As nationalism and nativism rise across the globe, my cyber world is under siege. I am not complaining. Powerful images posted online from art biennials have stayed with me: Venice, Berlin, Dak’Art (Dakar, Senegal) and Art X in Lagos, Nigeria. Memorable, startling art, love- infused, aiming to transform the way I, we, see all kinds of difference: gender, race, culture and ability. Rarely can art claim immediate transformative power; what it can do is capture the imagination and plant seeds for a conversation and perhaps – ultimately – a conversion. Latest In this essay, I turn my thoughts away from arresting visual art to focus on a landmark Trump says Congress 'can't union: Margaret Busby OBE with Candida Lacey of Myriad Editions (UK) and 200+ 2 mins ago women from Africa and its diasporas. It is a great literary assembly put together for the purpose of reconstructing perceptions about Africa and her women, celebrating African Why Buhari administratio women in literature and showcasing the dazzling range of their work. Importantly, the delayed - Dogara women have assembled for the purpose of making a difference in black women’s lives 23 mins ago through the inauguration of the Margaret Busby New Daughters of Africa (NDOA) Award. -

It examines women‘s fiction on the impact of the land reform and Operation Murambatsvina with regard to the displacements and the consequent pain and trauma these programmes brought about. I examine stories by both black and white Zimbabwean female writers and argue that these stories show that the programmes caused physical, emotional, social and economic displacement. -

64 When it no longer matters whom you love: the politics of love and identity in Nigerian migrant fiction Ajibola Opeyemi 1 Department of English University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3094-1285, Email: [email protected] Tel: +2348062420265 Abstract A number of creative texts by Nigerian migrant writers recreate migrant characters’ experiences of love, intimacy and connected identity politics in the diaspora. However, there is a paucity of scholarly engagements with Nigerian migrant writers’ representation of the complexities that attend the formation and reconfiguration of migrant characters’ identity and love relationships outside the motherland. This study, therefore, examines the intersection of love, place and identity in three purposively selected texts – Segun Afolabi’s Goodbye Lucill e, Chimamanda Adichie’s Americanah and Unoma Azuah’s Edible Bones. The three novels are closely read and analysed using the Postcolonial theory’s conceptions of Othering and unhomeliness, in order to foreground the impact of the ‘condition of the diaspora’ on migrant characters’ relationships and identity negotiations. The study reveals that all three novels feature characters that struggle to align their multiple identities and at the same time maintain meaningful love relationships outside the motherland. There is also the representation of same-sex marriages, green marriages, dysfunctional inter-national, inter-racial and transnational relationships, and the negative effects of distance on love relationships. Time and chance then determine the politics of love and identity in diasporic spaces. Nigerian migrant writers represent the pervasively unpleasant experiences of migrant characters belied in the construction of love with identity politics as coordinate relationships in the Nigerian diaspora, through a rhetoric pain and suffering, in order to underscore the unpleasant second side that there is to the migration narrative of bliss and fulfilment. -

Date: 10th October 2014 Copyright © 2015 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved i Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za ABSTRACT This thesis undertakes a comparative reading of post-colonial literature written in English in Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe to bring into focus the similarities and differences between fictional representations of poverty in these three countries. The thesis explores the unique way in which literature may contribute to the better understanding of poverty, a field that has hitherto been largely dominated by scholarship that relies on quantitative analysis as opposed to qualitative approaches. The thesis seeks to use examples from selected texts to illustrate that (as many social scientists have argued before) literature provides insights into the ‘lived realities’ of the poor and that with its vividly imagined specificities it illuminates the broad generalisations about poverty established in other (data-gathering) disciplines. Selected texts from the three countries destabilise the usual categories of gender, race and class which are often utilised in quantitative studies of poverty and by so doing show that experiences of poverty cut across and intersect all of these spheres and the experiences differ from one person to another regardless of which category they may fall within. -

BORDERS REVIEW OF THE 2019 PEN ANTHOLOGY SILVER LINING In 2003, the Nigerian chapter of PEN International published Melody of Stones, its first anthology of Nigerian writing. Silver Lining, is PEN Nigeria’s second anthology. Published by University Press Plc in the second half of 2019, Pen Nigeria President, Folu Agoi and Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, the editors, spoke in their Editorial about the need to REVIEW OF SILVER LINING (Borders copyright ©2019 - Olatoun Gabi-Williams) Page 1 put together a ‘robust’ work of Nigerian literature; one which will project, as ‘one vibrant voice’, an intergenerational caucus of artists and thinkers: early career, mid- career and veterans. No legislated themes or approaches: writers were asked to make their own choices about what to express and how. Before I begin my review of Silver Lining, I would like to take a quick look at examples of the world-wide campaign to mainstream African literature. It continues to gain ground. France-based Nakiri – Rights Solution and digital distributor, Italy- based StreetLib , two stakeholders in the success of African publishing, have come together to scale the sale of foreign rights and distribution of francophone books across international and linguistic boundaries, leveraging expertise in rights trading and cutting-edge digital technology. Individual linguists across Africa and community resources such as the Red Sea Cultural Centre, Hargeysa, Somaliland, are translating books and short stories into local languages to encourage consumption of African literature by the widest possible local audience. The Mabati Cornell Kiswahili Prize for African literature was inaugurated for the purpose of translating texts from, between and into African languages and to promote writing in African languages. -

