FOREWORD To my daughters Anne Russell Sampson, now since June 11, 1912, Mrs. Richard V. Taylor, Jr., and Merle D'Aubigne Sampson, now since September 25, 1917, ~frs. Oliver Wolcott Toll, and to all others who care to "listen in." When you were little children and got the stories you begged for, you would say, "O Mother, write it down"; and as you grew older you were more and more insistent. And you would ask, "What kin are they?" as I myself had done, about certain cousins dear to us, but not closely related: those within such Virginia degrees as to "call cousin," which meant of the same blood! My mother, even my father, Rev. Edgar Woods, a natural genealogist, would answer, "I do not know exactly where they come in." Yet the · clan was strong in their blood, and so it ~ame to me. About 18go I began to coll~ct definite information about ancestors and collaterals. My father did much of this, and cared much for Kith and Kin. Now the first meaning the dic­ tionary gives of Kith is "Knowledge": the secondary meaning "one'-s own people," those we know, or are supposed to know, all about. So for the purpose of this ·writing, Kith and Kin seems an appropriate name. People t:nay be kin to you, of your blood and race, yet not Kith or k-nown, until you know what kin they are. All the people in the following pages are kin to you-my children-and when you have read, they will be both kith and kin. Your father's father, Rev. Dr. Francis Sampson, died when your father was only four years old : he was separated from his mother when he was ten: he knew about no one beyond "Grandfather Dick," not even his great-grandfather's name, which seemed to me like a breach of the Fifth Command. So I needs must search out his kindred for you. ~aving heard my father and others lament that much had been lost which might have been obtained from those older who had passed away unquestioned or unheeded, I first of all wrote to 6 KITH AND KIN every old person on all sides of both families. 1fost appreciative letters came back, full of interesting items. Also the clerks of all the counties where your forbears had lived, responded most kindly. Where people have owned' land, the generations can be followed. But in Virginia by the fortunes of three wars, many records had been destroyed. In King-and-Queen County, for instance, the Court House was burned in the Revolutionary \Var, again in 1812, again in the Civil War. In this case and others, I was able partially to recoup this loss from Parish Books. To you, my children, I am glad to say thc:1t you come of good people. They were gentle£olk; and better, godly folk Almost every drop of your blood came to America for conscience' sake, fleeing from persecution in one form or other. Scotch, Ulster- Scotch, Puritan, Huguenot, "they loved their God more than goods or native land." As to their station, in almost every case they were leaders in those early days. In Virginia, as a rule, civic honours were denied them. As most of them were Presbyterians, there£ ore Nonconformists to the Church of England, they could not be members of Council or of the House of Burgesses. But until the Test Act shut them out, they held offices : Clerk of Court, "High Sheriff" and "Gentlemen Justices of the King's Peace." In Colonial Virginia as in England, the sheriff was a personage, the chief officer of the Crown, "Letters Patent committing to him the custody of the County as Keeper of the King's Peace." -..The High Sheriff had "honorable" deputies, beside all the justices as administrators of his decrees. The word Sheriff is Saxon, "shire-reeve," reeve meaning "judge, prefect or fiscal officer." I can remember older people speaking with pride of one or an­ other who "rode sheriff." Rank as officers came more easily. Governor Gooch approved of these sturdy Presbyterians as a "frontier ,vall against the savages": a good opinion which George \V ashington also held. A word as to "proving importation." A great number of people were sent to Virginia, the Barbadoes and other Colonies, as to­ Australia in the last century, in punishment for legal off <:.nces : hence New England's sometime sneer about "convict aristocracy." But many of those "convicts" were the very best people both as to birth and character and they were exiled for no crime, but for KITH AND KIN political or politico-ecclesiastical reasons. There is in all great public libraries a "List of Persons of Quality"-being simply copies of receipts given by ship captains 'Yho bought the best blood of the \Vest of England after Monmouth's Rebellion and Jeffrey's Assizes. Moreover many, impoverished by fines or per­ secution, in order to reach the land of promise and freedom, sold then1selves for a term of service. They were known as "in­ dentured servants" and wer_e often cultured persons, such as the one in "Prisoners of Hope." Many of the early teachers were such. After the stipulated five, ten, twenty years of service, they ,vere free. T}:tere should have been no obloquy: but they could not patent land, though they could buy of any who would sell. Those ,vho would patent, must state that they "came at their own charges." Not one of your fathers were "indentured servants" or exiles by law. All are found in the records in such case as the follow­ ing: "Alexander Brackenridge ( they changed the spelling later) came into court May 22, 1740, and made oath that he had im­ ported himself, his wife and seven children (named) from Ire­ land (Ulster) to Philadelphia and thence to this Colony at his own charges, and now appears to partake of His Majesty's bounty for taking up lands and this is the first time of proving his and their rights in order to obtain lands, which is ordered to be certi­ fied."~- This Alexander who was your five-greats-grandfather, also purchased 245 acres from Beverley, March 24, 1741. Robert Poage and his ,vife, your four-greats-grandparents, qualified the same May day, 1740. The Colony was anxious to attract good settlers. Governor Gooch, October 3, 1734, promised Benj. Borden 100,000 acres "on James River west of the Blue Ridge" as soon as he would locate a hundred settlers on the tract. This Benj. Borden had just received a very large grant-a very different thing from a patent-in Frederick County, afterwards called "Borden's Manor." Richard \i\Toods, the oldest son of Michael Woods, and his son Samuel, ,vere among the first settlers of this Manor.

