. Bon appetite!

We want the one thing that will transform us into our healthiest selves. When I coach clients, I emphasize that with health there is no silver bullet. Save one.

There is one thing all of us could do that would greatly improve our health: chew.

When we chew, saliva is released from three pairs of glands in our mouths. At its most basic function, saliva moistens and binds food together while it dissolves food chemicals so they can be tasted. Hi Calla,

Thanks for writing to us and asking a great question - we are sure many other new vegetarians/vegans have the same concern.

First and foremost, please remember that you’re not trying to “convert” anyone into being vegetarian/vegan or adopt your lifestyle. It’s a very common response when you tell people about your new eating habits that some of them will get defensive and ask some tough questions.

The best approach is to let them have their say. Let them strongly disagree with it. Then quietly and politely say, “I understand where you’re coming from, and you’re entitled to your point They don’t have to agree with it for you to benefi t of view.