E-mail: [email protected] Remembering the short stories of Yvonne Vera: A postcolonial and feminist reading The Zimbabwean author Yvonne Vera is one of the most important writers to emerge from the African continent over the last two decades. Although she has received widespread critical acclaim as well as academic scrutiny, analyses of her work have mostly focused on her novels. This article attempts to redress this scholarly imbalance by offering a close textual analysis of Why Don’t You Carve Other Animals? through a critical lens of postcolonial and feminist theory. In these stories Vera articulates the internal thoughts of her characters in order to explore the way that oppressed people negotiate the fact of their oppression. It is particularly the female characters’ reflections that reveal the complexity of the position occupied by colonised women and the sophistication of their attempts to address the layered marginalisation to which they are subjected. Vera shows that, for them, an unproblematic participation in the nationalist movement for liberating Zimbabwe from colonial oppression is simply not an option. The article explores the specifically gendered expectations and obstacles that shape the female characters’ struggles in the Zimbabwean context. Introduction The inaugural International Publishers Association (IPA) Africa Seminar, entitled ‘Publishing for Sustainable Development – The Role of Publishers in Africa’ – was jointly organised by the IPA and the Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA), and held at the sumptuous Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, Nigeria on 9 May, 2018. Guest registration desk. Guests networking at the welcome reception. Like the Oscars… Some 180-odd delegates and guests knew they were at a special event as soon as they saw the entrance lobby to the conference room. This was decked-out, Oscars style, with ‘wrapped walls’ featuring the name of the event and the logos of the main organisers, the IPA and NPA. This made the perfect backdrop for pictures and was stylishly executed. It also added a touch of glamour, an effect accentuated by the presence of conference ‘stewardesses’ in sparkling dresses. Guests at the welcome reception. Speakers at the welcome reception, left to right : Elliot Agyare, Sellami Ahmed El Meki, Mohammad Radi. A professional room Badges and Seminar programmes were duly collected and delegates were able to mingle over refreshments before making their way into the spacious conference room where the stage and lighting were also very professional. The presence of a drumkit and African drums to the side of the stage was a hint of further excitements to come. Guest registration desk. The President of the Nigerian Publishers Association Gbadega Adedapo gave the first opening address in which he said that African publishing had a good story to tell, but that it hadn’t “shouted about it loudly enough”. -

POPULAR EXPRESSIONS OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN NATIONALISM(S): CONVERGENCES, DIVERGENCES, AND RECONCILIATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA AND ZIMBABWE By Blessing Shingirirai Mavima A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of African American and African Studies – Doctor of Philosophy 2019 ABSTRACT POPULAR EXPRESSIONS OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN NATIONALISM(S): CONVERGENCES, DIVERGENCES, AND RECONCILIATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA AND ZIMBABWE By Blessing Shingirirai Mavima Popular Expressions of Pan-Africanism and Southern African Nationalism(s): Convergences, Divergences, and Reconciliations in South Africa and Zimbabwe is a dissertation study that traces the transformations, reveals the tensions, and critically analyzes diverging and converging trajectories of different manifestations of African nationalism, including ethnic nationalism, state nationalism, and Pan-Africanism using contemporary South Africa and Zimbabwe as sites of analyses. Focusing on the metropolitan provinces of Gauteng and Harare respectively, I use the study to interrogate how popular expressions of African nationalism have emerged and evolved in the neighboring nations during their anti-colonial/anti-apartheid struggles throughout the 20 th century, and how they exist today. Presenting a thesis that I call nationalisms from below, the research study reveals how these manifestations of nationalism are imagined, practiced, and represente d by the initiatives and actions of different members of the civil society including artists, activists, laborers, and migrants in the two countries’ contemporary politics and society. My findings lead to a nuanced determination of the factors that influence the intersections, divergences, and convergences of what I refer to in the study as Africa’s tripartite nationalist expressions and identities—ethnicism, African Nationalism, and Pan- Africanism.