The poorer areas of the midlands and west have been largely passed over as less well-documented and thus less interesting. It incorporates comparable data from the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I, and the Elizabeth I. Much of the analysis is quantitative in nature: chapters compare the appointments of justices of the peace during the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, and reveal that purges of the commissions of the peace were far more common than is generally believed. Furthermore, purges appear to have been religiously- based, especially during the reign of Elizabeth I. There is a gap in the quantitative data beginning in 1569, only eleven years into Elizabeth I’s reign, which continues until 1584. In an effort to compensate for the loss of quantitative data, this dissertation analyzes a different primary source, William Lambarde’s guidebook for JPs, Eirenarcha. The fourth chapter makes particular use of Eirenarcha, exploring required duties both in and out of session, what technical and personal qualities were expected of JPs, and how well they lived up to them.

Secretary Hicks-Thomas then led a discussion regarding an e-mail sent to the Executive Board from Commission Member Mary Abelsmith. Regarding the concerns of the e-mail, the Executive Board resolved that they had already received a concrete timeline on the project as submitted by the artist, that the current funds raised are being held by the Capitol Foundation and that Alice Lynch will talk more about current fundraising efforts at the next meeting of the Full Commission. Members of the Executive Board then held a brief discussion about potential names for the Monument that had not previously been submitted. Susan Schaar brought up the potential to have a female athlete as a figure on the Monument. Ms. Schaar also discussed the major role women have played in the conservation of Virginia and suggested the name Elisabeth Scott Bocock. Em Bowles Alsop also suggested the Gibson girl and Mary Wells Ashworth. Alice Lynch questioned if Lottie Moon should be reconsidered. A suggestion from the audience of Pat Perkinson, the first female Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia, was made. An audience member also suggested Henrietta Lacks. The Board then discussed the information provided to them by Dr. Treadway on the list of names they had previously chosen.

Attached to a variety of ostensibly distinct practices, from choirs singing alternatim to congregations praying responsively, it was used to advance a variety of partisan agendas regarding performance and sound within the services of the English Church. This dissertation examines discourses of public worship that were conducted around and through “singing by course,” treating it as a linguistic and conceptual node within broader networks of contemporary religious debate. I thus attend less to the history of the vocal practices to which “by course” and similar descriptions were applied than to the polemical dynamics of these applications. Discussions of these terms and practices slipped both horizontally, to other matters of ritual practice, and vertically, to larger topics or frameworks such as the nature of the Christian Church, the production of piety, and the roles of sound and performance in corporate prayer. Through consideration of these issues, “singing by course” emerges as a rhetorical, political, and theological construction, one that circulated according to changing historical conditions and to the interests of various ecclesiastical constituencies.

