My work is centred in this field of study and it aims at conducting a comparative analysis of the narratives produced by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe and Angolan author Ruy Duarte de Carvalho, observing the convergent and divergent aspects in aesthetics and ideology present in their works. The corpus under analysis includes Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Vou lá Visitar Pastores by Ruy Duarte de Carvalho. The authors converge ideologically in their works as they pay attention to issues such as land ownership and usage, peoples’ heritage and history. Besides the historical and cultural diversity, these texts also allow the discussion of other issues, notably particularities in aesthetic elaboration. Both novelists combine literary and anthropological topics. Thus, this thesis is a correlational, descriptive and analytical type of research, and is seeking cultural meaning and understanding through fiction. The main sources for my thesis were the two texts mentioned above, but also documents available on African literature, history, literary criticism, ethnography, politics and anthropology. As it has for so many other scholars, Professor Zink’s work has taught me how to read literature and scientific methodology and his scholarship represents a standard of excellence worth aspiring to.     The Way Ahead the future of creative writing in education with special guests: Michael Morpurgo and Kate Atkinson a NAWE conference at The Hawkhills, York 16-18 November 2007 The Way Ahead: Introduction by Paul Munden This conference celebrates NAWE’s 20th year, and there are indeed real reasons to celebrate, over and above the date. When NAWE was first formed (by members represented on this latest conference programme) it had the aim of ‘widening the scope of writing in education, promoting the development of new ideas, offering practical help to less experienced writers and opening up a creative dialogue between writers, teachers and funding bodies.’ All those things have underwritten our every effort ever since, and with fruitful results. Current initiatives, such as our HE Network and our Writers in Schools Research Programme, funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, are applying those founding principles in fresh, determined ways. Education is always the subject of fierce debate. Try to imagine a time when we are all perfectly satisfied with the curriculum and how it is delivered! (It’s actually a rather sinister thought.) As the curriculum is once again undergoing major changes, it is especially appropriate that we are meeting to consider the way ahead for writers and their engagement with education at all levels. As the word ‘creativity’ has been liberally applied to new programmes of study, it is up to writers and other artists to help ensure that teachers are well supported in translating the new notions into meaningful practice. Sometimes this means working directly with official bodies.

However, there is a paucity of scholarly engagements with Nigerian migrant writers’ representation of the complexities that attend the formation and reconfiguration of migrant characters’ identity and love relationships outside the motherland. This study, therefore, examines the intersection of love, place and identity in three purposively selected texts – Segun Afolabi’s Goodbye Lucill e, Chimamanda Adichie’s Americanah and Unoma Azuah’s Edible Bones. The three novels are closely read and analysed using the Postcolonial theory’s conceptions of Othering and unhomeliness, in order to foreground the impact of the ‘condition of the diaspora’ on migrant characters’ relationships and identity negotiations. The study reveals that all three novels feature characters that struggle to align their multiple identities and at the same time maintain meaningful love relationships outside the motherland. There is also the representation of same-sex marriages, green marriages, dysfunctional inter-national, inter-racial and transnational relationships, and the negative effects of distance on love relationships. Time and chance then determine the politics of love and identity in diasporic spaces. Nigerian migrant writers represent the pervasively unpleasant experiences of migrant characters belied in the construction of love with identity politics as coordinate relationships in the Nigerian diaspora, through a rhetoric pain and suffering, in order to underscore the unpleasant second side that there is to the migration narrative of bliss and fulfilment.

Summary of the impact Creative Writing research projects funded by the British Council have created a transformative educational environment for African writers, developing life-changing training programmes. Designed and delivered by the Department of English and Creative Writing at Lancaster University, and led by Dr (now Professor) Graham Mort, these projects pioneered eMentoring and new online teaching pedagogies, engaging directly with over 300 African writers across 9 African countries, whilst creating outreach activity through a literary festival that engaged writers from 18 African countries and the UK. Three phases of cumulative practice-led research have helped to nurture a new generation of African writers with each project leading into the next: 1. Crossing Borders (2001-06) – connecting writers across 9 African nations, involving 300 writers linked to 36 UK mentors; 2. Radiophonics (2007-09) – creating exploratory forms of public debate and fiction through radio in Africa and reaching over 5 million listeners; 3. FEMRITE (2011-) developing and stimulating female writing in Uganda through training programmes. 2. Underpinning research The underpinning research for these projects began in Uganda in 2001. Mort’s six-week British Council writing residency at Makerere University (Kampala) in 2001 involved direct contact with Ugandan writers and led to his report identifying a sense of isolation amongst writers, a lack of training opportunities, limited awareness of contemporary literatures in English and few literary resources or opportunities for publication.

    English Language and Literature (ENGL) 1 English Language and Literature (ENGL) * ENGL 005b / AFAM 013b, Counterarchives: Black Historical Fictions Elleza Kelley While historical records have long been the source from which we draw our picture of the past, it is with literature and art that we attempt to speculatively work out that which falls between the cracks of conventional archival documentation, that which cannot be contained by historical record—emotion, gesture, the sensory, the sonic, the inner life, the aerlife, the neglected and erased. This course examines how contemporary black writers have imagined and attempted to represent black life from the late 17th to the early 20th centuries, asking what fiction can tell us about history. Reading these works as alternative archives, or “counterarchives,” which index the excess and fugitive material of black histories in the Americas, we probe the uses, limits, and revelations of historical fictions, from the experimental and realist novel, to works of poetry and drama. Drawing on the work of various interdisciplinary scholars, we use these historical fictions to explore and enter into urgent and ongoing conversations around black life & death, African-American history & memory, black aesthetics, and the problem of “The Archive.” Enrollment limited to first-year students.     320+ Halloween Songs and Albums Over 320 Songs for Halloween Theme Rides in Your Indoor Cycling Classes Compiled by Jennifer Sage, updated October 2014 Halloween presents a unique opportunity for some really fun musically themed classes—the variety is only limited by your imagination. Songs can include spooky, dark, or classic-but-cheesy Halloween tunes (such as Monster Mash). Or you can imagine the wide variety of costumes and use those themes. I’ve included a few common themes such as Sci-Fi and Spy Thriller in my list. Over the years I’ve gotten many of these song suggestions from various online forums, other instructors, and by simply searching online music sources for “Halloween”, “James Bond”, “Witch”, “Ghost” and other key words. This is my most comprehensive list to date. If you have more song ideas, please email them to me so I can continually update this list for future versions. [email protected]. This year’s playlist contains 50 new specific song suggestions and numerous new album suggestions. I’ve included a lot more from the “darkwave” and “gothic” genres. I’ve added “Sugar/Candy” as its own theme.