    The College and Canons of St Stephen’s, Westminster, 1348 - 1548 Volume I of II Elizabeth Biggs PhD University of York History October 2016 Abstract This thesis is concerned with the college founded by Edward III in his principal palace of Westminster in 1348 and dissolved by Edward VI in 1548 in order to examine issues of royal patronage, the relationships of the Church to the Crown, and institutional networks across the later Middle Ages. As no internal archive survives from St Stephen’s College, this thesis depends on comparison with and reconstruction from royal records and the archives of other institutions, including those of its sister college, St George’s, Windsor. In so doing, it has two main aims: to place St Stephen’s College back into its place at the heart of Westminster’s political, religious and administrative life; and to develop a method for institutional history that is concerned more with connections than solely with the internal workings of a single institution. As there has been no full scholarly study of St Stephen’s College, this thesis provides a complete institutional history of the college from foundation to dissolution before turning to thematic consideration of its place in royal administration, music and worship, and the manor of Westminster. The circumstances and processes surrounding its foundation are compared with other such colleges to understand the multiple agencies that formed St Stephen’s, including that of the canons themselves. Kings and their relatives used St Stephen’s for their private worship and as a site of visible royal piety.

    Jnl of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 55, No. 4, October 2004. f 2004 Cambridge University Press 654 DOI: 10.1017/S0022046904001502 Printed in the United Kingdom Episcopal Tombs in Early Modern England by PETER SHERLOCK The Reformation simultaneously transformed the identity and role of bishops in the Church of England, and the function of monuments to the dead. This article considers the extent to which tombs of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century bishops represented a set of episcopal ideals distinct from those conveyed by the monuments of earlier bishops on the one hand and contemporary laity and clergy on the other. It argues that in death bishops were increasingly undifferentiated from other groups such as the gentry in the dress, posture, location and inscriptions of their monuments. As a result of the inherent tension between tradition and reform which surrounded both bishops and tombs, episcopal monuments were unsuccessful as a means of enhancing the status or preserving the memory and teachings of their subjects in the wake of the Reformation. etween 1400 and 1700, some 466 bishops held office in England and Wales, for anything from a few months to several decades.1 The B majority died peacefully in their beds, some fading into relative obscurity. Others, such as Richard Scrope, Thomas Cranmer and William Laud, were executed for treason or burned for heresy in one reign yet became revered as saints, heroes or martyrs in another.     December 4, 2007 Vol. 3 No. 4 thecupola news FOR MARY BALDWIN COLLEGE FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS Mary Baldwin Embraces the Real Faces of Hunger and Homelessness Mary Baldwin College freshman Stephanie Klusmann (at right) was 12 years old the first time a park in her neighborhood in Virginia Beach served as her bedroom. She became a statistic, one of the 1.6 million American children under age 18 who are on the streets on any given night. Klusmann’s experience made her a natural as one of several organizers of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week at MBC November 12–16, an adaptation of the national awareness week. Annual events at MBC, such as a Hunger Banquet and canned food drive, and new ones, such as a sleep-out on the lawn of the President’s House, combined for a line-up to open eyes and minds. We asked Klusmann to write her reflections at the end of each day; her insights are captured here. Editor’s note: An article in Staunton’s The News Leader that Klusmann references here was picked up on the Associated Press wire and ran in papers around the state. As a result, Klusmann’s story and Mary Baldwin College’s involvement has touched many, including Thomas Jefferson Area Homeless Coalition and the office of the mayor of Norfolk, who both hope to work with Klusmann in the future. ABSTRACT The entire complement of wills from the deanery of Leek probated between 1532 and 1580, about 1,300, have been examined to assess response of the testators to religious change through the first fifty years of the Reformation, by detailing the impact on their religious sentiments and bequests. While change in this backward agricultural community was late and driven from above, unexpectedly, once initiated, it took hold rapidly. It is suggested that this was due to the actions of the Protestant Bishop Thomas Bentham, anxious to mitigate fears voiced by critics of his weak implementation of government edicts in his diocese. He advanced change through monitoring and resolute control of his clergy. A transition from traditional religious sentiments is observed in the will-writing output of individual clergy: as priests appointed during earlier, Catholic regimes died or resigned, and they were replaced by men supporting the Elizabethan Settlement.
